Haha yah we were definitely over confident with the condition of the boat. We're experienced with boats that are ocean ready. Now we're learning that's not the case for every boat that "looks good". Now we're getting experienced on what really qualifies a boat to be ocean worthy...

Love this stuff. Reminds me of when I bought my boat, and it ended up great. Keep fighting the good fight. Tip, get a moveable 12v spotlight u can attach to the boat during night, then in places where a lot of perhaps drunk people are driving around, you can light up the whole mast from bottom up. Gotta be pretty drunk to accidentally hit the boat then.

Why am I not shocked that this appears to be a clothing optional boat? Stay safe and please continue to share the journey. Thanks.
@haydonditchburn2194 Жыл бұрын
In my many years of cruising sailing, I've very often found that clothing optional is widely used. Particularly with females amongst the crew. Something about being on a small boat out of sight of land which just triggers things, then when one does, they all want to.. 🤩 Saves on the washing I guess..
@SpearItAnimal Жыл бұрын
Haha you're right, we definitely had many ups and downs along the way and some MAJOR learning lessons. Both of us had the experience of sailing fairly well maintained boats, which made us naive to a boat that had been so poorly maintained. We didn't think it could be that bad, but boy were we wrong... And that's the message we're trying to share. Yes we had it under control, had safety equipment on board, a satellite phone which we could've use in case of emergency after we realized our VHF didn't work. Luckily it didn't come to that, but we were a little more prepared than we let on. Just never judge a book by its cover!

When you have too run someone up to the top of the mast, loop the halyard around the halyard wench to the genny sheet wench with the sheet block, more mechanical advantage, the one two make electric is the right Halyard wench, so there will be times when she has too hoist you.

Fantastic!! Right when I didn't think I would see another sailing channel that could add anything to the ones I'm already subscribed to. :D As the saying goes, cruising is just boat work in exotic places. There are no boats without projects, only difference is if it's someone else's headache to fix it. (read charter boat). :D Maybe you got a few more projects than you bargained for, but that makes great content for us! :D (and I already know you have fixed here up so now you probably have a very nice boat that you know down to the smallest detail, that's worth a lot!) Cheers from a frosty Sweden!

Sheet to Tiller! In An Emergency with a down Auto Pilot. And using the emergency tiller.. Wind Vain steering can be setup with the emergency Tiller, and a couple of bungee cables too the Lee ward side, as the elastic, and a sheet from the main boom through a block on the windward rail, then too a half hitch on the tiller. Lots of trial an error to get it right. Not a bad idea too setup a system when you do not need it couple of cam cleats and depending on your emergency tiller how many blocks to need too make it work, but have used it has a wind vain system for years on my Cape Dory 25 in the 70’s. You can technically make it work on a wheel helm but takes more work..

Fresh water Rinse layup and Emergency Bilge Pump. On Starlight 1989 Beneteau Oceanis 350 has a Volvo Penta engine M2003 28hp anyway I was the second owner, so after I purchased the boat I was doing the shakedown cruise and ran the engine for about an hour and the overheated alarm went off , could not find a problem, cutting too the chase lots of growth and calcification of the tubes in the heat exchanger. Had too take the entire unit clean it and put it back, never wanted to do that again figured was not the use rather the extended, layup with saltwater, also the corrosion factor of the elbow, had to replace that. So as a solution I cam up with this manifold I constructed with brass and bronze fittings and ball valves for each connection, from the thru hull , to the manifold, ball on the thru hull and on the manifold did the same at the on end valve to the sea strainer to the engine, next thru hull, pressure fresh water, and at the other end again valve to a run to the bilge. This allows me to turn on the fresh water, backwash the thru hull, then shutoff and run the engine for 2 minutes on fresh water before shutting down the engine for the night or an extended time. It also in the final configuration allows me to bring to bear as an emergency pump, on my main bilge the engine, if there is a major leak in the boat that bilge pumps cannot handle for whatever reason, (lightning strikes) etc. I often use the fresh water system when she is on the hard, and I need to run the engine, like changing oil, etc. I have 100 gallons of water on Starlight, you should see the looks I get in the yard with no hose, on the hard, yet engine running and water from the exhaust and prop shaft running out. In 20 years have not had any overheating issues or had to deal with the heat exchanger or the elbow, which is notorious on Volvos..
