This has got to be up there as one of the best podcasts you’ve done. Sam sounds very knowledgeable about classics and as a classic petrol head myself it’s great to hear her views . You need to have Sam on more often and cover classic cars more.

I remember a 928S featuring in an AC/DC video in 1979, and have always half fancied the idea of owning one ever since, mind you, I also remember fancying owning a Renault Fuego when they came out new! 😬

A lot of new drivers are now looking for older cars with a bit of character. Being based inside the M25 ULEZ compliance is also a factor My son initially wanted a 190E, early C Class or E46 as a first car, he then saw the JDM cars like KEI cars and the older Jimny and Pajero Mini. Then a 2007 Octavia 1.6FSi Auto fell in my lap for next to nothing. ULEZ compliant with working AC. He is currently saving for an Android Head Unit made of pure chinesium. It will last him years no doubt as he is no boyracer. I know a mk2 pre facelift Octavia is not really a modern classic in the way an older Golf or Polo would be. But it’s solid and has a bit of retro charm. And will be a good stop gap before he gets his Jimny or Pajero Mini
@Southerncarsuk
@Southerncarsuk Ай бұрын
Fantastic, I’ve seen a significant increase in sales to London, largely down to the ULEZ compliance of classics. Plus they’re likely carbon neutral now and it makes a lot more sense to keep existing cars on the road.

I do see the classic world shrinking and now the biggest challenge is finding people who want to work on these . Most bodyshops and workshops just don't want to know and also the guys who understood these are disappearing as people retire. By the turn of the decade there will a agenda to remove these older cars off the road forever A lot of classic car suppliers have gone bust or retired already

@Southerncarsuk
@Southerncarsuk Ай бұрын
There is still a legal responsibility to describe a car correctly when we sell through an auction. For example, if you bought a car at auction and it was described as ‘just had major service’ and you got it home and it clearly hadn’t, you would be able to request to reverse the deal or the car made good as described, you may not have recourse if bought through a private seller if you had the opportunity to inspect the car and file. That’s why it’s really important that when we sell cars through an auction they are described properley.
@dj4myparty

Presume that's why Derek at M has been to court a fair few times in the past and the descriptions are at best vague now Great business Sam hope it bucks the trends

I had so much fun in my first car - a 1.1L, 11 year old, 1980 ford Fiesta. I used to try to do a 10 mile run at midnight after work in 10 minutes. 2 miles were 30 mph city roads, and the rest were windy roads that used to be 60 mph back in the day but are now mainly limited to 40 or 50 mph. My latest purchase - A 3.0L straight 6 manual naturally aspirated 2006 BMW Z4 Coupe - is the best car I have ever owned and it has plenty of power for the driving I do. Genuinely don't see why you'd want more power unless on a track

Just as point James (for a change) if you don't want your cars going to other Garages or even worse main dealers, stop saying any national Garage warranty on your walkaround videos mate, just say return to base month or 3 mths warranty, just saying those few easy words will save you 1000s mate and loads of agro, every other Garage just can't wait to rubbish you, even when they don't know you. It's all down to they're to be trusted but the person selling it isn't, you know the score mate.
@roystonvehicles9129
@roystonvehicles9129 Ай бұрын
James, sorry mate but that van, Ital, jag aren't worth bothering with, you'll be at 2k van, 1500 quid Ital, there simply not worth blocking your showroom up, leave the bangers /semi classics alone and make your money on your normal cars, buy a proper mint thing when you've made your money, you've got a great showroom, blocked up with rubbish (except roadster) you can drive anywhere in them, saying like an engine swop is just fantasy, you've got work on normal cars absolutely coming out of your ears. I've done loads of classics mate, used to restore proper ones and they push you to your limit, stick with your core business. I bought a half tidy midget for a grand in the summer, actually on the road, I can't get 1500 quid for it, had a call today and it's can I drive it to Wales (200 miles) what's that panel gap, kin hell, 1500 quid (!) total waste of time. You want your mint prepped cars in your showroom, like before, keeping clean and dry for customers. Your business isn't a hobby mate for a guy at the weekend, your absolutely snowed under as it is, give the classics a miss mate. I do know what I'm talking about having restored e types, mg, s, jensen, p1800, tr, s and lost money on them all.

Oh My !!!! What a Pod. 20 years in the job never knew how classics are sold within UK and Fit For Purpose act. Now I know. The same. More madness In Aussie and US. anything over 10 ten years old is exempt from our act. So sold as seen car dealership. Also all bar 2 states the other 48 you can sell any used goods including vehicles ‘As Is’ as an option over a warranty sale. Even have a sale lingo of Mechanic Special for As Is.
