I think if you are eligible to be checked then you are eligible to reverse check. All the rules of a check apply. Not hits to the head, no jumping, no elbows, ect... im glad you pointed out Seider as an example of a player who hits hard without needing to jump into the hit.

Jumping should be ok in certain circumstances. Jumping can prevent you getting boarded and dying. If Pettersson didn't jump.. he would have got merked

If the checker is 6'3, the other is 6'2. 100% shouldn't jump. That changes if the other is 5'9 imo. The Connor's of the league (garland, Bedard, brown) have to do this or they'll get wrecked everytime they're hit.

@@nickmezei2118 jumping is fine done defensively. Its when jumping is launching yourself into an opponent that its not okay. They really need to center the rules on that. You should not be allowed to suddenly launch yourself in any direction into a player. A lot of hits in this video would still be legal with that- someone skates in expecting you to give and you meet them with a solid shoulder, that's good. Its when someone ambushes another player with an upwards or outwards sudden burst that people get hurt. I support the same idea on defensive hits as well- skate into them with a hard shoulder, throw a forearm with it, but dont crouch down and launch yourself.

I think a lot of the danger comes from the reverse hitter basically hitting with their own numbers. The defender coming in usually sees the opponents back, leading them to not brace for contact since it would be called boarding or charging of some kind. But then all of a sudden that players is slamming into you (with some sort of jump a lot of the time) when you were specifically playing to avoid major contact

@@friedsensei I think a large part of the cause for the second type of reverse hit is because refs weren't calling checks from behind or boarding nearly enough. Players decided they had to defend themselves and this is the result. I think that any time the puck carrier is eligible to be checked, he should be allowed to reverse check. Maybe to prevent what you're talking about (reverse check recipients not braced or expecting it, bc they see numbers and know they can't check from behind) is to only call roughing on a reverse check if the positioning would result in a regular check being a boarding or hit from behind; same criteria for player positioning.

Reverse hitting should be TAUGHT, just like checking in general. All the checking rules should apply. If a guy leaves his feet, it’s charging. If the puck is “near” the players in question (like in their skates), then both players should be able to check each other. EVERYBODY needs to learn to keep their heads up and be ready to get hit when the puck is nearby. PERIOD. This is not rocket surgery.
@jsquared1013

@@friedsensei your solution to "fix" this is to allow hits from behind? 😂 brain dead "logic" there. There is absolutely nothing "vicious" about allowing puck carriers to protect themselves. And not at all the "only" way to make it fair. The opposite is more likely to be fair: only call roughing on a reverse check in situations where a regular check would result in a boarding or hit from behind penalty; same criteria for body position of the players regardless of who initiates contact. And a large part of players doing that "throw it in reverse" kind of reverse check is that refs were dropping the ball on calling boarding and hits from behind, so the players decided to take matters into their own hands. If refs called hours from behind and boarding as often as they ought to, I would put money on a coinciding reduction in the "directly reverse" kind of reverse checks.

The fact that so many players and people involved in the game professionally don't know that jumping into a check is boarding is discouraging. And I'm _really_ glad that Svechnikov (or was it Teravainen?) was able to duck that absurd fully-airborne head-targeting flying elbow bullshit that Trouba tried. If it had connected, it was the kind of move that should get a suspension. If Dept of Player Safety was serious about their job, it would have gotten a suspension just for attempting it, especially given how often he leads with the elbow.

Great video and good insight. As a Preds fan, I have loved watching Forsberg throw his butt checks around, but the suspension he got for going too far was definitely valid. Saw it on a couple other comments, but reverse hits need to be clearly defined and taught in that way. From there, we can make some real progress towards making sure all parties can assume some reasonable sense of safety.

They honestly need to do something about it because reverse hits are much more concussion prone than a shove into the boards is. People underestimate just how impactful concussions are and how long they have lasting negative effects. And if the person keeps getting hit while trying to recover from one? Well....that's how Chris Benoit happened. Reverse hitting has to be legal in some form but if you have to stop controlling the puck to be able to do it, that's just an ambush and has nothing to do with defending yourself. Honestly whats going to force them to do something is that someone's gonna take a cheap shot, get a concussion, lose the mental capacity to stop themselves and just have a few hacks at someones face and neck with their stick blade. And it will be warranted, even if people handwring that it isnt. At that point the NHL will have no choice but to do something. Two careers will likely be over, a ton of bad press and ha hell of a lot of accrued brain damage. And the only people to blame are the league for not protecting the players. They'll pay you $8 million a season while you're 30 but wont bother to stop you from not being able to remember your own name at 50.

The biggest reason I have for reverse hits not being called Interference, for hitting someone not the puck carrier, is that if the puck carrier is in a position to play a body then they're also in a position to be hit by whomever they're targetting. If you're in range and don't have the puck then you're already playing the body, or intend to. When driving if you rear end another vehicle, you're often still liable unless there's pretty clear cut evidence of some kind that the car that was hit was out of line. While I do think these reverse hits are getting out of hand, I think it's the approaching player who needs to be mindful of the position they put themselves in. "Damn, if he stops short I ain't ready for that." Just like "Damn, I can't cut that way because the defender with hands is there," or "Dude has 50 pounds on me I can't skate through that." Most of these are bad because the puck carrier often can't see what they're doing because the other player is directly behind them, on their ass. They might have a good idea, but they can't see when to pull the punch, so to speak. It's on the defender to not be in a position to be hit by the puck carrier this way. I have a hard time feeling much sympathy for players who put themselves where they can't be seen and the puck carrier hits them for it. Stop going there. Stop checking from behind, cut around their back and make them turn with you. Wear a cage and not this half visor shit so they can't clock your chin or nose. They have multiple other options to prevent these kinds of reverse hits than adding a rule to the game. How many more defenders have to take a shoulder or helmet to the face before they learn the lesson you ALWAYS learn when getting hit in hockey? Don't do that. Do it differently. That didn't work out. Leaving the ice should always, absolutely be charging. Number contact, especially after a race, should be called checking from behind way more. Charging into corners and boarding should be called way more. Crosschecking should be called more. Until the behavior requiring the calls is appropriately curbed.

I feel like as long as the player with the puck doesn’t move away from the puck (except for the motion of the hit itself) it should be legal. Maybe a way they could put it into the rule book is the player has to be actively playing/ protecting the puck the same way it is in soccer

@0:58 is a perfect example of an illegal reverse hit these types of hits are definitely on the rise again, and because of that i suspect we'll start to see an inflation of injuries. because they're becoming more common, players are trying to blur the lines and the hit @0:58 is a perfect example. two guys racing for the puck and one guy thinks, im going to hit you before i get to the puck and you hit me. kaboom. getting checked isn't a problem, but getting hit when you don't expect it can be a problem. the above example of a reverse hit is blatantly interference, as nobody is at the puck/playing the puck and yet a hit is delivered. this will soon start causing injuries

You brought up some great examples of both good and bad reverse hits. The charging rules should definitely be applied. I mean it already feels like the refs dont always call clear cases of players jumping into one another but maybe a rule book update will bring it to more attention and kind of force them to use their eyes for those situations.

You should be able to reverse hit but not leave the ice. That's the difference, if the D is so impacted by a guy hitting him with his numbers (without jumping), it's most likely because they were coming in too hot looking to do damage themselves.

In some situations it should be. In most, the contact is being initiated by the opposing player. If you push back into what is going to be a body check, then you aren't interfering with the other player.

I think the difference is, the defenseman gaining control of the puck with his back turned to an incoming player who will attempt to displace said puck is more a protective move by the defenseman so he didn't get blasted with the added bonus of then being able to play the puck. Interfering before possession of the puck has been established is potentially stopping a scoring chance by obstructing the body as opposed to playing the puck first... But that's a defenseman's take, and I am admittedly biased towards the defenders.

From your video and from what I can see, the troublesome ones seem to be when the player throwing the reverse hit is fully turned around. I view this as a simple case of self defense. The “hitting” defender is NOT going for the puck in these cases. They are coming straight for the puck carrier. Rules be damned, if you’re coming at me, 5’7”, 145lbs, I’m sure as hell “reverse hitting “ you before you have a chance to damage me! I see that as the difference, if the defender is taking a line at the puck, preemptive hitting is wrong. If the defender is taking a line straight for the puck carrier, he should be in danger of being rung up! That simple.

in order to hit someone you need to be personally be able to be hit, no elbows, no jumping, no hitting with your back, etc. Seider is like the only guy who consistently does it cleanly in my mind. also i feel the puck control should have to be maintained until the hitting motion begins, eg, jimmy has the puck and sees defender approaching from his side, jimmy lowers his shoulder and in doing so loses control and possession of the puck, making that hit is still clean. similar to how you can be hit without the puck if it is a reasonable window after you last had the puck ie checker was committed to the hit before you gave up possession of the puck. in terms of timing and direction the league has been pretty good in the past with cutting down on late hits, hits from behind, etc. id trust them to apply similar rules here, yes it will likely be horrendous for the first couple seasons until the refs get enough looks at good and bad ones but those guys have an okay track record for zeroing in on good spots for game health and player safety

A lot of these examples seem okay to me as long as the puck carrier has clear possession. The ones where they stop before taking possession of the puck and hit the other person chasing, should be penalized as interference. The key difference is that the defender can learn to properly brace if they're skating at a puck carrier with clear possession. The ones done where the offensive player is facing away from the incoming defender create a situation where the defender can't legally check the defender (without risking checking from behind) and the offender is more likely to jump up (by nature of trying to check with your back).
@darkphoenix2
@darkphoenix2 8 күн бұрын
I think interference needs to be called if the puck is not within reach of the player being obstructed. A lot of these hits are done with the puck sort of left behind as the hitter focuses on the check, and at that point the player getting hit has no chance of making a play on the puck. The puck carrier should absolutely be allowed to hit back, but the puck better be right there for the taking.

If he jumped 1/4 of a second later, he would have not left the ice before being hit. I'm sorry, but I just have a tough time thinking that the player getting hit is being dirty. Did the Oiler know he wouldn't have the puck by the time he got there? Of course he did, and he was still going to run Petterson over. Its the playoffs, so you have to hit the players instead of stick-checking, so then they can't play hockey properly. But don't listen to me, I'm here wishing the league was /less/ violent.

@@DoveWrestler you can make a "follow up" check to someone who has passed away the puck, within roughly a second after they pass the puck away. Without that rule, there would be a lot more penalties because you can be lining someone up for a regular check and not have enough reaction time in the event they dump the puck off after they notice you're committed to the guy. People still use it to decide to hit someone half a second or so after passing, but there is nothing really "wrong" or "dirty" about it (assuming the other aspects of the check are also legal). The time gap from when Petterson tapped the puck along the boards and contact from the intended him could be measured in tenths, and his head wasn't down, and he didn't have his back turned towards the defender (until he saw him coming and turned into it, meaning he wasn't unaware it coming). So there is nothing "dirty" about what Petterson did, IMO, other than him jumping.

nice thoughts, well done! will blow up for sure! also: reverse hits without jumping (imo pettersson was ok, he just hopped whats wrong about that, he idnt jump into the other player) should stay totally fine! just cus you have the puck it can't mean you are not allowed to defend yourself its just that there are situations where the checking guy isnt on point and gets wrecked because the other player paid more attention, therefore a skill issue and totally fair.

Hop (v): (of a person) move by *jumping* on one foot.

@@icedo1013sry language barrier, U meant hop as in a tiny jump but getting airborne while receiving a check eliminates a lot of force because now the force just moves the entire body and the feet are free, so you dont get pushed over but only get "reset" a meter further you can see pettersson's position is moved by 2 meters, as if he wad picked up and put down again so I reverse my initial opinion, ut gave him an advantage

Keep the skates on the ice, don't aim for the head. Other than that I think reverse checks are fine. I feel like if you remove that element you're setting a double standard on whether hits should be allowed in the game around the puck at all and limiting the puck carrier's options. When a heavy but legal hit leaves a player dazed or injured everyone talks about how that player should've been prepared or kept their head up or w/e. Works both ways, if you're about to deliver a hit and you yourself are not ready for that player to defend themselves I feel like that's not on the defending player? Props on the puck carrier for playing the puck *and* the body. That said, this is just my opinion and not my interpretation of the rule book.

Except the reverse hit by Elias Petterson while standing still got called for "Charging" & received a 2 minute minor!

One of these days we will peak when we see a player carry the puck from coast to coast and throw off all 5 opposing players... And then scoring.

Defenders are not playing around the hit yet, they need to understand when the puck carrier knows they are there and brace for impact sooner to make it a 50/50 or better if you are hitting from behind

Launching your body into someone without the puck should be the line. Shouldering someone off by getting a better angle and taking them into the boards as you go for the puck? That's just zoning them off, great play. When someone is coming up behind you so you launch backwards into them? Its an ambush, should be charging honestly. Should they be able to stick their ass out to hipcheck someone coming in too fast? Sure. But its the upwards explosion of energy that does it. It will probably take a few iterations to get it right but basically upwards force is the problem. That's what's causing the bad hits to the head and people to get levelled. These hits are concussion makers so you HAVE to do something about it. Its really not good for your industry to let grinders end the career of superstars this way. I value both kinds of players but from an economic standpoint, its the truth.

A lot of these hits were clean by those rules and it clearly gives the carrier a way to defend themselves- someone skates into you and you meet them with a shoulder instead of giving, that's a good play. But if you crouch down and explode up like a jump but without your skates leaving the ice noticeably, that should be the penalty.

I see where you're coming from but as smaller players became more effective (I say this as one) the only way to prevent some of absolutely massive hits is by dumping your shoulder or if you're short, the back or butt into the opposing checker. I think you're floating a thin line before you start removing most hitting for the game. If players aren't at least attempting do defend a hit they're gonna get hurt. If you're a checker plannin on throwing your forearms/shoulder thru the other person's chest or head, and they throw the ass in your way, that's the checkers problem, not the individual receiving the hit. Be a better defender.

I don't think it warrants a rule change. As you pointed out, a lot of these hits - especially the dangerous ones - could easily fall within the interpretation of interference or charging. It just needs to be enforced more and more consistently. Honestly, a lot of the clips you showed here are just textbook interference that would have been called 9 times out of ten if the players had been skating side-by-side.

I see no issue with the vast majority of these hits. Hockey is supposed to be physical and hard hitting. It's what seperates the sport from others. Take the physical play out and you might as well just play broomball

You answered your own question, it's not worth a thought. If you're playing the puck, you get to hit or get hit, in a legal manner. It is the same in every single sport with hitting and possession of a Ball or Puck. Getting hit hard on a reverse hit that you don't see coming is the same as somebody going through The center with their head down...

I think a forechecker coming in on a puck carrier should assume that they will get bumped....because anyone with a puck is fair game to be hit. Why shouldn't the puck carrier have the same privilege.

Hockey has a meta, as is with all multiplayer games that change over time. The meta will adapt to reverse hitting. As long as players can deal with it, they will.
