“He’s [Nixon] like a Spanish horse, who runs faster than anyone for the first nine lengths and then turns around and runs backwards. You’ll see; he’ll do something wrong in the end. He always does.” ― Lyndon Baines Johnson It's a really interesting quote, because LBJ and Nixon have a lot of similarities between them. Both of them were left for dead politically and came back out of nowhere, both started off with humble backgrounds and rose to the top of power, and both have a decent record tarnished by corruption scandals.
@kingusernamelxixthemagnificent3 күн бұрын
Fun fact: both also proposed to their future wives on their first date. Pat refused, but Lady Bird accepted.
@theoldhermit26019 сағат бұрын
That's such a poignant statement, both ironic and sad, considering LBJ ran those "nine lengths" so to speak by taking the oath of office in a time of crisis and going on to win a massive landslide, alongside landmark Civil rights policy and large domestic policy- Only for his career to "turn around" by his escalation in Vietnam essentially destroying his long and storied reputation. Not too dissimilar to Nixon, it's always intrigued me how Johnson went from an immensely popular president with one of the largest popular vote win margins ever, only to be vehemently hated by most of the public and having to decline seeking reelection just four short years later. Its shocking how much can happen in such a short span of time.

When asked in an interview what he wanted to be remembered for, he didn't say Watergate. He didn't say going to China. He didn't say getting the boys home. He said it was the cancer initiative. He mentioned his brother having cancer. And he sounds really genuine. That interview feels like a moment of Richard Nixon the man and Richard Nixon the brother than it does Richard Nixon the President.

Nixon’s always fascinated me as an especially vulnerable president emotionally. A Republican president with little of the neoconservative showmanship of Reagan or Bush Jr, but instead a man who fundamentally wore his insecurities on his sleeves. And while I’m not nearly as paranoid, repressed or misanthropic, I think there’s a bit of Nixon in me in that sense.

Trump had to fight against the East coast liberal elites and snobs just as Nixon did. Tump is the comeback king, just as Nixon was after everyone wrote him off after his failed run for California governor. So many parallels between the two presidents.

The fact that his mother named her sons after English kings is uncanny, because Nixon's public image and legend could be compared to Richard III (specifically Shakespeare's fictionalization). Just like Shakespeare, America tends to remember Nixon as an ugly crippled villain whose defeat was a moral victory. This is arguably unfair and dismissive. I think our rejection of Nixon is a rejection of our darker qualities and faults. It's a part of us that, as a nation, we need to acknowledge and work on.

Your videos inspire me so much, it’s so good to see someone view Nixon with the nuance that has always been there. Historical and political figures were and are human beings, that doesn’t make them wholey good or wholey evil, but always worth looking at and learning from, so we can take those lessons and make things better in our own lives, whether that be for ourselves or others. What you said about Nixon having some of the same physical features as his mother that people exaggerated made me wonder. Did he see those criticisms, not towards him but his mother? I think one of the things about Nixon that really made Watergate what it was was that quite a few people thought that there was something... off about Nixon even before Watergate, when Nixon was still presenting himself as a man of virture, (something often pointed at by comedians, for a little bit of comedic political history, search up 'the 68 Nixon' song) and those who had defended him back then felt really shocked that those people who had thought there was something off about him... were right.

Studiying RN for 40 years, I am quite impressed. I learned something, that Hannah started at Whittier. Another important element is RN's losses in 1960 and 1962, and especially what he took from them. It reinforced his attitude that there will never be another election that will be stolen from him again. This informs his attitude in 1968 and 1972. For further insight into his personality and the themes that you have touched on, read Being Nixon by Evan Thomas. It shows the different influences of Frank and Hannah Nixon in RN's life. Hope your study of 37 continues.

I don’t care for Nixon, personally. The Watergate scandal was a black mark on our country’s history, and eroded much of our faith in our government. But, I listened to his final speech to the White House staff. There was something deeply personal, and vulnerable about his words. His worldview became very clear to me. His deeply ingrained defensive nature. Nearing the end of his administration, as the time for him to resign grew ever nearer, he evoked the memory of his mother, metaphorically running back into the safety of her arms.

He lead our country during a uniquely challenging time and was able to make progress politically, both of which he doesn’t receive credit for. His departure from prior Republican leaders on emerging policy issues - the environment, tribal sovereignty, civil rights, and poverty - leaves a record of putting the public good before partisan dogma. Much of his presidency reflected the fundamental depravity resting in his personality that he couched in self-pity

In no uncertain terms, Nixon saved the Republican party, before him the Democrats had a near 30-40 year stranglehold on the Executive branch only broken by Eisenhower, who didn't really count, Nixon was the first Republican to break that chain.
