CNBC Marathon explores the rise of robots and how they are changing the economy.
A robot named Flippy runs the fry station at a White Castle outside of Chicago. White Castle said it plans to add 100 Flippy’s to its kitchens nationwide. Up to 82% of restaurant positions could, to some extent, be replaced by robots. Automation could save U.S. fast food restaurants over $12 billion in annual wages. And restaurants are also struggling to find workers. American restaurants are down more than 560,000 jobs or about 4.6% of its workforce from their pre-pandemic levels. So what impact will robots have on the fast food industry and the livelihood of its workers? CNBC got a behind the scenes look at restaurant robot maker Miso Robotics to find out.
SoftBank-funded Zume, formerly a robotic pizza start-up, is now making compostable packaging out of agricultural waste, creating a closed-loop system for customers. The $274.2 billion dollar sustainable packaging market is expected to grow to $413.8 billion by 2027, according to Grand View Research. Zume has re-commissioned its fleet of robots to compete in this growing industry. CNBC got a first look inside Zume’s packaging plant, and sat down with Zume Chairman and CEO Alex Garden to learn how compostable products could help solve the plastic waste problem.
Boston Dynamics has sparked the imaginations of the general public with its viral KZbin videos, but the company is now hoping to get the attention of paying customers. Initially, Boston Dynamics received a lot of its funding from the U.S. military and DARPA. Later, it was financed by big-name owners including Google, SoftBank and most recently, Hyundai. All of these companies have tried to steer the robot maker on a path to commercialization, and Boston Dynamics is finally getting there. CNBC got a rare look at Boston Dynamics’ office in Massachusetts, where the team showed off two of the robots they are working to commercialize: Spot and Stretch.

So, if McDonald's saves so much money on employees, then the cost of their food should decrease, as you are not tacking on the cost of salaries . The cost of robots is also declining. Can't blame the employees or robots for food costs going up. Sounds like an inflationary process coming to me.

[That thing there is exaggeration making it sound like aw so revolutionaize] but if the script is done by an Engineer (Vlogger) this is how it should be : The Computer identifies the type of food by reading the QR Code on the handle bar and put it in appropriate fryer. it does it by targeting the orange color in their vision (which is the handle bar) there is no Artificial intelligence going on here. this is PURE programming.

To all the people hating on automation: are you going to go out and force people who don't want these jobs to work them? If the positions aren't being filled then they become automated. Yes, on the one hand it is a cost-effective solution, but there's also the argument that people simply don't want to do these kinds of jobs anymore. A century ago, society praised the rise of automation as they predicted it would allow people to work 4 days a week for a living instead of 5 days. Not everyone wants to be a workaholic.

I visited a few years back and i rented a car bcs i was staying in NJ, My son was young and really wanted to see the city and visit FAO. Decided to drive, the toll was eye watering to say the least. Not to mention that DT traffic. The Public transportation system was a godsend to me. It gave me so much autonomy as a young adult. It allowed me to get jobs that I wld never have gotten in the bronx. When I became of working age I didn’t have to take out a predatory car loan in order to participate in my state’s economy. The state where we live now simply DOES NOT offer anything comparable. And I think it’s a shame.

Exactly. They're complaining that they can't hire people. A USED 10 year old car is around 10k now. That's by their own admission, 1/2 of a years wage for a full time minimum wage worker. How can people afford to work these jobs? The companies have been avoiding taxes and we haven't been investing in our future. Also... they're like "it's cheaper".... yeah, sure it is. Notice how they say it's "software as a service" that they're offering. Betting it's not going to be cheap for long. They can change their prices at any time. @ 4:50 time marker in the video. On the left side, it mentions that the average restaurant worker in the U.S. was paid $12.07 per hour in 2022, with a reference to 11.7 million restaurant workers. On the right side, it shows the cost associated with a robot in the kitchen: $3,500 a month with a $10,000 installation fee. Let's break down these numbers for a single restaurant: Human Worker: Hourly rate: $12.07 Assuming a full-time schedule of 40 hours per week, the weekly cost is $12.07 x 40 = $482.80. Monthly, assuming 4 weeks, this would be $482.80 x 4 = $1,931.20. Annually, the cost is $1,931.20 x 12 = $23,174.40. Robot: Monthly cost: $3,500 Installation fee: $10,000 (one-time cost) Annually, excluding the installation fee, the cost is $3,500 x 12 = $42,000. Including the installation fee in the first year, the total is $42,000 + $10,000 = $52,000. Now, to compare the two, let's consider a few things: The robot's installation fee is a one-time cost, while the human worker's salary is ongoing. Over time, the cost of the robot may amortize and become more economical if it's durable and requires minimal maintenance. The human worker's cost could increase with raises, benefits, and other employment costs. Robots can work continuously without breaks, holidays, or sick days, which could increase productivity. The quality of work, customer satisfaction, and the type of tasks performed may differ greatly between human workers and robots. This is a qualitative aspect that may influence the decision beyond mere cost-effectiveness. With the information given, if a restaurant's primary concern is cost and if the robot can perform the required tasks with minimal downtime, then over a longer period, the robot may be more cost-effective. However, this does not account for other factors that influence such a decision, including the impact on customer experience, the quality of work, and potential maintenance costs for the robot.

This is all great until you start thinking about how copyrights, patents, and trade agreements start to affect the availability of the machines and parts for them. Let's also think about the subscriptions that the creators are charging for allowing a business to keep and provide maintenance for them. Eventually, a company is going to use their monopoly to their advantage to charge outrageous prices to subscribe to their product. We also have to think about how this will affect the repairability of such products with respect to the principles of Right To Repair.

Best part of the industrial composting is that RNG is made and captured as a byproduct by some companies now which is carbon neutral to negative and can be used to get heavy transport like long range big rig tractor trailer trucks and locomotives off fossil fuels.

Yeah this problem only arise if you really narrow your sight setting a limitation on the subject of robot replacing jobs, that causes lesser jobs for serving food. But if you widen your view, more robots being used actually creates more jobs, just not serving food but maintenance agents to make sure these robots deliver its performances accordingly.

Great Video. So you pay programmers/techs and bankers 10 000 hours to work on and design then pass around something that can do 10 000 hours of human work, that is before you tear it apart and take out the grease, dirt and re build it and sell it as recycled robot garbage. This is great more money for everyone. All so we can be lazy and stay alive longer. Not a bad deal...

When the robot malfunctions, your business has to stop because you can't get behind the glass. Now you have more people staying at home, not being paid because your flippy is broken, or has no power, etc👍🏻. 85% of employees could be replaced by a flippy, 85% of people would be unemployed.

Flippy 2 can actually be cheaper.. since it doesn't need tips, doesnt need insurance or benefits, or wage increase. If you do 12.5$ per hour at 40 hours a week multiplied by 4 week by 12 months = 2500$... just 1000$ difference but you save on taxes, benefits, calling sick, tips etc.

Robots are not that difficult to design and develop. Making a robot capable of cooking burgers and self-cleaning is surprisingly easy and could be quite cheap. The issue is that the people who are capable of doing it are difficult to match up with the companies who need the robots. A lunch today, we were discussing immigrant workers who pick strawberries and I was a bit surprised that there weren't harvesting machines to handle the task. People mentioned that it probably would be difficult due to the delicacy of strawberries and it took me approximately 30 seconds on the back of a napkin to draw a machine capable of navigating farm fields, manipulate strawberry bushes, carefully grip the strawberries and clip them close to the berry on the stem. To make it a practical machine, I could probably go from napkin to proof of concept for under $5000 (plus time+labor) in a few weeks. Then the robot can be handed off to a company for polishing the design and moving into production. A single machine could easily work 20+ hours a day and pick strawberries nearly as quickly as a human and with a little effort, a single machine could pick twice as fast by picking on both sides of the row. The way to make these robots happen is to build a website for competitions. Make something like an x-prize. If a fast food restaurant wants these robots, they should offer a first/second/third place prize for people who post the most practical design concept as a paper-napkin drawing. Then, they should provide a budget for proof of concept based on the complexity of the design. Once that happens, they should pilot all three and then go all-in on one of them. Some time ago, I thought it would be fun to design a full, high-volume fast-food restaurant that could operate with a single employee. That means the restaurant should handle the entire food processing chain including cleaning without the assistance of a human. What I came up with was that regularly a truck would deliver a cartridge containing food and cold storage using a self-driving truck that would drop off a cartridge and pick up another cartridge. The food preparation machines would be designed to employ conveyor belts and be easily inserted and removed by robot from another side of the restaurant. So, if something malfunctions, a truck would swap those modules. This is also useful if the machines need additional cleaning attention since things go wrong sometimes. Overall, the entire restaurant would be modular and upgradable through normal operational procedures. The design isn't difficult, it can actually be done quite inexpensively and the people needed who can service and repair the machines can be centrally located at a factory. Realistically, the entire design should be under a million dollars for a full restaurant and the cost of operation should be far less than employing the people who would be replaced. Of course, the design will die on my napkins, in my head and on my cad program because beyond concept, I'm not particularly interested in giving up my career to make these and frankly, there's no practical way for me to share it with a fast food chain who could profit from it. Though, if there was a website where I could upload my concept and possibly win a few thousand bucks, I'd do it.
