The Philippines has a population of about 100 million, but when it comes to football, the country relies on imports. 20 (out of 24) players in the current squad were born outside the country, with parents among the 10 million Filipinos living abroad. The offspring of these expats have helped the team, featuring six German-born players, reach their first ever Asian Cup. But they have also sparked controversy, with a rival coach recently referring to them as "half-blood players". So is the policy of recruiting foreign-born players a smart tactic, or a distortion of the true strength of Philippine football that limits chances for locally-raised footballers? What do you think? Tell us in the comments...

I'm a filipina. When people hear I like football, they say it's boring unlike basketball, that it takes time to score a goal. But that's why I like it. I like the build up anticipation for a goal everytime an oppurtinity is presented and every goal matters.

In the 1920s the Philippines Football Team was a beast in Asia led by the Legendary Barça player Paulino Alcantara (The Lionel Messi of Barcelona, before Lionel Messi), even beat Japan with a 15-2. But Uncle Sam (USA) introduced the game of Basketball, that made Filipinos crazy and in love with it (plus, it boosted/increased the love of Basketball after the Philippine won a bronze medal/3rd Place in the FIBA World Cup in the 1950s). After that Filipinos forgot the game of Football, their first love (Spain introduced football to the Filipinos in the late 1800s).

Been a football fan since Spain won the Euro in 2008. Then in 2010 when the Philippines beat Vietnam in Suzuki Cup that was the time it sparked my interest to follow the National team. It was a long journey and I am proud that it all paid off for everyone who is part and been part of the team to finally playing with the big boys in Asian Cup. I am very grateful that for years that I’ve been cheering for other national teams I will finally get the chance to cheer for my country in Asian Cup. I am a UAE based Filipino I might not be able to watch the games against Korea and Kyrgyzstan but I will definitely watch the game against China as it will be Friday! Laban Pilipinas!

Apple Grace Caliao Yep, I know. You have to be a football fan to really understand it. Hindi talaga sila makakaabot sa Kyrgyzstan to even impose a serious threat ung overall structure ng team was very defensive. 5 at the back four in the middle minsan 2-3-5 formation. We’ve beaten Kyrgyzstan twice in friendly game we could’ve studied that game. Kyrgyzstan was more hungrier and inspired unlike with the Azkals, only Shrock was the only player na doing it all for the team. And the coach, the way he set up the team was an indication na he doesn’t have that belief. Same set of players from game 1-3. Same formation. Same game plan. It was disappointing.

This was a good documentary to show that football is good also here in the Philippines. If there was something I would comment is that it only focused on the situation of football in Manila. It would be nice if they also travelled in the other parts of the country, where football has a different situation. I'm from Negros and in connection of local football history added with the passion of the people here and a local good FC, football is much more known and supported here.

In 1900's the Philippines was one of the powerhouse of Asia. One of there greatest matches are against Japan which the Philippines scores 15 - 2 in the year 1917. One of our best footballer in the history was probably Paulino alcantara and he was categorized as one of the best athlete in Asia he also played in FC Barcelona. He is the youngest player to ever score a goal in the history of the club and he held the most goal of the club for 80 years but Leo Messi surpassed that last 2014. The American teach us the basketball so this country is now a basketball country but as a football fan I wish we can back at the world stage someday.

Football is certainly growing fast in the Asian region and I believe in maybe 8-12 years The Philippines will be able to be at a standard where they can compete at the World Cup. In my country Australia for many years "Football" was seen as "girly" sport as people would prefer the "manly" sports such as Rugby and Australian Football. Prior to 2006 Australia had only qualified for 1 world cup. But due to a massive growth and interest in the sport in the last 10-15 years we have now managed to qualify for every world cup since 2006 and are current AFC Champions. If a country where Rugby League, Cricket, Rugby Union, Hockey, Netball and Basketball is so dominant can achieve this in such a short amount of time I seriously believe The Philippines can also.

Yep, they just needed to get a great marketing strategy for the league and great sports publicist for each team/individual member. They started leagues in smaller cities with some coverage and I think that's a good start. Go local first with free workshops and if possible free tickets/ minimum amount and everything will follow. In my hometown as a student ages ago,we flocked to a 10 thousand capacity GrandStand/ stadium to watch the Philippine Acrobatic Show or other local scenes. It's not impossible if The Philippine Football League will fill up seats like that in the local stadiums across the country.

see it as a challenge for PFF, Philippine Premier league to promote Football here. the diff. with Basketball and Football is in Basketball we were winning Sea Games, Asian Games, made it to the FIBA World Cup, while the previous admin. of PFF failed to promote and popularize the game of football here, no pro league, our National team for the most part sucked, 13-1 to Indonesia, 13-0 to Japan, up to now are Youth teams can't even beat Laos,Brunei. there's a lot of problem with Football here, competiting with Basketball shouldn't be included. there's no need to compete with Basketball.

I hope it can but won't be easy. Hopefully within this decade or soon after we will see a team in the WC. If we can make a WC in this decade we need a breakout star like Pacquio was in boxing. I believe we can develop. Fact Pacquio beat the odds and became a star out of nowhere makes me believe it is possible in this country. Even if basketball is still number one if we just pout right mindset into soccer we can shock the world. I believe we have the heart and adversity that most countires in Asia don't have. I believe we can play with the passion like Brazilians, Colombians or Mexicans if we just even put 25-50% of our hearts into soccer. Not saying we will be like Brazil but saying we can play with their passion and pull some miracle if we just get the talent and keep improving.

Korea vs Phillipines will be the first game in the Asian Cup. Top player in Asia who plays for Korea, Son Heung Min(Tottenham Hotspur star player) will not be playing in any of the group games. Korea is still expected to top the group. Korea is so confident that they will top the group, they left out not only Son Heung Min but few other of their top players. I was impressed by Phillpines run in the Suzuki Cup(ASEAN Championship), now I understand why after watching this video....plenty of foreign impact. If Philippines can park the bus vs Korea and lose by no more than 2 goals, then that would be an achievement. There is no way Philippines will want to play open game vs Korea, because it will be a slaughter. I think Philippines maybe able to draw China and Kyrgyzstan....just maybe if they play their best. Remember, Asian Cup is the top tournament in Asia....competition at its highest.....nothing like Suzuki Cup playing minnow teams Cambodia, Singapore, or Laos. Even if Phillipines suffers drubbing at this top tournament, it's the fact that they qualified to make it and the experience participating will go a long ways.

Hi. really good docu DW kick off, just one thing though, we don't call those player as import, we call them Overseas-Based player, or foreign-born Filipino player. Philippines allow dual citizenship and those who have a Filipino parent at that time of their birth can be considered as Natural-born Filipino. There's also problem with our grassroot football, PFF keep on sending youth teams that are not ready, only trained for a few weeks, and the PFF expect them to competitive against Thailand, Vietnam, and other neighboring countries.

Paulino Alcantara was born in the province of Iloilo in the Philippines. Alcantara spent the majority of his playing career at Spanish giants FC Barcelona, making his debut for the club at the tender age of 15 and still remains the youngest ever goalscorer for the club. He is considered to be the clubs first hero who was famed for having a ferocious shot and was given the names “El Rompe Redes” or “Trencaxarxes” (the net breaker) after he broke the net with a shot against France in a friendly whilst playing for Spain. Alcantara played international for Catalonia, his native Philippines and Spain; he was selected to play for Spain at the 1920 Olympic games but chose to stay at home to complete his medical exams. Still to this day the name Paulino Alcantara is revered by Barcelona fans and remains the 6th highest scorer for the club with 143 official goals but ranks 2nd behind Lionel Messi in total goals for the club with 369.

I can't blame Filipinos if they prefer Basketball than Football. Football needs an open space to play even an indoor Futsal. Its impractical. While Basketball you need is just a hoop and a Ball. That's it viola! You can play basketball. Even in your own backyard. PS: I played both Basketball and Football. Both are fun I can't hate one sport and support another.

I do think the government can try to implement for futsal in courts which can get more people invested in the sport. I agree issue is the major cities have no green space unfortunately. I do think the provinces have more green space, so maybe the government can try to push for soccer in those regions. Basketball is my favorite sport, so I don't mind it being the number one sport in the Philippines and I think it should. I do think soccer can be such a great sport for Filipinos to take part in because if your watching the European tournaments right now, you see the passion and special energy. Your right there are many unfortunate issues. If government can bring back more public green space in the cities like Manila, hopefully they can push for soccer there. Philippines deserves to have its own Messi, Ronaldo, Mpappe, and Son from Korea to a lesser extent. Country needs to achieve in things like soccer and basketball than just winning these beauty pageants.

Philippine politics, corruption, and poverty is already a uphill battle for Filipinos to overcome. Basketball is my number one sport so I think it is still great if Filipinos do better and always be part of the culture. I also like soccer as well which is why I think it would be amazing and I think a good impact on the country if it becomes big. If anyone has watched the world cup or the UEFA Euros right now, the intensity, passion, and atmosphere is arguably the best in the world even over the Olympics. It's not everything, but for a country that already deals with BS, having a team that can make the WC or just be more competitive in Asia can do many good things for my opinion. The issue is the lack of green space and getting soccer popular, but I believe with more effort, soccer can be like a very close second to basketball where kids will literally play basketball on Friday, soccer on Saturdays, or literally the same day. I can go on and on, but I'm going to say this, if the Philippines can have that one star like Messi with Argentina, Neymar with Brazil, Ronaldo with Portugal, Mpappe with France, or to a lesser extent a Son Heung-Min from Korea, the guy can achieve something special for the youth. I don't think Filipinos get these guys are paid millions and even more than athletes in America or even Pacquiao. I don't Filipinos have ever experienced the magic and passion of the crowds in these international games as well. Filipinos deserve to experience this more than beauty pageants for my opinion.

I played FIFA and was amazed how beautiful the game was. I hope networks here broadcast more football leagues (EPL, Laliga, Bundesliga, UCL) so that children can also watch the best players such as Messi who has a small height same as Filipinos. Maybe setting the best examples same as Filipinos look into NBA players could be the same as Filipinos look at football and brings more interest to play the sport. I really hope for the best when it comes to Filipino football. I have been following what is going on in Asia and the fact there are now 24 participants in the Asian Cup is simply a great opportunity. Having teams like Philippines, India, Kygysztan, Turkmenistan and Lebanon is a chance to expand football in the continent and to draw millions of people. It takes lots of time and effort but a start is needed and I was actually glad when Philippines guaranteed a place in the Cup. May it be the beginning of something great. Thailand has shown improvement and Vietnam is on the way so filipinos can join them in a near future. There are well established regional superpowers (Australia, South Korea, Japan, Iran, Saudi Arabia) and a group of teams that are on the rise and poise a threat (Jordan, China, Uzbekistan). Hope to see ASEAN nationas be there soon. Greetings from Colombia.
