Same, don't judge me for this, I genuinely don't find him funny, I get the humour, but one-liners don't do it for me, I prefer my Billy Connolly's and Lee Evans's, but, I feel like his work for Mental Health, I'm suddenly a lot more interested, I'm not really suffering but it *IS* very important, he seems a very wise man

3:14 the Maslow illustration is interesting. By not having the base of the pyramid figured out, it created a greater sense of individual purpose and identity, but it also fostered greater cooperation for survival. Now, most societies have guaranteed basic human needs, causing a detachment from the group and promoting individualism and a lack of cohesion within society. Interestingly enough, more people than ever feel lost and hopeless. 🤯

Don't put too much emphasis on being a "real man". Emphasize being the best version of yourself instead and stay true to yourself regardless of what anybody else thinks. There's no such thing as a "real man", only the real you. Being a stereotype won't make you happy, it will just make you even more confused. You, and only you know what's best for yourself and that's that.

Some good stuff and some bad stuff. For one, being a gentleman has nothing to do with toxic masculinity because the term is based on the perception of the accuser. During the Cold War it was very well understood that Communism was the replacement for religion in Communist countries. With no religion it replaced religion, giving fanaticism an outlet. There is a line from Stephen Kotkin, Princeton professor writing a 3 volume work on Stalin. He was asked by an interviewer, what the biggest revelation for historians was once Russia opened the files to them to study. He said it was that these guys were really Communists. It wasn't about power or money...they truly believed in Communism. And they were determined to make it a reality no matter the cost. Humans will seek identity and purpose somewhere, in something. Religion, God, fulfill that. If people lived their actual religions it would actually be a pretty nice world.

It is quite sad and indeed telling a lot about us. I come from India, and for me growing up as a millennial, traveling outside India was like a dream, next to impossible. Today, I am married to a beautiful woman, I have been to Dubai (lived there rather), lived in London, lived in Taiwan and basically lived across the entirety of India. But, I have bipolar disorder. Once I (or my family) reached a state of comfortable life, our priorities turned upside down. Today, my wife and I are deeply scared of bringing another life in this world. We have more than we could ever ask for and yet we feel we dont have enough to support our baby. We have become paralyzed by our comfort.

This is speaking to me at a lot of levels because ill describe it like this lets look at Fallout New Vegas I had freedom there to help, be someone, and people not telling me what to do and still can do good. In the real world was constantly told no, not allowed to try or whenever did try did not do well so someone would take over and not give me time. Never invited, was left behind then looking back (early 30’s now) just went fck it went to work and went home to play video games and getting off on porn because people just straight up ticked me off not allowing me to do things or wasting time only can watch others have fun at gatherings. Am thankful being free from those addictions and its been a struggle learning new things but have been changing well taking some more risks, been a slow start but off a new journey.

Yup, I second this. In Skyrim you explore a world where many people can use your help and where there are such heights to achieve and mysteries to uncover. Meanwhile my parents taught me not to take risks, I am perfect the way I am. It's their trauma, they felt neglected and worthless all their childhoods so they wanted the opposite of that for me. Many men are raised as precious treasures. But for most, somewhere between 16 and 25 that is suddenly disproven. Your parents raised you on a lie. Everything takes so much work and trial-and-error. People assume you know how everything works and if you don't, that's on you. After a childhood of luxury and safety you suddenly have to learn everything the hard way and aren't given any leeway or guidance. There is an easy way of instant gratification available so you take it instead, because that's just human nature. It's not our fault. And as a man you are presumed guilty of being sexually perverted. A generation of women filled with bitterness for men. The moment they get their hands on one agreeable, kind, one they can mould, they make him into their perfect puppet and ruin him while still fawning over those who offer status and fun.

Good points from an evident thinker. The issue I have with atheism is that 1. One needs to accept that one doesn't know how the universe and the near infinite complexity of micro and macro biological life came about. Saying it's all a random event is not a serious position, especially as the simplest amoeba cannot be made in the laboratory. 2. God is one hypothesis, and to eliminate it for emotional reasons is not rational. 3. When faced with this question the atheist laughs in one's face - like Dawson does.

Not sure if it's that black or white. You can live online for like 2 hours a day and still take risks and connect in real life. It's only when you get addicted to the online life and neglect the rest that there is obviously a big problem (as with any addiction really).

this dude's absolutely right...but what he's saying is through the lens of the previous generation. There could be a paradigm shift happening that dude doesn't get. A 14 year old boy almost HAS to play video games at this point if he wants to have friends. Because they all do it. Advising a boy not to play video games would be social suicide for most young people.

Interesting. Are we giving our agency away? Do we create the online worlds ourselves? Are we being sold these dopamine fixes by companies?

Its hard not to agree with most of it. I myself did... But there's just one point that need to be observed better. When he mentions about video games, if what he refers to is addiction purely, lile someone that can't do anything else... Yes, its bad. Like anything else you can be addicted to... Cigarettes for example (in a different manner). But just the action of liking video games and enjoying it, no thats not bad. Video games are much more than just having some fun or pass your time nowadays. Try to play some real good games, the good well made ones. Is pure art... We have very interesting stories, amazing plots, challenges and motor skills training, fast response practice, fast thinking and problem solution thibgs... (that are good for your brain) plus the art itself like amazing Music, sound effects, visuals and design.... Nowadays we have much better time playing games than watching movies. Think about that. There are no good ideas for movies anymore... They are taking the histories and plots from games and do series and movies.

I agree with him, but I think he tells half of the story from a position of privilege. If you do great in your career, love life or in any field you do not understand what it takes to move from the problem to something better, to find what really works for people that actually have the problems you need to listen from people that walked that path, there are some out there and youtube has given them a voice, that is good. It’s Milei in Argentina, the selfmade people, the rags to riches or the fat to fit stories, that’s the other half.

Why can't we just let people be sad without stomping all over the validity of their feelings? Can't they just be sad for a while and then let the feeling pass, and then go do something when they feel better? Why do we have to say stuff like "YOURE REALLY LUCKY IF YOUR LIFE SUCKS LOL. SO SUCK UP YOUR TEARS BUTTERCUP" Like cmon dude.

@@Motiv-Plus-Action I know this from direct experience. I suddenly developed severe depression in my 20s. Nothing I tried from a Western perspective worked i.e. anti-depressants and Psychiatry, although improving my diet, stopping drinking and starting to exercise every day helped. I started to research methods from the East and as soon as I sat Zen meditation for the first time I knew that was the answer. After 8 years I also picked up Tibetan Buddhism and now 28 years later I experience blissful states of mind every day. I know how dreadful depression is, but I also know the path out of it. An easy way to start is to recite the 6-syllable mantra of compassion = Om mani padme hum.
