Gotye is one of the real ones. He was in it to make fantastic music, and that he did/does. The music he's been making is awesome. The live album that was released a couple years back was phenomenal! I completely understand him not wanting that *enormous* amount of fame that he and Kimbra got with the release and consequent smash hit of "Somebody that I used to know". I'm fairly certain that I'd do exactly what he did if that ever would have happened to me. I mean, you wouldn't even be able to focus on the music anymore, or even just walking outside, shopping for food... Nothing. Just paparazzi and other leeches everywhere, plus everyone and their mother has got an opinion on every little thing in your life... That sounds like hell to me, honestly. Naah, I understand him. I heard an interview with John Darnielle (main force behind The Mountain Goats) on the Depresh Mode podcast a few years ago, and as the podcast is about mental health, the host John Moe asked Darnielle what he thought about people saying things like “you saved my life” to him. Darnielle had a fantastic response, something along the lines of, “when people say that they’re giving me too much credit. I myself or my music didn’t save you, you did. I’m happy my music gave you inspiration, but you were the one who pulled yourself back from that dark place. Don’t forget to give yourself that credit.”

Then things kinda wind down when members branch out into solo projects (acting, music, producing etc.) or enlist. One of the BTS guys was saying that was the industry norm and that it was super rare to release albums as a full group after your 5th year.

a decent example of chappell's rise to fame is; last year my hometown pride booked chappell for their 2024 pridefest. it's not a big city, in a red state, & the festival isn't huge; it was a good fit tho b/c when they booked her chappell was still pretty up & coming. but within that year since they booked her, she rose to the level of fame she's at now. and (i won't get into specifics) b/c of her current level of fame my hometown's pridefest became a hazard!!! b/c thousands & thousands of people were travelling from HOURS away to see her!!! and I genuinely cannot imagine how difficult that must be to deal with, to go from booking medium-size venues to fucking 10,000+ crowds in less than a year. society isn't kind to people in that level of fame either; parasociality, heightened expectations, even villification. i really hope it doesn't burn her out too badly, b/c it's so refreshing to have a lesbian pop star pushing the boundaries of costume & expression like this.

On a much smaller scale I have a small crochet channel which on average gave me approx 600-800 views per video. I had built up a nice little community with 5000 subscribers and it was my small corner of loveliness. One video, for some reason went absolutely crazy and hit almost 30’000 views and I freaked out!! I havnt posted for about 3 months now. Having that many people viewing, commenting and sometimes trolling was too overwhelming and my little brain couldn’t cope. I liked my small little community- it was cozy and comfortable!

I love Chappell Roan I’ve been a fan of her since Pink Pony Club randomly ended up in my Spotify discover weekly back in 2021 and I’ve desperately wanted her to blow up for years now but I’m also worried about how insanely fast and crazy things are going for her right now. Like I don’t want her to become just another trend and then fall off like we’ve seen with other artists in the tiktok age, I want her to have all the success she deserves. I’m a small-ish social media artist - for the longest time I just posted doodles on Twitter to a group of let’s say ~100-200 people, most being dead accounts and/or friends I made online. It's incredible how quickly she went from a queer indie artist that KZbin recommended to me, to appearing on Jimmy Fallon and headlining major music events. I think a lot of us have seen that music industry often exploits talent, and I really hope Chappell can navigate this and protect her energy. It would be heartbreaking to see her built up only to be torn down, like we've seen with so many artists. Doja Cat comes to mind as someone who's become jaded due to her treatment online and in the media. I wish there were a way for artists to showcase their talents without sacrificing their mental and physical health.

The thing that broke my heart about the Raleigh concert with Chappel was that was originally booked at the Ritz (a much smaller cozier venue), but because of how fast it sold out it got moved. So my guess was the Raleigh show was booked to be a smaller check in point post all of the festival stages, but it was just further proof that it is unlikely that she will ever be on a smaller stage and be able to make direct eye contact again.

Keep in mind that BTS’s success in the US was to a scale that had never been seen before in the K-pop industry. The closest would be Gangnam Style by Psy, but that blew up as a meme song and not with a serious fanbase the way BTS did. They’ve talked about how it was overwhelming and how they nearly didn’t continue their contract

really reminds me of exid in the kpop scene, in 2015 getting to be the most popular group with a song over 6 months old after disbanding, thanks to one video that just became viral. its also a way to look at how it could be 10 years after as i dont recall many circumstances like that from so long ago. the backlash too, too thick and too thin, being called too boring and not innovative while also being tolf that their new stuff sound nothing like the reason they all got famous, somehow all 5 girls manages to get out of this situation and become household names in korea while also still having a personal life. they have an amazing story, and managed to survive the fast fame.

I got to see Laufey recently at a local Jazz festival and between the time that I bought my ticket and seeing the show she blew up and won her grammy. The show was completely packed which was challenging for an outdoor venue. Hard to say how much safety was in place as well. Not all of them, but a few of the teens around us were like, very high energy/screamy type fans too which wasn’t necessarily what we anticipated when we bought the tickets. It was an interesting phenomena to watch, but she seems to be handling her bigger shows very well regardless! Super talented and deserving, and i highly recommend her music to any vintage jazz loving romantics!

Oh gosh I relate so much to what you're saying around 12:00, even on a smaller scale I'm an artist and disability rights activist (disabled myself). The second part kinda happened by accident just because I wrote a speech for a certain event and people from this event keep reaching out to me for other events and representation opportunities. Last one was the biggest one with local politicians and I had so much anxiety about messing up. But the weirdest part was processing that I had a fancy hotel room paid by a big organization because they wanted me there. My girlfriend and I both come from low income backgrounds, so we absolutely lost it when there was no parking at the hotel because there was a VALET for her old broken down car 😂 I'm not famous by any means, but even with this small amount of visibility I keep pushing that it's not about me, it's about my work and I keep freaking out about all the luxuries these opportunities offered me. I'd be so scared to not deliver what people expect of me or become desensitized to that opulence... Such a crazy weird feeling!

it's so interesting that you mentioned troye sivan. it made me think of dan and phil who were famous really quickly because they were a part of that uk youtube crew, they had a bbc radio show, and they toured. they've talked recently about how that's affected them, and you can def see in their older videos how stilted they were. not only were they famous, but they were famous Because They Might Be Gay. i'm glad to see them comfortable right now with their audience that like them for them and not because they're a part of a popular group, youtube, disney, etc

I saw her at a small 2,000 capacity courtyard venue downtown near me. Courtyard as in it was literally built out of the courtyard of an old hotel that's now condos, businesses, and other private residences. Zoning would NEVER allow it today. Some people eirher bribed or snuck their way onto the roof of one of the surrounding buildings (literally ~100ft from the stage, two stories up) because tickets were so expensive. I would have been impressed if i wasn't so worried for their safety. I also got told off by security when I tried to talk to the people on the roof because the walkway I crossed to get closer to them was apparently outside the bounds of the venue. That same security guy also then immediately told a woman near me "that's your last drink". This was all before the show had even started. I then spent most of the concert in the corner overstimulated. Not a fun time, but I'm somewhat glad I at least went? She's probably never gonna play venues that small again.
