About 8 or 9 years ago, my husband and I were heading into a Paul McCartney concert. I spotted Brian Wilson standing in the lobby. It looked as if he was waiting for someone else before going to his seat. He looked just as excited and happy to be there as everyone else. We were just about three feet away from him. I wanted to get closer and ask him for his autograph, but I got too nervous, and I also didn't want to disturb him while he was on a night out to have a good time. When I shouted, "Hey Brian! gym shoe I agree, the Beatles all came from not necessarily poor environments, but they definitely lived very hard-scrabble. Here's what I think: Paul felt early on he'd "won", and knew Brian was struggling mentally. He acted like a good winner, and rather than pushing Wilson, perhaps knowing it would break him, he raised him to his own level, perhaps saving Brian's life in the process. Who knows if Paul would've been as graceful hadn't he come out on top -- but he saw a person, beyond the profession, and it's a sign of great empathy to not revel when someone else is suffering.

@@kaywaters4427 Not insult the best measure for success, but fanship wasn't the rivalry they were referring to. Pete pulled it off with the massive rock sound of electric guitar through vacuum tube 100 watt Marshall Stacks. After all, he did invent the big 8 12" speaker cabinet for these guitar amps. Although these first big Marshall's were just one tall cabinet until the roadies complained of back trouble, so they it cut into an upper 4 and lower 4 speaker cabs stacked.

I dont think there is any comparison, and Pet Sounds is one of the most over-rated records ever. Theres only 2 or 3 good songs on the album. The Beach Boys invented a new sound, a very original sound, but all their songs sounded similar, that surfing beach boy sound. The Beatles evolved with every record, with different sounds , and they got better, almost every song on their albums was good. By 1967 Brian fried his brain with drugs and it was pretty much over for them. Beatles have a much bigger catalog of hit songs, and classics. Beach Boys deserve credit for their original unique sound but they didnt evolve past that sound and it sounded dated by the late 60's. Just my opinion though.

Having said that the Beatles never have been nor never will be overrated. If anything they are a little underrated because their music is so damn sophisticated even from their very early stuff. Really excellent video. An important objective difference that was pointed out is that Brian did everything, songwriting, producing, arranging, whereas The Beatles were a 3-headed monster, Lennon, McCartney, Martin. When one needed musical assistance, the others were there to help. Who did Brian have to turn to that was the equivalent of the Beatles team. And on top of that, George Harrison came into his own as a song writer.

@jakesnake664 жыл бұрын
Well done. Thanks for this video. It's really impossible to measure influence, impact, importance...but as a die-hard, near-obsessive Brian Wilson fan I have no problem acknowledging that the overall significance of the Beatles outweighs that of the BBs/BW. They were highly productive and relevant far longer, and their COOL factor enabled them to profoundly impact R&R. My mentors almost to a person cite the Beatles' appearance on Ed Sullivan as a seminal experience. We can never count how many musicians were spawned from that singular performance. There is no equivalent with the BBs. Both bands impacted tremendously on an artistic, esoteric level, but the Beatles had an equal if not greater impact at the pop level for many years. However, the one area where Brian Wilson stands head and shoulders above all others is the sheer magnitude of his individual achievement. Considering Brian's non-combative personality and insecurities, it boggles the mind that he accomplished PS. Not only was Brian solely responsible for the massive creative output, but he very literally had to *fight* for his vision. The man had almost ZERO support from the very people he most wanted to please! This is the part of the story I just cannot reconcile. How Brian found the fortitude to push all this through on his own, with the record company and Mike Love discouraging him just defies belief. The Beatles had every advantage. Brian had few. Yet Brian still equaled the height of artistic expression if not the breadth and duration.

Almost every video on the BB involves the Beatles but the same isn't true of the Beatles videos. People who have to make a comparison or feel they have to defend their team are so silly. I love them both and thank god they existed. Their music has inspired me to learn music theory, play guitar and now piano. They sound completely different yet the guy making this video has to say stupid shit regarding his own countries band the BB. Why...? When you understand music theory you can hear what is great about both. They both wrote the finest songs for the 20th century by a long way for popular music and the output from the Beatles was staggering (300 songs 8yrs) If Brian Wilson had not been so ill with depression, anxiety and all that he would of written many more songs too and this is something I feel a little cheated out of because that would of been wonderful. Nevertheless we have what we have and the worlds a much more beautiful place because of it. I must say though that Revolver is my fav album but if SGT Peppers had Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane on it as they were intended then that would of been just as great.

To really understand The Beach Boys, of course you need to know the fun in the sun songs, Pet sounds and good vibrations but you also need to know the many albums that are sadly not as well known like Friends, Smiley smile, wild honey, 20/20, sunflower, surfs up, Holland, Carl and the passions ‘so tough’, ‘love you’, their self titled album and their latest album. Also the smile sessions. Overall The Beach Boys were more or less on par with the Beatles in the 60’s and continued making fantastic albums decades after the Beatles broke up. And pet sounds and smile two masterpieces that in my opinion top sgt pepper, abbey road and the white album any day. Even in the early days I still prefer The Beach Boys’ music personally because of their harmonies which the Beatles rarely had. You can’t beat Brian’s falsetto. Overall, the Beatles are really amazing but I prefer The Beach Boys personally.

@@danadams8649 Hendrix? You do realize Jimi tried hitting up Paul before he died because he wanted to collab right? Jimi made mostly noise with a fucking whammy bar. McCartney has been a musical genius since he picked up a guitar. Every artist you just named had flashes in a fucking period of time. Paul McCartney is timeless. If you look at Lennons solo career, he had some bangers, sure. But during that time Paul made a band and went on tour with a complete different sound and they fucking rocked. John went on tour with Yoko and played shit from his solo albums with musicians I can't name. I can't tell you who was in George's band or Ringo's band. Paul had Denny Lane, Jimmy McCulloch, a fucking brass section featuring Thaddeus Lewis. A band that ripped through the 70s, went platinum and then Paul got caught up in Japan with a little pot and the band split. Paul went on to collab with Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Steve Miller, Carl Perkins and so many more artists in just the 80s alone. Paul McCartney has stayed relevant. Even his shit in the 2000s. Have you listened to chaos and creation in the back yard? Obviously you're biast againts McCartney but I encourage you, if you're open minded to play that album on your own, on a road trip, fishing, on a bike ride, on the bus, wherever you find yourself alone with headphones and really listen to that album. Take in the instruments, his words. From top to bottom it's one of his greatest works of art. Every instrument, all recorded by him which Isnt uncommon in his work. Fuckin Egypt Station topped the billboards. You name one artist from the 60s who made any sort of "comeback" and topped the billboards going platinum. He's the one man who has never sold out. Several SNL appearances, Grammy awards, late night shows, still rocking in 2020 has to make him the greatest musician in history and modern day rap artists get it and pay respects to the legend himself. The competition between the two bands wasn't motivated by money, at all. The competition was purely centered around music. They both pushed each other to be maximum in their creativity. Brian Wilson loved Rubber Soul and McCartney heard Pet Sounds and was blown away; and proceeded to grind Pepper. The funny thing is most folks don't know that Wilson and McCartney loved each others' music. Pet Sounds is on equal par with Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and vice versa. If one reads some different articles on Paul, he actually has Pet Sounds in his playlist.
