Brian can go from near-catatonic to outrageously animated. It's been said that all the brain damage / parental abuse stuff really didn't affect him to such a degree and that he's made a game of putting people on his whole life as a way to get what he wants, or to just get away from everyone. I have met him several times - even recorded in the studio with him - and I can truly say that NOTHING gets past Brian Wilson. He is totally aware of everything and everybody around him.

The first session lasted all of ten minutes. He brought in a scribbled chart, handed it to me, then showed me what he wanted me to play. It was a re-make of "Gimme Some Lovin'". We did one take and he got up and walked out. Several months later I got called again. This time it was Billy Hinsche (and me) on guitar, Dennis, Jim Guercio on bass, and Brian on piano. Brian wanted to do "Shortnin' Bread" (for the 800th time - he's obsessed with that song). That session lasted several hours with Brian bringing out the "Fire" tapes from the studio vault to play for everyone..

Once you get Brian talking about music, he really lights up. It’s kind of admirable. He’s still very introverted, especially in the forced interviews that he occasionally has to do (less and less in the last decade). But once you get him talking about elements of music, he just lights up and immediately he’s 40-50 years younger. The guy is true blue. A musical genius.

I know exactly what you mean! I have been obsessed (my wife's word) with Brian Wilson for several months now. I've always loved the Beach Boys, but, lately I've really focused on how they became so big. And there's only 1 answer to that...Brian. Obviously the whole band was incredibly talented, but, the world is full of incredibly talented musicians. But, add in the sheer genius of Brian Wilson, you can't lose! Clearly the best songwriter, producer, composer ever. And his amazing falsetto voice is something I've always been SOO jealous of my whole life!! I try and try to reproduce that, but, there just is no substitute! I would absolutely LOVE to meet him, and just talk music. That's my life's new goal. INGREDIENTS 3 tablespoons (45 ml) butter 3 tablespoons (45 ml) flour 2 cups (500 ml) milk 1/2 onion, finely chopped 1 pinch nutmeg PREPARATION Measure 45 ml (3 tablespoons) of butter and 45 ml (3 tablespoons) of flour per 500 ml (2 cups) of milk. Melt the butter over medium heat in a saucepan, add 1/2 chopped onion and stir until tender and almost translucent (looks like you can see through them!). Sprinkle the flour on the butter and onion and stir with a whisk. Let the butter and flour mixture cook for 1 minute over medium heat, whisking constantly. That way, your bechamel won’t taste like flour. This step is called making a roux. The roux is used to thicken your milk and give you a nice creamy sauce. Add the milk and a pinch of nutmeg, stiring constantly with a whisk. Bring to a boil (over medium-high heat). If you stop whisking, your sauce will be lumpy. When the consistency of your sauce becomes thick and creamy (you feel your arm getting tired of stirring!), remove from the heat and season with salt and pepper. Taste before seasoning.
