The Road to Dundee. Haven't heard this before. Perhaps this is the route Bert took when he got that job in the Steamie on Caldrum Street, featured in Beeswing. Yes, that was a real steam laundry, on Caldrum Street, in Dundee. There was a book published about it.

I read that Bert really didn't like open tunings. So drop D makes the most sense. And being that he didn't surround himself with a bunch of guitars, he could have tuned differently, it made for less work on stage. Jorma calls drop D the alternative to open tuning. Thank you.

Thanks. As I say in the comments, at least one other transcriber assumes he played it in DADGAD capo 3. Some other tunes on the album are in DADGAD, and it's possible to play it that way. But as I said in the comments, it works (and sounds) much better this way (drop D capo 5).

Hello again Jon. Do you have a web page? And do you sell your tab transcription?
@Jonpriley
@Jonpriley 3 жыл бұрын
I don't have a web presence (yet), other than this channel and a facebook page: facebook.com/Jon.P.Riley. I do sell transcriptions, but this tune will be available (in its entirety) in the forthcoming second volume of Bert Transcribed. You'll have to wait till May or June (publisher's current estimate), but the whole book (30 tunes) will cost you less than I charge for a single transcription. ;-)

what no singing, no attempt to learn the vocal part, ay the most important part of the tune.(sad😑) you need to forget the guitar (really) set it aside. and concentrate on how he (Bert) sang the words of the poem and and how you might do the same, breath life into the same simple words, when you know that you'll be rounded and a better musician. then maybe put in the accompaniment guitar bit' that you've slaved to know. (after you've sung along with Bert a few times.😉) so how long did it take to learn that little bit of tune if you'd just put as much effort if not more into the vocal you' will find your own voice and not be a copycat. You'll be famous and on the telly wow!. very nice work by the way can't fault your picking did you learn from tab or by ear. drop D capo 5 you say. might have a go my self, it is a pretty song and you've done all the hard work. most excellent of you by the way.

Not sure how serious you're being, but you really wouldn't have wanted to hear me sing 😉. I'm a guitar player, not a singer - I know where my skills lie and where they don't - and in any case this was only intended as a demo for other guitarists. But thanks for the compliments. I learned it by ear, of course. Tab does exist for it (you can find it online), but in what I think is the wrong tuning (DADGAD capo 3, see my comments).

@@Jonpriley wasn't being nasty son. just it's half of the song, voice and guitar the whole is better than the parts separate If you think you haven't the vocal skill 😑 then find someone who can sing it for you. my thought though, better to learn to sing easier in the long run and much more fun yes it will take a little longer, songs. but won't take that much longer. that musician inside of your head will see to that. it's like any muscle if you don't exercise the damn thing it will always let you down and saying you can't is setting a limit. train your voice, you will be amazed at how easy it is to become a singer it'll make you guitaring better as well take you to the next level.

@@oldbladderhorn949 Thanks for the advice - I don't need it, as I'm well aware of all those issues, but you weren't to know that ;-). I think you're still misunderstanding the reason I uploaded this. I teach guitar professionally, I've been playing (and even singing sometimes!) for 55 years, I occasionally work for the Bert Jansch Foundation, I do a lot of guitar transcription, and was largely responsible for this book: www.amazon.co.uk/Bert-Transcribed-Jansch-Songbook/dp/178558555X/ref=sr_1_1. Not trying to brag here, just giving you some background. I do agree with everything you say! :-)

@@Jonpriley and me calling you son.... Dad.👴 Yes a most excellent book, but the font was so small I'd missed your name as editor management of content. got it because of the good reviews. and being i was lazy to figure a small section of Black water side it was bothering me, a music Sudoku puzzle the book is more of a hint and a cheat somewhat, yes 🙄 quite expensive really for one or two bars though are there any other books in the works if so do an albums worth maybe avocet, or just kittiwake there's a lovely hint of a bag pipe hidden in the tune a Scottish flavoured thing to noodle on.

@@oldbladderhorn949 There is another volume "in the works", in the sense that 30 more tunes have been prepared. But there has been no decision yet as to a go ahead with a publisher. That all has to be organised by the Foundation, so I'm just waiting... Avocet is not in the list, but Kingfisher is. I do have tab for Avocet, at least for the guitar parts, referred to a couple of live versions as well as the album version. But if you want it, I would need to charge you my private commission rate - which is more than the price of that book! 😑 However, you can see my somewhat clumsy attempt at the opening section (for free!) here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZoPIhouGocpgetU.
