For we must all appear before “the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.” (2 Corinthians 5:10) We will be judged for every deed we do whether is be good or bad. This isn’t something to worry about even if our bad deeds out weigh our good. Because none are good before God, all have sinned against Him and cursed His name, but He in His tender loving mercy hath given us His Son as our ransom. When Jesus was dying all of Gods wrath and judgement was poured out onto Him even though He was sinless. He was sacrificed and tortured on our behalf though we are sinful and carnal. Christ payed our sin debt with His perfect sinless blood so we may escape judgment and have everlasting life. But this great gift is only for those who accept it and accept Him ❤️

It's notable that Chel is not only portrayed as beautiful, but also as smart and competent. She's not the typical exotic savage woman rescued by the white hero, she has agency and is an equal partner to them, she doesn't want him because she's struck by his heroism or smarts, she knows who he is and she's choosing to jump his bones. It really avoid the worst racist and sexist elements of the "white protagonist with native love interest" trope

at the time, Dreamworks had animated movies that deal with heavy subjects like anxiety (Antz), generational trauma and high family rivalry following tradition ( The Prince of Egipt) and subverting expectations (Shrek). what i love about this movie is that, even when it has the "white savior" trope, the protagonist didn't stayed to be praized for the locals: they literaly turned their back to fame and fortune to save the people of El Dorado. i love this movie.

i like the head-cannon that the gods allowed for Miguel and Tulio to understand the local's language and speak it without noticing because they where aware the Spaniards would come, didn't know how but needed some sort of plan to keep their people safe. had they killed tulio and miguel then more spaniards would come, nothing would be solved or learned. we aren't hearing english, but rather the translational powers of the gods themselves in a desperate plan to save their people with two baffoons and a horse so zecklecon was right, the gods where there, just, they wherent in the bodies of the forieners, he was wrong because the gods where loosing their patience with him maybe? i think that chel. was the main god doing this all along. i also think the armadilo was a god but that's more just because, who wouldn't want to be an armadilo if they had shape shifting god powers?

The story of the man of El Dorado actually has some merit as there was a ritual in people would throw that gold mixture into a lake, where it now STILL rests. Amazing, there were many attempts to take the gold from the bottom of the lake, all in failure. The final attempt was to drain the lake, which only served to dry the dirt and claw at the bottom, basically turning it to concrete and making it impossible to remove the gold. After that, it was made illegal to try to remove the gold. If you want to start believing spiritual beings exist, I'd say research just how many times they tried and how hard they tried to get the gold.

OK, but, can we talk about a few things about how the natives are portrayed? One, the strong implication that the chief was fully aware that the two weren’t gods but was trying to keep Tzekel-Kan from continuing his power play. Two, the fact that Tulio and Miguel are clearly practiced con-men, so they are good at tricking people. It isn’t portrayed as solely a “naive natives” thing, as they similarly tricked Spaniards back home. Three, though this is a bit of a stretch, is the interpretation that the gods that the people of El Dorado believe in are real, and are manipulating events to ultimately protect their city from Cortes and Tzekel-Kan. This is why the two tricksters seem to have incredible luck at various times, and why the volcano thing happened the way it did. In my opinion it’s as good an interpretation as any. Four, there’s Chel, who is clearly cut from the same cloth as Tulio and Miguel in being clever, manipulative and primarily into personal gain. Her, combined with Tzekel-Kan and the invader Cortes, avert the usual trope of the native people being all pure and pliable against the patronising white heroes. No, there are good people, bad people and middling, selfish people represented relatively equally throughout the movie.

As a Mexican when I was young I really adored this movie because I had never seen an American movie that portrayed my ancestors culture in a positive way, even less had I seen a female character with Indigenous features being portrayed as the main love interest and the most attractive in the whole movie. One thing I will say that annoys me is the fact that they’ve blended together Mexica(Aztec) and Mayan cultures into 1. For example Xibalba is a Mayan word and the myth of el dorado is based on the fact that the Spanish thought the Mayans had vast amounts of gold because the Mayans would create tools and build temples made of obsidian which has tiny gold colored veins when the sun shines on it. While the Mexica were the ones who were conquered by Hernan Cortez and had the water channels used for transportation around Tenochtitlán that are shown in the city scenes. It was also the Mexica leader who welcomed Hernan Cortez because he “thought”(which is debatable) that the white men were the physical forms of one of their gods due to a prophecy which foretold the arrival of people from the otherside of the sea.

I think they kept vague where in America they're supposed to be so they didn't have to stick to one single culture. It's not accurate or the most sensitive, but I think it's relatively well done. The indigenous people is portrayed as civilized and peaceful. And they're shown to be people, not just pets or savages. All that is much better that could be expected back then, even now you see much worse.

I haven’t read this anywhere but for me those two guys kinda sound like Gonzalo Guerrero and Jernimo de Aguilar two spanish castaways that landed in the south of mexico. And one of them married a Mayan princess and the other one worked as a translator during the Spanish conquista (it’s said that he also stole lots of gold) and just the entire culture and even designed seems to be closer to the Mayan culture. Even the game they played against the athletes is a Mayan game

This movie is just amazing. They couldn't have executed better than they did. The fact that it's about the sensitive topic of colonization, the 'discovery of the new world' in the eyes of spain (and other european countries) and still manage to pull it off perfectly is extremely impressive. It's carefully thought out. you have 2 aspects, miguel looking for adventure and tulio looking for riches. Yet they still work harmoniously together. Probably because they are 2 sides of a coin, 2 experienced con artists who form a team. The movie might show in the beginning that they think that the natives are naive for believing that they are gods. but it's clear that the chief and Chel notice from the beginning that this is far form the truth. The natives are obviously an extremely impressive nation when you look at how they live from the architecture to the utter peace and friendliness. I don't feel that it's giving of the trope of white man come and manipulate natives. Well it might have been so in the beginning. They sacrafice everything for the people at the end of the movie. Which leaves them with nothing exept for amazing memories of a golden city. Miguel is obviously the tender hearted one of the two while tulio is more realistic. But still both of them decide that giving up their dreams to help save these people is what needs to be done. I like to think that the gods were present maybe not in the bodies of our protaganist but if you look at the vulcano, the boat drifting, the fact that they survived the stone jaguar and even just pulling off the ball game, it is clear that something was a play without anyone noticing. The gods tried to save their people by sending these 2 bafoons, profesionnal con artists who can pull off an eloborate scheme like this one. I feel like the fact that they even are able to communicate with each other shows some kind of magical intervenience. Not only that but he songs are absolutely bangers. the animation just makes it feel extremely magical. Some people argue that it isn't for kids but believe me I loved it as a kid, I love it today and I'll love it in 50 years. It's just a widely accesable movie. And if you think it's too rwanchy for your kids plssss that's just ridiculous. In my eyes that a bit conservative, I turned out fine. I do believe that there should be more movies talking from the perspective of an south american, because there aren't many but that being said I do belive that the reason this movie works so well is because you follow these 2 uncultured criminals who get to show their true colors at the end by deciding to sacrafice themself. This is a masterpiece. Thanks to those who read my ted talk.

most kids here in mexico learn about hernan cortes around age 7, so watching this movie with the historical references and easter eggs is kinda neat (also, we read "the man who would be king" in my high school sophomore year, and bc I watched this one a bit after that it just hit different)
@occam7382
@occam7382 Жыл бұрын
I find their portrayal of Cortes here to be hilarious. In the movie, he's a buff, ultra-pious conquistador set on conquering the New World for the glory of Spain. But in real life, he was a scrawny nobleman's son who ran away from home to get his own slave plantation in Hispaniola and then took a medium-sized high school's worth of criminals and out-of-work veterans (which makes his "My crew were as carefully chosen as the disciples of Christ..." all that more hilarious) on what many assumed to be a one-way suicide missions so he could get himself more gold and more slaves.

This was an AWESOME example of REALLY great voiceover work, phenomenal animation and storytelling AND writing, not to mention the cool history stuff. This was one of my favorites growing up. It reminds me of a time when the END of GREAT films (even animated kids movies) were coming QUICKLY. I may not have seen it then, but I can SEE it NOW. Kinda like the way music was in the late 90's and early 2000's with Grunge, Post Grunge, Post Hardcore, Alternative and so on. When you look at THAT era in hindsight, you can see how it was sorta the END of the "greats" and the "instant classics" "one hit wonders"... NOT to say there's ISN'T good music TODAY, but you'd REALLY have to look HARD for it I feel like. Loved the video, TRULY! Much love from Western Massachusetts USA 🇺🇲 and God bless!

I’m not justifying the inherent evils of colonialsm, but it’s significant to acknowledge that every civilization in history has been predicated off of military conquest, and that “conquering lands for monetary value” isn’t just a microcosm of the white man, but more so a microcosm of history itself.

The Tulio-Miguel conflict wasn’t out of nowhere. They both promised to each other to keep their hands off of Chel and go back to Spain together. Miguel keeps his promise eventhough he learns to love El Dorado and wants to stay there. He sacrifices his new found happiness and wishes for the sake of his friendship and loyalty to Tullio. And the first thing Miguel hears from Tullio after he gets back from his conversation with Chief Tannabok is: „Forget Miguel“, and after that he sees him kissing Chel and breaking their promise. The writing and execution is so subtle that you don’t even notice it but it’s also powerful

I know you called Tulio and Miguel "white guys" cause yea they are lighter skinned than the natives of El Dorado, but I want to make it clear they are Spainiards through and through. Spaniards are lighter skinned than the Hispanics of the Central and South Americas but they are not English white. I know someone gonna confuse the two because people view "white people" as English decendants or North European decendants. Tulio and Miguel aren't "white guys" in the term people view "white people" in the modern era. They are just lighter skinned than the natives of El Dorado but they are Spanish not English. I make this post cause someone at some point will take that you called them "white guys" literal and think they are from England or some shit.

So is nobody going to talk about the thing that the animators wanted to have Tulio and Miguel be a gay couple? I seem to remember a couple of the writers coming forward being like "oh yeah they were hella gay but they won't let us do that shit but we did leave one frame in the movie where we left a frame of their kiss before they pulled away before leaping out from in front of the Jaguar" I GENUINELY BELIEVE THIS TO BE TRUE HOWEVER I WILL ADMIT I DON'T KNOW IF IT WAS CONFIRMED CONFIRMED. Homophobes or naysayers be damned, they have the chemistry at the romantic tension dynamic, I wholeheartedly see them as a little bit more than friends dynamic.
