🇦🇲 The Nagorno-Karabakh region which had been quiet for the last decade recently boiled over again when Azerbaijan mounted an attack which led to it conquering much of the territory it had lost in the previous war. I flew into a bitterly cold Yerevan in early January with the intention of heading down to the capital Stepanakert to see what was happening there since the war. Would I make it or not?

It also reminds me of one time when I drove to Serbia. I was with my cousin. It was just after the war ended. He had a serbian girlfriend, now his wife. We had to wait 2 hours at the border. So far so good... except we are Dutch.. So I was a little nervous. But then my cousin starts freaking out. I smoked weed at the time and he suddenly got the idea that I might have some (forgotten) weed in the car.... he starts searching the car frantically. I assured him there was nothing in the car and I didn't take anything with me. But wasn't quite able to convince him.Luckily I WAS able to convince him to sit back in his chair and stfu! It was a good thing I was driving because if they asked him ANYTHING we would have been fucked! (it would at least have added 1 hour of travel time) And then I drove to Austria another time.. This time I had 10 grams of weed on me and got pulled over at the border. They took my passport inside and told me to park in front of a reflective window. I sat there, opened the window a bit to smoke a cigarette, wink wink notch notch notch and smelled some fresh mountain air.. and had enough time to think about what I was doing. I promised myself there and then to NEVER DO ANYTHING STUPID LIKE THAT ever again. And I didn't. They let me go without a search.

Ending gave me absolute chills. Just 3 lads, probably locals, trying to live peacefully, going off to war because of stupidity caused by politics in the past and quite possibly this might be the last footage of them ever again. In few seconds they shown the destruction, desperation and sadness war can cause. This video was something else. I probably watched the last part on repeat like 10 times. I was speechless when I saw it for the first time.

So much respect for bald, he goes on these little trips all by himself to enjoy the history of the old Soviet provinces, while also acting as a lowkey journalist and showing us the true nature of the people that live in these places and what’s going on in their lives. We forget how large this world really is, this man is going out of his way to document the people and places of small villages that will never be seen. Absolute legend, keep doing what you’re doing man, I love you’re videos.

Most content creators get lazy over time and simply produce content for the sake of content. Mr Bald is a different class of creator. Every video gets us to the real people on the ground and their unedited perspectives on the immediate environment around them. When I was a child, discovery channel actually taught us things and I remember being hooked on the Globe Trekker series. Bald on his own has outdone all of the multimillion dollar stations that have flushed their principles down the toilet. He gets us where we want to be, to learn and be informed about history and current events. The videos get better every time and we have been introduced to a range of characters that would be otherwise unknown to us. I am half-way through his book and would recommend everyone who watches these videos to take time to buy and read it. Who is up for a road trip to Ratus?
