The Woodland Escape

Күн бұрын

This week on the Woodland Escape KZbin channel, join Peter and Cathy as they make significant progress on Kelly Station, a replica of an 18th-century frontier fort. In this episode, they focus on hauling the remaining logs to complete the second floor of the blockhouse.
As they work, Peter discusses a wee bit of the compelling history and mindset of the early European settlers who ventured across the vast ocean to the New World. He explores the reasons that drove countless individuals to leave behind their homes and families in search of a new life. From the desire for more land to the opportunities that arose with the emergence of a new middle class, this video covers the many motivations behind the colonization of America.
The discussion extends to the establishment of early settlements such as Jamestown, Plymouth, Port Royale, and Quebec. Peter talks about the harrowing challenges these settlers faced, including deprivation, starvation, disease, and the constant shadow of death. Despite these adversities, the promise of the New World spurred growth in the Americas, fueled by the availability of food and the lucrative trade of raw goods like furs, wood, and rice back to Europe.
A crucial turn in this narrative addresses the darker aspects of this growth, highlighting how the booming demand for labor led to the introduction of slavery and indentured servitude. As Peter and Cathy piece together the logs for Kelly Station, they reflect on the complexities of this period in history-acknowledging the incredible advancements it brought, but also the profound human cost.
This episode promises not only to showcase the physical building of a historical structure but also to provide a deep dive into the motivations, struggles, and consequences of early American colonization. It's a journey through time, reflecting on the past to understand the present better.
This video is not just a construction diary; it's a homage to the past, a hands-on history lesson, and a testament to the enduring spirit of pioneering. Whether you're a history buff, a woodworking enthusiast, or someone who cherishes the art of building and storytelling, this video offers insights into the challenges of traditional construction methods, the importance of community support, and the lessons history can teach us about resilience and innovation. We're passionate about sharing our adventures and a slice of history with you. Kelly station is going to be beautiful. I love your wee bit of history, my first ancestor came here in 1630 His name was Peter Hayes. He was a captain for the east Indies company, and was picking up Pilgrims from Holland and bringing them to Virginia he bought 400 acres on the pagan river in Virginia. My Stottlemyer ancestor came from Bavaria and worked at seven year indentured servitude in Philadelphia, after his time was up, paying for his boat ride over he came straight down to the Catoctin mountains Camp David, and so the story begins. Thank you Peter and Kathy for your wonderful videos.

From the looks of it I’ll bet your drawl knife was red hot! That’s one huge pile of shavings! That’s the thing, it gives you/us a huge appreciation for all our Ancestors had to endure to survive. Most people today have no idea about the almost impossible tasks they endured which enabled us to have the lives we lead today. You and Kathy do so much to educate this fact and why you’re much appreciated. When I think of a long and perhaps very scary journey for many weeks across the ocean to a strange new land, where it was totally up to your efforts and skill to survive, plus leaving hearth and home, family and friends? What faith and bravery and endurance! Some today can hardly bear a low battery in their phone! Holy Moly! How can they survive, eh? I often think of the strong communities formed in order to survive and how this connection lacks today in many cases. Living in Amish farm country is a Lovely thing because of this community and family unity, working together and sharing. I Love seeing them at a bran raising, driving by and by the second or third day a complete barn is born, post and beam no less! But why am I mentioning this to the Kelly’s? Kind Thanks and Many Blessings! I Love watching your dreams and Loves grow! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania

Life expectancy statistics are fuzzy. One could expect to have 50% of children die, women often died in childbirth, and if you were male and got beyond childhood, you might well live to your 60’s. I have distant males relatives (1700’s) that lived into their 90’s. Your fort project seems a bit overwhelming.

Emperor Peter and his lovely Empress Catherine, were surely 'on a roll' in this vid! Yes, the 'weather' will be a HUGE issue this year. 'Someone' is trying to wake us up from our foul modernity on all fronts...hence the burgeoning attraction to folks of your lifestyles. I thank you for yet another fine vid and filming dear Catherine. Poor Fred will be all mixed up this year as all the rest of creation i.e. timing. You were well to observe and say; "Not Good!" Oh well...we carry on and adapt to all that comes our way...like ants having their lodgings upset by a clumsy or deliberately intentioned 'human' and or foul weather. Due to your 'hate' of modernity Peter, I thought you might enjoy this wee vid on ancient rope-making' = kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5m0gX-Prp2UrK8 Just know this vid will turn the cogs in your inventive mind! As to 'why' people ventured to such new lands...I think Plato has a good idea here..."Human behavior flows from three main sources: desire, emotion and knowledge." Health and Blessings! :)

It must be wonderful to have a lifepartner like Kathy who shares your interests in the past and exploring! While many desperate people left hearth and home to try to their luck in the New World, funding their trip by indenturing themselves, many others were young sons. The younger sons, sometimes with their families, came to the New World to better themselves as well. In Europe, primogeniture severely limited their options. They often had a bit of money, at least enough for the expense passage fare. Some had nothing more, others were backed by fathers or older brothers, just to give them a better chance or as a family hedge against bad times in Europe.

Man, I was going to say you need a mule, or a work horse, then ask if settlers would have had access to work animals like that when starting out, but those logs rolled up slicker' n snot! You must be giddy with happiness with this build coming along so well, and justifiably so. I’m not sure if the indentured servants includes all the people shipped here from places like debtors prisons and the like, so they could build up the work force, but they made up a certain amount. Charles Dickens mentioned that and other issues here quite a bit. The movie 1883 covered some of the reasons and difficulties of early western settlers from Europe, and there was an absolutely lovely reading/slightly left leaning documentary of a book from the original puritans, that used to be on KZbin. Absolutely gripping. Have you seen any of those?

@@TheWoodlandEscape Yeah, especially in Australia, 😀. I was speaking more about the very very poor, whose crime it was to be poor, and unable to pay. From what I read (which admittedly wasn’t a hell of a lot) there were an awful lot of people in prison for that. So much so that they actually had prisons dedicated to people in debt, and they ended up sending very many of them over here. I don’t know if it was an option to get out, or if they were forced.

That’s good to hear. I had heard that even high mountain streams can be dangerous. But I live in Washington state and things could be different. Blessings!

Angled lift-.707 of the weight, as I remember. The co-sign of the angle which I figured to be 45 degrees from my view of it.

There were lots of reasons our ancestors came to America. Many of my ancestors were not po. Most came for other reasons religious freedom, second or lesser son or daughter, monetary reasons and the reasons you stated. My ancestors woh mostly got here in the 16 and 17th centuries. They were well educated for the most part. Methodists did not come about until the late 18th Century. None of my ancestors were indentured servants. I had some on the Mayflower and some on the Caroline and may have had some in the Lost Colony of Roanoke. My wife and I both descend from Norman Knights who had been with William I of England and I descend from the Scottish Royal Houses of Stuart and Duncan. I am First Family of Virginia and Georgia. The tools my ancestors brought with them was brains and a good education.

My first ancestor to the American continent was part of the Jacobite rebellion of 1715. He was part of the group who captured and temporarily occupied Edinburgh castle. The lot of them were eventually captured and marched southward over 200 miles to Liverpool. There they were tried and sent to the colonies. The names of those captured are on a document that is split into two parts... one part lists the names of those "under indentures" and the second part lists those "not indented". My ancestors name is on the "not indented" list.

Teamwork makes the dream work! I am glad you were able to get some help! Remember that when you see the honey do list she gives you in a couple of months. I planted my raised beds Sunday...a few hundred miles south makes a HUGE difference in weather! We do have a freeze warning for tonight but it will probably be the last one until November...maybe December. I hope the wind stays up so it doesn't ruin the plum harvest or my pears!

That would indeed be an undertaking. I haven’t many books, usually just trial and error. I’m sure you could find usefully material, but doubt you’ll find it in one volume. Try a search for small bits at a time. Appreciate your interest.

Great job on the block house. And thanks for the history lesson. We never really knew what it took to come to this country and start fresh. Unbelievable what was required to just survive. Nice that you have help, should take care of that one. You both have more energy than people half your age. Keep your powder dry. Till next time
