You, like me, are not spring chickens anymore. You are building a fort as close as you can in the “old way.”_ I respect you for your effort and HARD labor. So, don,t make excuses for using modern equipment. Like we say at rendezvous, “ if they,d have had it, they would have used it.

It's amazing how much work you've accomplished on the fort. My hat's off to you. Regarding frugality, my maternal grandfather was born in the 1897 and was a civil engineer/land surveyor from the 1920s till his death in the early 1980s. On more than one occasion while working for him as part of a surveyor crew, he'd stop his truck, get out, walk back down the road and return with a bolt or some other piece of hardware that would end up in coffee can in his workshop. He and my grandmother saved everything. Thanks for sharing your progress.

Shall this fort be called Fort Kelly? I tell you Peter, you’re a busy Lad indeed! When you took your coffee break I paused your video and poured a cup to have with you. So Cheers my Friend! Everything looks super and well planned and made with Spirit, blood sweat and tears! I’ve done some metal detecting in the past and found about 15 half pennies, one of which is an Irish half penny like yours but mine is 1769 and in great shape, considering it was in the ground for a long time. Close by here in SE Pennsylvania is the Robert Fulton birthplace. I had permission to metal detect. Didn’t find much but did find an Irish half penny, which is in their collection. Close to the Susquehanna River was the Pothoweiths Tavern, which I probably misspelled, but in the 1760s you could get a meal and stay the night for a half penny. What food and conditions provided who knows? But when finding old coin I often think of the terrible loss it was for someone, perhaps causing great hardships. So a half penny was like losing a meal and nights stay in a motel today, ouch! I’d best stop my buttoning as you may well have placed another log in the time it takes to read this, eh? Thank You So Much Peter and Kathy! Your theme song I find myself humming often! Many Blessings and Hail To The Fort! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania

Construction of the fort in Jamestown, Virginia involved stockade fencing, with alternating ends, going into the ground. For example, the big end of a pole would go in and the following pole, the small and would go in. This presented gaps at the top end it prevented the polls from leaning inward as the fencing progressed.

Hey Peter! In his novel "Fort Robinson", Mr. Roy Chandler describes how four brothers built a pretty sturdy, extensive fortification over a relatively short period of time in Pennsylvania just before the French & Indian War broke out. Given your one man example... he was not exaggerating! WOOF! A redoubt will defend the corner as well as a blockhouse AND still cover the outer walls. The Powder Magazine & Gun Shop will be great additions to Kelly's Station, and I'm looking forward to seeing how they turn out. Is there any chance of having some lean-to's with their backs against the walls? With a flat top, they would also provide a place for Rifle/Musket men to shoot over the walls... not to mention additional shelter for people or supplies when people "Fort Up"! A defensive ditch, abbatis, a Covered Way & chevau-de-frize might be later additions to be considered as well. Currency in the Colonies had to be a nightmare! British, French, Spanish, & American Colonial currencies were ALL circulating around... soooo... anybody who claimed to be an accountant had their job cut out for them! Timothy Dexter was a living example of how NO amount of planning will NEVER replace dumb luck!

But, as a matter of history ( not a suggestion), another common building in outposts / stations / forts was a bakery… an oven to make bread (or hardtack probably). They always seemed to put the bakery in opposite corner of the fort from the powder magazine; don’t know why, but it common. I think Kelly Station will be on the map many many years. Perhaps another wee building at the gate for taking a 'half penny toll' and prospering? You keep saying; half-penny...but from where I sit it looks whole! LOL! Money was hard won for many and barter kept you with what you needed and not so much with pocket change, for what I understand of such times (and I don't understand much!). So I understand the 'frugal' bit...but if accompanied with a generous heart, this strikes a good balance. I remember a saying; "He's so tight...he squeaks when he walks." If you're not squeaking Peter...you're just fine! LOL! Thanks for yet another bit of film sharing and the talents of Empress Catherine. I'll bet you'll be finding Easter eggs, for months to come.LOL! A lot of work for a person working by hisself. I saw a similar gate in the 1790 Survival series. The sentries just lifted it to let James Bender in the fort. I think it was at the fort termed Logan Fort, which is south of current day, Louisville, KY. My oldest daughter teaches history in Louisville. You will note in the survival series that it cost Bender a penny to be ferried over the Ohio River. My wife is from Ohio - Piqua, Miami County, OH. Her daddy ran and owned a toy company.

Another great video. I've got a suggestion for your gunshop even though it's likely a long ways off. Quite a while ago I saw a photo of the Vincent's gun shop. The photo showed one of the Vincents sitting on the stoop of the shop with what looked like a 2 X 4 sticking out from the door jamb at shoulder height for sighting in rifles and such while sitting on the stoop. It struck me as a truly marvelous idea.

Peter you have certainly set yourself a monumental task but we continue to see steady progress each week, hats off to you sir and thanks for being an inspiration to us who only have much smaller projects to build. I am interested in the size of the main gate, will it be possible when completed to enter on horseback or was that not a requirement at the time and location?
@TheWoodlandEscape
@TheWoodlandEscape 5 ай бұрын
Good point and quite observant I might add. A person on horseback will require to duck on entering or leaving, but it is possible.

Another wonderful bit of history! I'm curious, have you ever visited Fort Ligonier in Western Pennsylvania? I live very near there, and that's where my dad introduced me to history, it's also where one of my patriot ancestors settled ( Ligonier Valley) after the Revolutionary War. Anyway, was hoping you had some stories to tell about it! Take care, looking forward to the next videos, God Bless.

Ben Franklin is one fellow I'd like to have met. Out of all the founding fathers he is my favorite. I don't know if it's because of his intelligence, industry, or just because he seems more human to me and more likeable than any of the rest. He sure wasn't perfect and maybe that's why I like him.

Hi old friend. Great fort springing up there. Just on thing on my mind is the palacade wall is going to end up leaning to one side if the poles are not straight. Their thinner at the top and wider at the base. So wondering how you compensate so the poles don’t have large gaps at the top. Hope I’ve not offended you.😊

I believe a fella like Mr. Kelly would have hired help or indentured help at his growing Station. He would have had a steady demand for his blacksmith shop and for his canoe-building enterprise. I cannot think that a single man back in his day would have undertaken this monumental project.

Had a great evening last night SAR, General Adam Stephen chapter Martinsburg West Virginia. We posted the colors last night for the DAR state regional meeting, and had a wonderful time, also finished up on my militia uniform. I found a eyewitness account of the beeline from Micklenburg, which is now Shepherdstown and Winchester to Concord and Lexington, hunting frock, shirt, scoping, knives, and tomahawks. The article said they had buckskins on their legs, I bet you have some knowledge of that it could help me. Thanks again have a good evening @@TheWoodlandEscape
