There is a great theory that Sean Connery's character in this movie is actually an older James Bond and it fits so well that I think the movie gets even better if you see it that way. I actually think the stand off scene in the bathroom is the best scene in the film. Ed Harris is doing all of this because of lost soldiers lives. And now he’s being forced to take more soldiers lives for his cause, which is what makes his “redemption arc” work for me.

As far as the SEAL team leader essentially putting himself and his team in a no win scenario? If he surrendered, now Hummel has more hostages. I also look at it like this. Michael Biehn, the team leader, gave that speech hoping to maybe convince the Marines to change their mind. Also, if him and his men are dead, they can't be leveraged as hostages. Also, if by some MIRACLE they maybe managed to kill Hummel in the ensuing gunfight, maybe the other marines would have stopped with no leadership? Wild conjecture I know but I always saw the scene as a no win scenario. Maybe he knew the marines were going to kill them anyway if they were willing to break their oaths to take a whole entire city hostage.
@KHAOE1
@KHAOE1 Жыл бұрын
I just thought that they took that oath to die defending their country at all costs and so they did. The young one as well. He didn't want to be the one who the brass would probably think "chickened-out" on the fight because he was the only one who came back alive.

Michael Bay's 2nd film sandwiched between Bad Boys (1995) & Armageddon (1998). The first of the Nicolas Cage 90s action trilogy followed by Con Air & Face/Off the year after. One of the many Die Hard scenario movies of the 90s along w/ Speed, Air Force One, Cliffhanger, Broken Arrow, etc... The best thing about this though is that it feels like a crossover between three main characters: Goodspeed, Mason, & Hummel. Each of whom can easily carry their own prequels.

According to the Chilcot report, an allegation in an MI6 report about Iraq’s supposed chemical weapons capability before the 2003 war to remove Saddam Hussein appeared to have been lifted from this film. A section of the inquiry’s findings about the build-up to the conflict in the autumn of 2002 found that MI6, formally known as the Secret Intelligence Service or SIS, feared a source might have taken inspiration from The Rock,. The report details how MI6 sent information to “a small number of very senior readers”, including Tony Blair.

I think the fact the main villain actually had a sympathetic cause was an interesting and smart choice. He wasn't a bloodthirsty killer, just a misguided good man who wanted some justice for the families of the soldiers who served under him. Evil baddies are generally a dime a dozen, and often forgettable. But when you can empathize with the villain, it can deeply enrich a story.

LOL I love how you guys reacted to this phone. Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage work so well off of each other with their sarcasm and action antics. I know how you feel about the shower scene room. Along with the speech before. Speech wasn't meant to hype them up, it was too humble his man because they had an attitude going in like they were badasses that couldn't be touched. They were going after men who had anywhere from fifteen to thirty years more experience than them wanted them to understand not to go in thinking it was going to be easy. Now the speech in the shower room was his ridiculous way of trying to convince them that he had respect for what they were fighting for but you sell your soul to the government basically as a patriot to defend this country no matter what. Yeah I didn't go along with that idea either. There were actually a lot more scenes cut from the them being picked off but this is what ended up with a film focusing on Sean Connery and Nicholas Cage. Still holds up as a classic film

Why was Goodspeed a good driver? Because he was in Gone in 60 seconds. The "Losers always whine about their best" line I have never forgotten that line. Whenever someone says "loser" in a game I think of that line.

Great movie. You should see Sean Connery in The Name Of The Rose (Still as an old man) beside his James Bond movies . Also Nick Cage has some great movies beside Con Air and Face Off. movies like The National Treasures movies (Which are both great), Snake Eyes a great thriller. 8 mm a really dark and powerful movie. The Sorcerer Apprentice a really great fantasy comedy movie.

Another great reaction from you guys! Would you two consider reacting to a couple fantasy/adventure movies from the '80s? I'm not sure if you to have already seen these, but they were my top favorite '80s films during my childhood. First one is the Neverending Story, and the other is the Labyrinth starring David Bowie and he even wrote the music for that film as well, GREAT soundtrack!

I loved the Green Smoke scene because Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 (2009) paid homage to that.

Good movie, but I cannot see past the glaring plot-hole where Connery's character has memorized the difficult timing to get through the unnecessary complex fire-breathing boiler (which apparently still is turned on even though the prison is shut down) to break INTO the jail, when apparently all he had to do to break OUT of the jail all those years ago was to open the door next to it.

I love this movie! I think one of the big nostalgia parts of this movie is that I believe a lot of the music comes from 1 of the old og rainbow 6 games i had on pc or it is very very similar

This is a movie from back in the 90s, so its probably the other way around. Clancy’s stories go well with that Zimmer sound, so it makes total sense. I might check it out because I love this score.

In the morgue, you can see the shift back and forth between them. In the firefight, Stanley cowers and is overwhelmed while Mason is in his element, he's been killing bad guys since he was a pup probably. As soon as the shooting stops and the defusing stars, Mason is somewhat timid in the face of such a colossal agent of destruction, and Stanley is cool and commanding as he is in _his_ element. Stanley owns what seems to be a fairly classic car at the end of the movie, even if it is in rough shape. So I wonder if he wasn't a car guy in his younger days and so knows how to handle himself behind the wheel.

Considered by many as Sean's true last Bond film. The only film of Bay's that I actually like.

Just want to clear up a couple points about Hummel's plan. First off, this WAS his measure of last resort. He had been trying for decades to get these soldiers' families the compensation they deserved, but everyone kept shutting him down. He waited until his wife died to take this action because he couldn't let the blow-back fall on her. Secondly, Hummel's plan was always a bluff. He never had any intention to kill civilians because he was too much a hero. Lastly, all the men Hummel personally recruited for this mission were unquestioningly loyal to him and would have been perfectly fine with it being a bluff. The issue was Rocket Man and Ball Eater, who were recruited second-hand to bolster their numbers. Hummel didn't know them and so he didn't know they were true mercenaries and not patriots. That was the monkey-wrench in the plan that prevented it from ending bloodlessly.
