Keanu's real best friend, River Phoenix, died right before filming was supposed to begin. They graciously pushed back filming so Keanu could mourn. He said that Speed really helped him get out all his emotions... the scene after he is told Harry died becomes so much more realistic after I heard about his real life tragedy.

The lady in the elevator froze up because flight and fight aren't the only responses to extreme stress. There is also freeze, where the fear is so bad it essentially locks up your body and your ability to form reasonable thought. It's kind of like how some animals "play dead" in response to stressors.
@Mambaru
@Mambaru 2 жыл бұрын
Yup that and she must have been thinking that, if the elevator drops further, she'll be cut in half
@akasarahsmom
@akasarahsmom 2 жыл бұрын
Also she was probably aware that there was the very real possibility of the elevator falling while she was getting out, cutting her in two, or cutting her feet off...or whatever. Unless the elevator is secure pulling people out like that is not exactly 'safe'. That knowledge was probably part of the fear that froze her up. LOL.. I know because I've been trapped in an elevator before and even after the emergency people got the doors slightly open they didn't put their hands through and cautioned us not to do it... they did pass a few things through (candy for the children that were in the car) but never a hand or arm, only things.

This has one of the best ensemble casts. The people on the bus could have been cardboard cutouts but they gave them personality and backstory. I cared when that old lady got ran over. I wanted that tourist to get to see LA. I wanted to bus driver to make it to the hospital. That's good writing.

Fun Fact: Joss Whedon re-wrote the script uncredited. According to Graham Yost, who is the credited writer, Whedon wrote most of the dialogue. Also Keanu only agreed to the role after Whedons rewrites, since he thought the original script too closely resembled Die Hard.

One thing is true in this movie. People in high stress situations used dark humour to counter the horrific things they see or have to do as a Policeman or Firefighters. Fear can stun people, just like any other emotion or an event that traumatizes. I appreciated the honest response and different reactions they gave to the characters. Not everyone can handle the same things, and even if they can, it is handled in different ways of response, even if it's the way one person would not respond to the same situation another person would. The lady on the elevator showed this perspective. I really love this movie, saw it in the theater when it came out. The theater was packed. We, the audience, was on the edge of our seats with the suspense. I really miss going to a movie theater and seeing excellent films. Fun fact about the tight right turn at 19:55. City busses are built bottom heavy and one was tested on Mythbusters in this exact scenario. Not only didn’t it tip over, it stayed on all of its wheels throughout the turn with weight distributed evenly across the seats. But in the movie, it does make for an exciting moment to do it the way they did it.

I think they hinted that Harry would die when he while drunk talked about how he’s not gonna be there for Jack all the time. Than Howard mentioned that Harry was the brains of the 2 going back to Harry telling Jack he wouldn’t be around all the time to help him

Mythbusters tried the bus jump a long time ago and it didn't work. Wonder why they didn't have a ramp in the film and shorten it to something like 30ft as that would have been somewhat more believable.

Because they used the actual freeway that was almost complete to film the movie. So they had to make it work. They actually did jump the bus to film it, but it was difficult.

I was 10 when this movie came out. I miss action packed adult movies that kids could still watch and enjoy as well. The 90s were an amazing time for amazing movies and I'm so glad yall are checking out the great ones! If you haven't watched The Net yet I highly recommend it, it's an underrated movie starring Sandra Bullock...also during Christmas yall have to check out While You Were Sleeping with Sandra as well!

1994 is considered to be one of the greatest years in American Cinema. A lot of great movies that year, so many classics. Speed is a great example of that, it's an action classic. Also, it's the year you were born, right? A big hug from Portugal.

We all say what we would do if we were in the situation, but it’s completely different when you are in it. It’s called Fight, Flight, or Freeze. You fight back, you run away, or you are in so much shock or fear that you just can’t move.

Now that you've seen "Speed", please check out Keanu in, "Point Break". Another great 90's action movie. Have a great weekend. Peace out, from the PNW.

In regards to the plane. You can see in the shot before it hits, that it's being pulled by the yellow vehicle. That's what they do with empty planes, kind of like towing but just moving it elsewhere. Plane was empty.

Letting Sam off wasn’t Payne being agreeable; it was him honoring his own perverse rules for his “game”. On the payphone call, he told Jack he couldn’t take any passengers off the bus. He never included a rule about the driver, so Jack’s ingenuity wins that point.

Plus, while it's difficult to spot because it's only on screen for a split second before the explosion, it's labeled "Pacific Courier." The "courier" implies it's a delivery company plane, like FedEx.

Part of the soundtrack of Speed really reminds me of the music from Metal Gear Solid. I've looked it up before and it isn't the same composer, but it has that same feel. One of my favorite action movies ever because it's just so good with little downtime. Edit: Wow, you mentioned it right at the first of the video! lol

One of this film's writers, Graham Yost, went on to make the incredible show Justified. He and the other writer have an incredible DVD commentary for it, taking nothing about the movie seriously, and by the end Yost seems genuinely angry at how little sense his own script makes. "Okay, why? WHY would they not have it turned on the whole time?"
