@clydekimsey750323 күн бұрын
@@jukeboxcowboy sure, but VERY few songs by the rock artists you mentioned sang anything resembling rap. To follow your logic, a few Ringo songs sounded kind of country. Do you want him in the country hall of fame?
@jukeboxcowboy23 күн бұрын
@@clydekimsey7503 🤠 The artists and their art are inseparable. The art is defined by the artist. Criteria for the hall includes the influence and significance of the artists' contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll. Rap artists have done both. To deny that is to deny half a century of the development of rock and roll. Just one example; Aerosmith can thank hip-hop artists not only for revitalizing their career, but also carrying the rock and roll banner. Run DMC did not call themselves The Kings of rap, they called themselves The Kings of Rock. Unfortunately, it is typical for one culture to steal from another, change the name of the music, and then create a little club to exclude the very people who created it. And judging somebody by the way they look or dress? Maybe I'm out of touch, because I thought real rock and roll was about the very opposite of that baloney.
@jukeboxcowboy23 күн бұрын
@@clydekimsey7503🤠 The songs by those artists are proof that rap is part fabric of rock and even predates the terminology. If you want examples of artists who have a more obvious equal ratio, look no further than Linkin Park and Rage Against the Machine.
@jukeboxcowboy23 күн бұрын
@@clydekimsey7503🤠 funny you should mention that, because Ringo is releasing a country album in a few days. In doing that, he is a country music artist. ie, an artist who has made an entire album of country music. Rock was derived from blues, r'n'b, folk and hillbilly music. Of course country was a massive influence on Rock, and for a long time has been part of rocks DNA...with artists such as Lynyrd skynyrd, the Eagles, etc... and Ringo's album is expressing that very thing. Rock and roll breaks boundaries. It is fearless. It didn't end in 1979. The only reason these groups haven't played in the so-called rock arena, is that they are excluded from it. Making geography or heritage the basis of an art form's validity or inclusion is a dangerous notion.

Happy New Year to Michael and all the Tribe! I do agree that the R&R HOF has gotten out of hand. It will take a while to turn over the powers that be to people with more common sense. But at this point, I think the only reasonable solution would be to rename it the Popular Music Hall of Fame, and if we still want there to be a Rock and Roll HOF, start anew. The other option would be to spin off the rock acts from the old HOF, but then there will be the same old arguments over which acts qualify. Ah - A Fantastic Four reference! Nice. BTW - i totally agree with your viewpoint: If it ain't Rock N Roll - it shouldn't be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The problem for the R&R HOF is - Rock is no longer the cultural force it was 30+ years ago. What current day 'Rock' bands could anyone see being inducted 20 years hence? Honestly, i can't think of any. So, the R&R HOF thinks it needs to 'diversify' in order to preserve its brand (and cash flow) into the future. Add to that the whole 'Woke' agenda of demonizing White Men - and you get what we now have. The R&R HOF should have concentrated on inducting all the actual 'Rock' bands and artists that they've snubbed for the past couple decades - because unfortunately, that generation is disappearing. They should have given credit where it's due. Now it's really become nothing but a joke.

As soon as they inducted Madonna, they went astray. After that, anyone could get in. They should change it to "The Popular Music Hall Of Fame". But, I can see why they don't. It's been "The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame" since the mid '80's. It would confuse people, to change the name now. It's easier to accept new inductees who aren't from the rock genre, than to change the name. And I think it's obvious why they're inducting hip-hop, pop and country artists. It's about popularity. They want to seem "new" and "fresh". And to get more eyes focused their way. And, inducting Jay-Z, helps with that.

In my opinion it would be 100% appropriate to call it the "Popular Music Hall of Fame" because Rock and Roll is a very narrow definition anymore, and they already contradict it whenever they want. Also Rock and Roll alone is not as significant a category the further we get from the 50's-70's. Most "Rock and Roll" is pure fusion anyways, and these genres are all interconnected and related: Pop, Rock, R&B, Disco, Reggae, Funk, Soul, Hip Hop etc... even Country Western is a significant influence and enduring style within Rock and Roll, although they got a good Hall of Fame themselves. But that's how it should be, you'll never see a Hip Hop artist in the Country Music Hall of Fame, and so be it. So for me, either keep it STRICTLY rock and roll (which they've already strayed from, and in which case we need a separate pop music hall of fame) or just embrace all popular music styles to be more future proof and far more broad and interesting musically.

Insurance scam man LOL. Well put discussion on all counts. But I see what they're doing. Putting these other genres under the Rock & Roll banner is an attempt to impart to them the same prestige that R & R has. R& R has led music for the last 60 years or so. Other genres, regardless of their own inherent merit (including even rap), can never hope to achieve that. To egalitarians, it is unacceptable to accept differences in rank, so they simp up to everybody. (I would even argue that rock and R & R are different genres. This is based on our use of those words in the 70s.)

The name won’t be changed. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is sexier than Popular Music Hall of Fame. Although I have scant interest in how the RRHOF characterizes rock and roll music, I still find the topic highly worthy of discussion. As others here have pointed out, sometimes it’s hard to know where to draw the line. Country had a huge influence on rock and roll, but it’s not rock and roll. Willie Nelson and George Jones don’t play rock but the Eagles and Poco do. What about the Outlaws, New Riders of the Purple Sage, and the Marshall Tucker Band? Jazz is not rock, but Traffic and Spirit are rock bands. What about Weather Report? The Tymes, the Spinners, the Fifth Dimension, the Stylistics, and the Chi-Lites are all terrific soul groups. Which ones would you include in your own Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

Happy New Year, Michael! The RRHOF is a business and their decisions on which artists to induct will be largely driven by what they think will boost ticket and merchandise sales. This simple fact always has and always will severely limit their credibility, especially among serious fans and students of rock and roll history. I turn to more reliable sources of information - including my own ears - to determine what legitimately qualifies as rock music. Our opinions will differ from time to time, and that’s fine. But I can’t be bothered (much) about what a less-informed CEO with his own non-musical agenda has to say on the subject. On the other hand, if the RRHOF and other groups with their own agendas convince the next generation of casual music fans that hip hop influences can be found in every music style from the last hundred years and that institutions aggressively suppressed those influences until hip hop became too popular to ignore ... well, let’s just say I won’t subscribe to that narrative. The next step would likely be to put asterisks after rockers like Bill Haley, Elvis, and Buddy Holly. Damn it! I said I wasn’t bothered but now I am.

The industry cannot define or redefine a grass roots movement, the whole point of Rock & Roll and every genre of Rock and sub genre it's influenced is that it came from the people not the industry. The Rap phenomenon also came from of the people, but is a completely different branch of the music tree i.e. DJs/MCs, funk, and disco. Rock & Roll is not an umbrella term, it embodies one movement in time; Rap was a new movement completely seperate from, and parallel to Rock & Roll's child genres. This is why Rappers and Rock bands like to work together today, because the juxtaposition is cultural. Considering Rap to be Rock & Roll is like having Hot Dogs or Caviare on a Sunday and calling it a Sunday Roast dinner. It's a Sunday dinner because it's Sunday, but it's not a freaking Sunday Roast.

Is the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame about music or politics ? I hear you Michael 100%. You're not an instigator ! You're a rebel and a trailblazer. We are your tribe.

I would have to make an argument in favor of Willie, he actually influenced rock-n-roll. Rock-n-roll is part country. The Rolling Stones were influenced by him. But Dolly Pardon came after rock-n-roll was already in its full form.

I think there is a lot to look at. The first thing is the Hall is doing that I see being done, or has been done with things like the Grammys, basically eliminated Rock each year. The Rock awards are not even given on the show, also they eliminated a ton of the Rock Categories like, Male, Female and Group and lumped them all together citing that they cannot find "enough" of each to nominate. The elimination of any Rock act being featured on the Super Bowl half time show, hasn't happened in a long time, which really makes this all about RATINGS MONEY. This is it, so the head of the hall to make this about "diversity" is BS because alot of these acts getting in like a Dolly or LL or Jay Z were not exactly complaining about NOT being in there, they were more like "US?". Its really about the ratings and the talk this brings to the show, if next year they announced that Styx, Kansas, and Reo Speedwagon and Rick Springfield were getting in, shoot I'd be ecstatic but thats hardly going to bring "light" to the show and the overall brand that the hall has become now

I think the fact that both Dolly & Jay-Z protested their OWN inductions speaks volumes to corroborate your whole point, Michael. They themselves know full well that they don't belong in a HoF dedicated to rock and roll any more than Michael Jordan belongs in the Hockey HoF. It doesn't make MJ any less of an amazing athlete, it just means that he didn't play hockey! And neither Dolly nor Jay-Z, as successful and accomplished as they are, perform rock and roll music. We know it and they know it, so why do the people in charge continue to induct artists who simply do not belong? Country music has its own HoF, and if hip-hop doesn't yet, I'm sure it will at some point. That's where those artists should be celebrated, not in the Rock HoF. That said, the idea of a Hall of Fame for music in general seems far too arbitrary to me. I'm all for a "Music Museum" type of venue to preserve artifacts from the annals, but that should be the extent of it.

The new DEI,WOKE, say goodbye to Rock and Roll. Country awards is going through it also.Supposed to change types of music to let DEI go to work.There' more money into merging a smaller company into a larger company and the smaller company taking charge,there's your inclusion.

And are there pop artists which do not rock? Dusty Springfield, James Taylor, the Turtles, the Grass Roots, the Association, Three Dog Night, Tommy James and the Shondells, Del Shannon, Jim Croce, Dionne Warwick, Olivia Newton-John, John Denver, Helen Reddy, Cat Stevens, Anne Murray, Bread, the Raspberries, Neil Diamond, Cher, Don McLean, Air Supply, Little River Band, Madonna, Tom Jones, B.J. Thomas, and Lesley Gore. If you’re like me you said “yes” to some, “no” to some, and “I’m not sure” to others. How do you know where to draw the line? Many of these artists were very influential, but they didn’t exactly rock. Or did they? And which music styles do you classify as sub-genres of rock and which don’t make the cut? Doo-wop. Yes. Psychedelia? Sure. Grunge. Okay. Funk? Disco? Power Pop?

I agree with you regarding what you say here Alan! But how do we get to the point of answering your question if we can’t at least agree that Rap & Hip Hop aren’t in the equation?😉👌❤
