Tom, I am from Europe, and I have the Q2U Samson mic that weighs 318 grams. Can I still use this mic with the PSA1+, or will it be too light for it? Also, would the mic be too light for the older PSA1 in case I cannot get the more modern PSA1+ ?

Hello; do you perhaps have a solution to a squeak in one of the joints?
@annoholics2 жыл бұрын
What I am missing is the option to completely conceal the XLR kabel inside the arm of the original PSA1. If you use the mount that requires to drill a hole in your desk then you can run the cable trough the arm under your desk. This looks a lot better then attaching the cable to the outside of the arm with Velcro. The big new base plate might be fitted to existing big holes in your desk but these holes are typical completely at the back of your desk and most likely not at the most optimal place to mount the boom arm. For the best result you really have to dril a hole in your desk and run the XLR cable inside the boom arm.

I'm glad that the only problem with this boom arm is the branding. I understand that it would be a deal breaker for content creators who use webcams (which I'm sure is most of them), but as someone who doesn't do any of that, it is simply a non-issue, so I'll probably end up getting it. I just bought two of the PSA+ arms to replace two cheaper arms I bought before I got the PSA1 and realized how great it was. I haven't set them up yet, but I actually like the way the RODE logo looks. And with a lot of podcasts being livestreamed to KZbin, it makes sense that they would want bold logos on there to help promote their products. To me, the logos are totally fine. If it was a brand I didn't love, I could see that bothering me. But RODE makes probably the best and most interesting accessories and products. There are a lot of great brands out there but RODE consistently impresses me with their solutions to problems.

GREAT REVIEW !!! Very detailed explanation! I personally have the DecTron 20x18" Friction Series (Boom) Arm and it's made here in the USA and ultra durable and can hold up to 5+ lbs. So it can easily handle a heavy camera with a large lens. Not that I need for it to hold that much weight, but this arm is the highest quality, that is nearly indestructible. Works on Friction and holds it's place - No need for the loosening or tightening of knobs, a one time setup is all that is required to dial in the arms weight supporting capabilities. With no springs or rivets to loosen over time, this precision engineered arm will provide years of maintenance free performance. The retail on this is $339, but I was fortunate to get 3 on eBay for $69 each. An amazing deal! Keep in mind you'll need a pretty thick solid wood desk or a very sturdy wall mount (that you can purchase from DecTron for $69). You can get a Heil WM-1, if you can find one for around $29. All in all, I LOVE THIS ARM!, but the RODE PSA1+ comes in a close second. Again, great review.

I purchased the Rode PSA1+ last week as of this comment. I reviewed a lot of boom arms and I settled on the Rode PSA1+ and I'm very happy with my purchase. The quality of materials used are premium in feel and use. I have the Rode Podmic and, no matter what position I put the boom arm in, it stays put and does not drop down like my old boom arm. The option to use the desk grommet is a nice option If you choose to to go that route when setting up PSA1+. Side note I also purchased the RodeProCaster 2 and it has leveled up my podcast. Now to what some think is an eye sore, the Rode logo on both sides of the neoprene covering, it doesn't bother me at all but I think it's extreme to cut off the neoprene just because you don't like the logo. The other thing about the PSA1+ is you can remove the mounting pole so you can route your XLR cable through the top mount for a clean look. That's my two cents for what it's worth. B"H.
@SyntheticFuture2 жыл бұрын
7:47 YES! 100% agreed. Especially that new one is a pretty hefty piece of metal that requires some machining. And aside from that it adds weight to shipping. After making the video, I went back at it with the solvent and was able to completely remove all of the logos. I just used A LOT of solvent on each one and it was pretty easy. I rubbed them off using an alcohol wipe and it probably took about 15 minutes per logo. A paper towel will tear apart and a regular towel or brush can damage the sleeve, so a wipe works best. Now it literally looks like nothing was ever there, it's awesome!

If they made the padding removable, it would definitely be great. Not only because of the branding logo, but also make it easier to clean/wash should it get dirty at some point since it is still some sort of fabric that can get stained. Also, making it easier to remove allows consumers to purchase replacement when it is worn out or even a 3rd party padding(maybe even able to DIY design the padding to including you own logo or design). But I think they are doing that to prevent existing PSA1 users to purchase the new padding to be use on the original PSA1.

Those gigantic logos are the reason I will never buy the MV7 microphone or this new boom arm, despite them being otherwise good products. The branding is just WAY too distracting, offensive and obtrusive. I like my PSA1 and really appreciate your thorough comparisons here.

Great video! I'm late to the party, but I've just picked this up and managed to get a workaround on covering up the white logos that looks so good! I got some high-quality, hi-tac vinyl letters printed in both matt grey and matt black. I've tried both, and honestly, you can't tell they are vinyl stickers. They also stick perfectly to the existing vinyl print as well. I offset the logo by around 0.75mm to ensure there was no white showing from the existing logo, and if you take your time, the results are fantastic! I actually ended up going with the matt black as this was the more subtle look. It's well worth giving this a try if you're not keen on the white logos!

Well what you were always able to do and what I have done with my psa1 was cutting the xlr cable, pass it trough the entire arm (and yes it also would fit through the desk mount because the metal that goes into the desk clamp is hollow) and soulder it together with the connector at the end which results in having a cableless microphone arm which looks amazing and you don’t have to use the just 3 included velcro straps. In my opinion the psa1+ with these sleeves looks worse than the old one but has nice and new features/improvements over the old one especially the actual microphone mount, really annoying with the tightening knobs. Nice and informative video btw, I have watched many of your videos and you kinda talked my into audio technology and especially microphones. Thank for all of that

There is a way to run an XLR cable through the actual "tubes" of the arm (both this and the original PSA1), but you have to cut off the connectors, run the cable, and then re-solder the connector. I've never had the patience to actually do it.

The RODE PSA1 is great and the PSA1+ certainly have welcome improvements...but I have since switched to the Elgato Wave Mic Arm which in my opinion is better overall than either of them (the Elgato is also nicer looking)...although the PSA1 does seem to be more stable when you position it (out of the box)...whereas the Elgato droops a little depending on how high you position...not sure if it's because of the weight of the mic (I use a Shure SM7B) and I'm not sure if the tension of the Elgato can be adjusted...but it's not much of an issue for me and I am too lazy to look up anything on the internets which could potentially eat on my time spent on watching cat videos.

Thanks for the Video. I instead got the Elgato Wave Mic arm, which is - despite the name - not just for Elgato wave mics. It has imho a better fixing clamp, a way better way of cabling, fixed protection and can lift and hold my quite heavy Rode NT USB with spider and pop protection easily. It also has that function that it keeps the mic in the same position no matter if up or down.

Dude, I’m looking to buy a boom arm and it’s between elgato wave boom arm and the psa+. I was wondering if it breaks easily. I bought the nzxt boom arm and it broke because I accidentally pushed it the wrong way. Does the elgato wave break easily because that my only concern.
@_TbT_2 жыл бұрын
@@Uncle-Tomato That Elgato arm is rock stable. I would have no idea how to break it. I like so many things about it: the fixation to the desk is ROCK stable, there is a 10cm piece included which raises the lowest point of the arm up, the cable can very elegantly be hidden behind a plastic cover, no need to work with zip ties or anything. The sides are covered so that it is impossible to get fingers stuck. And it perfectly holds my not-so-light Rode NT-USB with spider. And it included the necessary adaptor for the base. I can really recommend it, after >1 month of use.

Tom, thanks for this very helpful video. I am a podcaster using a Blue Yeti condenser mic on the stand that came with it. I finally decided that it was time to get a professional boom arm as the mic stand was taking up desk space in my tiny home recording studio. I was about to press the buy button on the PSA I when I stopped and thought, "I better go check the reviews and demos on the new PSA I +." After your informative video, I decided to buy the new PSA 1 + . If Rode is listing I am a BIG Rode fan and really like the new Rode PSA I +. But the RODE branding on the new model is distracting to my viewers. Maybe you could leave the branding but make the letters a bit smaller and more muted in color. Say a lighter black or gray. But let me say that I use Rode equipment for my podcast and love the company and people who run it. They make it possible for a gray haired non techie like me to run a whole podcast single-handedly.

Would love to see you review the Joby Wavo Boom Arm. I've seen a number of reviews, but none very in-depth, certainly not the Tom Buck treatment. The one standout in all these reviews is the Joby arm stays put wherever you place, just like the PSA1/1+ and unlike most boom arms I've seen reviewed lately including the Blue. Very solid/stable looking in every video I've seen. The only caveat I've noticed in these reviews is that the swivel has a bit of play in it and when the arms are closed all the way there seems to be a bind, but that's all the way closed which would not be a common position I'd go into or start out of (save for initial use).

It's definitely a personal thing. Some people don't notice and others are bothered by it. For me, the biggest problem is that the Rode logo is a word (not a shape like Apple or Nike). I can't help but read and re-read a word any time it's on screen. 😬

Am I the only one who uses the drill-in bit and who cut and re-soldered his XLR-cable to route it through the inside of the metal bars of the PSA1 (and the drill-in bit of the desk)? I thought that’s how you are supposed to use them, when you mount them on a permanent position? Nice video, definitely thinking about getting the PSA1+ when I should need another one in the future. And I will definitely get a sticker or another wrap for the arm, since I’m not really fond of the giant logo. (But I understand being proud of your stuff, so I get why it is there.)
