Best video, I came online because I just started my own label and I'm and up and coming DJ/Producer. I didn't wanted to spend money on a PR and decided to it myself, since I have more time than money. Thank you

Jay Adelson is providing needed info, in this clip, for many. This information helps those that are independents of many industries. This also helps people reexamine the use of PR resource at the proper time in their business cycle. I likkie:)

Jay, Your position on not hiring a PR professional may have some merit if the startup is small and local, but for companies looking to establish a national or online brand reputation, or attempting to influence sophisticated target audiences, a Do-It-Yourself PR approach can incur long-term damage with customers, prospects and the media. First impressions are lasting impressions.

Nice one. You're absolutely right pal the both of you. I reach my target audience and they are all rich wealthy people. I am now known by the rich society around the world. U have to have GOD. If not you'll fail

Jay, Public Relations isn´t just getting media coverage, it also deals with other forms of publicity... even the other ones you mention in the video - like social media. A good PR consultancy will advice you the better way to make you company successful in terms of Reputation - not just visibility - and will develop a plant that fits your company needs...

Thank you - What metrics do you use to evaluate the performance of the hired PR company? hwo long is a fair evaluation time? What are the metrics indicators ?
@askjayadelson2 жыл бұрын
The KPIs for a PR company could be brand recall on a test market, conversions, or percentage of trade press coverage, depending on your goals. I think that a PR company can often be a marketing agency of sorts for your early businesses, but more mature businesses are probably going to measure more based on modern metrics like follows, likes, conversions, installs, retweets, etc. There are a lot of factors to this, but it comes down to the goals.

Great video, I would say what's more important than coverage is engagement and brand loyalty and you need research and a good strategy to do that.

Hi Jay, my name is Debora. I am working as an intern in a business consultant company, in Digital Marketing department. I 'm majoring PR in my university and here now i was asked to start the PR in the company. From the really beginning. I confuse on what to do first. I mean, first, of course I need to do some research first (abt the situation, the company, and the audience). But, after that, what action should i do? the first one? should i contact media? or should i make a press release? (besides social media, bcs we already use it from the begining). Hope you understand my problem and could answer it. Thank you

I don't completely agree with not investing in PR as a startup. Although, there shouldn't be a huge allocation of time and funds into PR to start, a good PR firm could offer a consultation as to how you should position yourself, your messaging and who you should be communicating with (and how) as you roll out your business.

very informative. I do agree with having something set in stone before using a pr agent. I disagree with not using a PR maybe not in the early stages, to find your soul and see what social media they can use, but when your not having much info getting our there, and need someone to spin it then i would use a PR guy/Rep. Still a cool channel.

I don't agree with not investing in PR for start-ups, because it can cost three times more for crisis management to clean up (any) damage. Therefore I believe in taking baby steps so I started a (start program) However Jay I love your work and hope one day we can work together on a project. Ms. Lawrence (Senior Publicist @ADVYBEPR)

I get frustrated with business leaders who don't even know what the difference between public relations and publicity is. The author of this video can clearly identify the difference between a marketing professional and an advertising professional, but not the difference between PR and publicity. Publicist manage getting press coverage as their primary function). PR people are ESSENTIAL to startups because they set the voice an tone of an organization's vision, brand and messaging, set the foundation of its ethics. PR people actually get businesses in the space of businesses/consumers who want/need their service and also help them interact with various audiences.So your video is wrong and needs significant editing. You lost me at about 2 minutes into the video when you misappropriately categorized what PR people do professionally and how they help startups. Its a disgrace.

So if I understand Jay correctly, PR is like a fire extinguisher. It has no role unless there is a fire to put out.
@askjayadelson2 жыл бұрын
PR can certainly extinguish fires. However, PR can also create fires, and even drive adoption of a brand, conversions, and market penetration. It can make your competition look like idiots. PR is essentially ANY intentional activity designed to communicate an idea for a company.

As I agree with ladymagyver01, The Nuno makes a good point about reputation being as important if not more than visibility. Reputation is much more stable than visibility. People tend to forget the glitz and the glamour, but when you've locked them into a sturdy reputation, that will last!!
@MarkTII10 жыл бұрын
Is this for real? You want an untrained and uneducated person to manage social media for a business (even if it's the business owner him/herself). You then go on to ask an entrepreneur to position his/her company and state that the positioning will last for a long time. It's a PR person's job to deal with positioning and the best ways to do it. Not an investor. Not a friend. Not a fellow entrepreneur. Sure, I'm passionate about my career. Perhaps I'm "in my own feelings" as they say, but the fact is, you're spreading incorrect information about public relations and contradicting yourself at the same time. You say social media, image, and reputation management are important for start ups, but clearly you cast out the person who does those things best, and that's a PR person. You don't ask the salesperson to engineer a product or the operations manager to handle finance. We all can add numbers and subtract them but there are people who take that to the next level (i.e. financial advisors, accountants, economists,and etc). Spreading the idea that anyone who knows little to nothing about PR and communication can write press releases and manage social media or even a messaging is VERY BAD business advice. While I know you intend to help people focus and execute appropriately, this isn't the way to do it. I also notice you keep saying "hire an agency" as if there aren't sole public relations practitioners who can help out a startup business or even boutique PR firms that don't charge as large of a fee to do the things needed in the infancy stages of business development.

+Mark T II I AGREE WITH YOU 100%%%%%%!!! A professional is expensive but an amateur can cost a company a fortune. Honestly, the right positioning agent can help a company from day 1. Its the worst to have to clean up an amateur's mess. :( The advice in this video is NOT good and out dated. PR is not just media relations and coverage. It's positioning. Coverage can be bad timing? Please have a positioning agent give you some real advice BEFORE you make videos like this. :( Advice like this is why CEOs do PR wrong.
