It is subjective, but size really matters and watches can hardly be "too small" but they can easily get "too large". If Tudor makes a Ranger in 36-37mm it would sell like crazy.

I don't think that Tudor nailed the recent iteration of the Ranger. And I think it's lack of mass appeal speaks to that. I believe it will be 38-39mm when it appears again (and I both hope and think it will appear this year). I say this for two reasons: Firstly, I do agree with your comment, but also think believe that many feel like the Wilsdorf Foundation have sized buyers out with the 36mm Explorer, and have a noticeable gap across both brands in their field/GADA watch offerings at the very size that many still regard as the 'goldilocks' diameter. Secondly; the BB58 is tiring due to both saturation and it's oft toted 'near perfection'. As we often see, genre defining pieces of design can tire quickly and fall victim to their mass appeal. Tudor giving the BB treatment to the Ranger (Black Gilt dial, 39mm, a splash of red...) achieves both (possible) objectives imho.

it depends on your wrist size, I am over 7 inches, and a 36 Inch watch just looks like a child‘s watch on my arm. I own the Heritage Ranger ( I wear it as I write this), and it fits me perfectly, like a 36 to 38 would on the Guy in the Video….

I’d suggest the Black Bay 36 instead. This Ranger needs to be 36mm. The BB36 is a great mix between the OP and the Explorer. It has the chunky case that makes the 36mm feel like 38mm like you’d want and also costs about the same as the Ranger but I think it’s better quality.

I have Daytonas, Subs, Datejusts you name it, but when I can't decide what to wear, I always gravitate towards the Tudor Heritage Ranger. Sometimes I just don't wear anything else for weeks on end and just have this watch on almost 24 hours of the day. Such a beautiful watch and wears super nice on my 6.5" wrists. My only critique would be if it was a 37-39mm (like the newer Ranger) and if there was a curved integrated bracelet but this is a Nato monster. Looks good on virtually any Nato strap in existence haha.

Nice to see someone giving kudos to the Tudor Ranger. I 've had mine since 2019 when I was looking to buy an Omega. When I saw the Ranger, I was hooked. I put the watch on and it's been my everyday watch since. It keeps good time and the waterproofness is great. The metal band is solid and the brushed look is rugged. It can be worn with anything during any occasion. Again, great review!!!!

When I was looking at getting my first expensive watch (for my budget) I wanted the Ranger so bad, but I felt it was just a tad large. Then I fell in love with the BB36 and been in love since. I have had a Tudor Ranger in my collection for around 5 years now. I tried it on along with an Explorer (when the cases at ADs actually had Rolex watches for sale lol). I preferred the size, the dull brushed finish, and the 150m water resistance of the Ranger. It had more of a rigged tool watch vibe for me. I still really enjoy my Ranger, especially on a NATO (I've never been a fan of the straight end links). Added bonus for me is that it was never plastered all over social media, and I rarely see another one when I'm out and about. I try to avoid the hype and buy watches I enjoy. I feel a lot more people would enjoy the Ranger if they gave it a try and formulated their own opinions.

I think 36mm is the size you want for an Explorer 1, the proportions of the now discontinued 39mm were off. I also honestly think there is no alternative...you're always going to be disappointed if the Explorer is the watch that you really want. The Tudor is a nice homage watch though.

Tudor should release this watch again. Agreed, 37 or 38mm would be ideal, and the price point is bang on. I would buy one. But, there’s stiff competition out there, and dare I say it, a new homage from Steinhart that mirrors the previous Explorer 39mm dimensions, but at less than a 10th or even 20th of the price. It’s very tempting!
@HaonProductions2 жыл бұрын
I figured Tudor's best bet would be a new 39mm Ranger with an in-house movement. It would slot in perfectly between the BB36 and 41, but maybe it would step on the toes of the BB58? This is all moot for me though, since my ideal is the OG 34mm Oyster Case Ranger that wore like a 36! Wish I'd gotten one of those when they were still like 1k.

I have to chime in for the "had to use my credit card and spend a year paying off my Rolex/ Retired Military" crowd: For this section of your collection, also look at the Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic. It has most of the features of this Tudor, and I think I paid around $800 for it. Don't quote me on the price, but it was definitely south of a grand. It has the size, the 12, 6 and 9 arabics, the "crossover" looks between formal and sporty, non merceded hands... The downside: They toned down the beatrate in order to give it 80 hours power reserve. It clocks at 21 and not 28. BUT, if you are not worried about anyone seeing your "Rolex" stamp, then you are certainly not concerned with anyone putting their face in your watch to see if it ticks 6 or 8 times per second. Listen, if you are wealthy, God Bless ya. Even better of you earned it yourself. In either case, fill your collection with Rolex, AP, Omega and the rest. On the other hand, if you are a regular collector, like me...I suggest going into debt ONCE, and only ONCE to buy your one grail watch. Enjoy that one watch, as owning it releases you to be able to look at ALL the price levels, as there is no extra pride in hitting the Rolex well twice. Once that is out of the way, you will be amazed at what is out there on the market. I absolutely LOVE my Hamiltons!

Thanks for making the video. I love my Tudor Ranger and always make a point explaining that it’s 41mm size is just perfect for its purpose. The Heritage Ranger is a real tool watch… function over form, and that ETA movement is cheap to service as well as easy to repair. Once you use the watch in your daily activities, you will quickly notice that it fulfills its role as field watch very effectively. In the gloom, its visibility is amazing. I love the Rolex, but could never afford it, nor would I wear it where the Ranger goes. The Heritage Ranger was a God-send… the more it gets scuffed, the more I adore it. P.S. I wish I bought the North Flag also when I had the opportunity. That one I would baby. 😊

3:59 The metal bracelet is poorly integrated with the watch head. Lack of a full end-link (as found on the Rolex) places more stress on the push pins. I guess Tudor wants to maintain flexibility of easily switching out to a Nato/leather strap (or vicxe versa).

Another good video. I agree an updated version of the Ranger would be quite awesome. For me, the dial, handset and case would be determine whether or not I'd buy one. I prefer something more classic that hewed closer to the original design. Obviously an updated movement. And, of course, a generous amount of lume. If it is intended to be a field watch, then lume would be important in low light situations. It would be ideal for camping, hiking or anything outdoors. And yes, desk-diving, too.

I Have a few problems with the Ranger as an Explorer substitute. It's no longer available new (at least not easily) and many people don't want to go the second-hand route. 41mm can't substitute for 36mm or even 39 IMO. Subjectively I don't care for the hour hand (or the snowflake hour hand on other Tudors for that matter) and the 12 on the dial throws off the balance. YMMV

I had this and loved it, but the ETA crapped out on me after a few months with huge time loss and the ETA rotor spin while hand winding issue. The dial also was too fat, would have been perfect at 39mm or increasing the bezel/lug thickness.

I'd forgotten about the Ranger. I tried one on at a local jewellers quite a few years ago, it was on the bund strap, and was 75% there for buying it but the size was the issue for me and I passed on it. Yes, the 41 mm Ranger has real street cred and is indeed a more faithful successor to the 1016 than the modern Rolex Explorer. But, for half the price you paid, I would still go for the Sinn 556a, with its slightly more compact dimensions and better looking hands, IMO.

You should do an updated comparison with either the newer 39mm Ranger and the 39mm Explorer, or the updated Ranger with the current 36 or 40 Explorer. Hi Max, thank yoou for bringing this Tudor to my attention. Before that video did not even know that model existed. Fully agree with your take that the line should be revived with an inhouse movement and at a size of probably 39mm. If it was for me, adding a date complication would be nice (even if it was/is not part of the Explorer/Ranger DNA) and having solid end links that touch the case. Greetings from Germany!
@robdickson59022 жыл бұрын
The Heritage Ranger is a great watch. The only time it feels big is after switching from a much smaller watch, but I find that subsidies quickly. There is quite a bit of blank space on the dial, but I prefer it to the 39mm Explorer 214270 which I had and then sold. If Thdor came out with a new Ranger at around 38 to 39mm, that would probably make it appealing to a wide audience. Nice midway between the Heritage Ranger at 41mm and the Vintage Ranger at 34mm.

I think 41mm probably made more sense when it was launched. I would love to see one in person. 41mm is definitely more sporty, and I could most certainly wear that. My main complaint was the open end links on the bracelet version. It'd love to see this re-launched at 39mm with closed end links, and a 2nd strap (single pass NATO or leather) in the box, with that new movement/COSC certification. I agree that the 36mm is just too small for a lot of people. A unique size would help it gain its own identity more, rather than just an OP with 3/6/9 on the dial. I tried on a 39mm Explorer not long ago, and it fit so beautifully on my wrist that I was even more disappointed it had been discontinued. Although the $9.8K price on it was reasonable for the market, vs. the list and what they had been going for a before discontinuation means I have no interest in paying that. It's a nice watch, but not THAT nice, as much as I love the design. Tudor's teaser about exploring your world in leading up to W&W 2022 has me hopeful, but it could also be a new GMT variant.

Hiya Max. Great topic. Two great watches. I have what feels like a long relationship with both pieces despite never owning either so apologies if this comment is long. I’m more a Tudor guy than Rolex - that's more a personality trait than a brand loyalty thing. But despite my 7.75” wrist, I find the Ranger too big. I prefer to get wrist presence via length (i.e. the 37mm Longines Spirit). So I thought I'd try a 39mm 214270 Explorer, however I couldn't get one on wrist for the life of me! The local Rolex AD's don't know me from a bar of soap, even if they did?, no stock. Brick and Mortar dealers/re-sellers?, no stock and wait lists. And no one I know owns one... Then covid hit. So I bought a 'copy' from Tisell. Except for the crown it's essentially a facsimile of the Rolex and the *second* I got that on wrist I *knew* the 214270 was *the* watch, so I got myself on the list. I even called in a few favours so they knew I was legit. And it was going to happen (I think!), may've taken 6 months or more, but I would've got one. Then it was discontinued, the grey market went bananas and here I am a few years down the track. There's no way I'd pay over retail, the 36mm is too small for my taste and I'm not sure I'd be able to get one in todays market; so my dailies are (1) a Champagne Alpinist (SPB123J) on a jubie bracelet (2) a Lorier Hyperion & (3) a brushed silver/rose gold quartz PRX and I'm re-considering this 'luxury' watch business. I continue looking for a left field alternative, like the Eberhard & Co Scafograf 100 or the '57 re-issue Omega Railmaster, the various Loginges Heritage options (the Spirit, the Silver Arrow etc.) and *hoping* that Tudor release a 39mm Ranger with a gilt dial (the daily/field watch equivalent of the BB58). Yet I can't be sure if my motives are 'pure'? Do I simply want a watch with a 'luxury' brand on the dial because my current dailies are (really good watches granted, but) humble timepieces without any real flex? Maybe the fact that I'm asking the question is answer enough? Again Max. Great topic for discussion.

So is this being updated for the new 39mm Ranger?

Yes, I'm on the list!

A new ranger at 38-39mm with 20mm lug width and a bracelet that fits the watch would be cool to see. They better not add faux rivets. I tried this ranger on a few years ago and thought it was too big at 41/22.

I have. Tudor Heritage Ranger on braclet. I love it. I've had it about 5 years. I originally wanted an Explorer at the time I couldn't afford $6500. Not sure I evan want one anymore. Thinking about more Tudor's BB chrono panda or a pepsi GMT.

Another great video brother! Keeping up with that #tudorbros mentality, I love it 👏

Haha yeah it's been a bit heavy on tudor recently, thanks Miguel 😁

The Ranger is also a poor value. I have an Omega and a Rolex, which fortunately I bought years ago. At current prices and required AD ass kissing, no way. I put my Steinhart Adventure on and count my blessing that I am not so status driven that I throw my money away.

I was actually thinking about the Black Bay 36 as a viable alternative to the Explorer. I was indifferent to the ranger until this vid. Would still get the BB36 though.

The Ranger and North Flag are the two best contemporary Tudor designs - as the don't mimic Rolexes.

Nice video mate! I own one, and the construction of the watch feels superb like a handcrafted watch in comparison with the BB. Love it, pics don’t do it justice, in person is a superb watch! In the first I was concerned about the size but it wears smaller! Definitely an undervalued Tudor!

Bought the Tudor in 2015 but quickly realized it didn’t suit my taste. The open lugs are terrible and the size is way too big. Finally sold it and got myself a 114270. Never looked back. For me the Rolex explorer in 36mm is pure perfection. Apart from the bracelet and clasp of course ;-)

Hi Max, Ive been a subscriber to your channel for several months and I must say I like your content AND your perspective on watches in general. I have to say that the watch in this category that scratched the itch for me was the Nomos Club Campus w/ Black (Charcoal) dial 38.5 mm x 8mm x20mm inlet. @ only $1500+- WIN-Win

Thanks Ramsay! Yes I love the club, but those lugs are so long 😅

Who on the planet can hate Rolex. Rolex is the pioneer of luxury watches. There is no luxury watches without Rolex. They are the top tier of class.

Great video! That being said I REALLY dislike the Tudor ranger. Being a bb36 owner and really liking it, Ranger just looks bad. The non-fitted bracelet that has that awful gap. The shape of the hour marker. Agh.
@reverb5082 жыл бұрын
I'm just not a fan of the Ranger's aesthetics. The Explorer has just enough going on with the dial to make it look like a fancy watch, whereas the Ranger with its painted numerals and austere dial make it look like an IKEA wall clock. I'd love to see Tudor update the non-diver Black Bay 36 with a 3,6,9 dial like we see on some of their bronze watches. That would be a killer Explorer alternative.

"Less trenchy" Now that's a new phrase🙌 So how about a new North Flag? We are living in an integrated bracelet world no matter how much we stamp our feet.

Yes, combine the best of the Ranger+north flag would be awesome 👍

Oh Ranger vs Explorer it means something big for the Ranger haha. Also talking about the actual retail Explorer prices 😰 So big points for the Ranger

Let me summarize. Its too f-ing big. Shame on Tudor for screwing up the appropriate dimensions to make this watch more desirable. Pretty clear that Tudor didn't want to encroach on the coveted space of parent company Rolex detracting from the iconic Explorer. Buy an Explorer or a clone and not this Tudor aka Invicta wannabee.

The Explorer is a cool watch, but way to small for me and my 8" wrist. My 40mm No Date Sub fits quite nice and I'd be all over an Expl in the 40-41mm range.
