I bought the ranger and love it. It feels better on wrist than in photos. Anyway, it's okay that many people hate it and dislike this model and express numerous negative thoughts. It just make me realize that I really bought it solely becos "I like it" but not becos "others like it".

Ordered my Ranger yesterday. This is a sleeper that will only appeal to those who really want simplicity and durability. I'd guess most will think it's too simple, boring, whatever aesthetically, but to me it's perfect and exactly what I want in a high-quality field watch. You have to see it in the flesh to appreciate it, the dial has some great texturing. Will keep it forever, and hope to get many battle scars on it throughout the years :) Thanks for the great vid!

My kind of watch. To complain it's boring is to completely miss the point IMHO. Let this Tudor be the kind of watch Rolex doesn't even make anymore. A simple, functional field watch that is about clarity of form and simplicity of function. It's superb.

The design of this model was just what I was looking for in my next watch. The clean unassuming face with a brushed steel case/bracelet and solid build quality that doesn't attract attention. This fits my style of a luxury daily driver like a Toyota Land Cruiser, well done Tudor.

This was my first watch. I graduated about a year ago and got a great job so I’d been out on the prowl for months and when the Ranger got released I emailed the AD straight away. I was lucky enough to get the first one in my city. I love it so much and every time I look at it I just feel proud. I actually like it’s simplicity and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I just bought one last week. It was our families first time on a cruise and I was also celebrating my 10 year anniversary of starting my own business. I could not possibly be any happier. It’s my first Tudor. I own several Omegas, a couple of Oris watches, some Hamilton’s (new and vintage), I also have some micro brands I learned about from your videos Ocean Crawler, Traska and Vaer. I am super impressed and in Love with the Ranger.

I loved this watch from the moment I first saw a picture of it. I went into a shop and tried it on a couple of months or so and immediately made the decision to reserve one. I picked up today (after it arrived a about a week ago) and I absolutely love it. I own a Rolex Datejust in steel and white gold that I got new in 1985, plus I bought a new Panerai Radiomir Black Seal in 2008. This Tudor Ranger is right up there with those two watches. All of the negative comments about “too boring”, “ not eye catching” is exactly what I like about it. Its classic and simple styling make it a tour de force. Less is more.

One thing that is often overlooked with the dial design is that it really closely matches the aesthetic of state and national park ranger uniforms, at least the ones here in the US. It’s not a sexy uniform but is highly functional and distinct. Kind of like hiking pants lol

Love this new Ranger! I didn't like the outgoing one at all, so this is a big improvement, especially with the in-house movement! I would say that this model is best described as a "Black Bay-ized" Ranger. Which I think is a logical move, since the Black Bay is so popular. This approach works well for the Ranger, and gives it continuity with Tudor's other sport models. While it lacks a little of the original Ranger's charm and gracefulness, it does make the new Ranger more sporty and solidifies it as a modern Tool Watch. The small, original case being lifted from the Prince, which was of course more of a dress model and didn't quite work for it's purpose as a robust sports watch. Also, the new look further differentiates it from the traditional Oyster styling of current Rolex models. All these new models have done the seemingly impossible task of giving the modern Tudor brand its own separate look while still retaining some of its Rolex design cues. The only puzzling thing about the new Ranger is why there is no dial reference to its seemingly Chronometer movement. Do we know its COSC for sure?

I think it looks much better in person. I have been able to checkout all three options. The bracelet and clasp are amazing, especially for the price point. If I was looking for a watch that could go anywhere and do anything I think the bracelet is the best, but for someone looking for a tool watch they will wear hiking or casually I think their nato strap looks the best. It adds some color, helps the bit of red on the seconds hand pop and really gives it a rugged field ready esthetic. The black rubber strap also looks great, and is very comfortable. If I wanted versatility, but lived somewhere hot, or wanted to keep it under 3k the rubber strap is perfect.

I think a lot of people don't "get" the watch, so they criticize it because they are trying to make it something it isn't. It's intended to be a classic tool field watch, made with modern technology. The Ranger is not trying to be a BB, or a modern Old Ladies Broach (Explorer). If that's the look you want, buy a BB36, or get on the waiting list for an Old Ladies Broach.

Great review. I own the new Tudor and opted for the hybrid rubber strap. It simply looks great and wears amazingly well. The key for me was getting over the 39mm case, as I found my BB58 Navy Blue a little on the small size. The larger dial on the Ranger ticks those boxes. The T-Fit clasp like on my other BB58 Boutique Bronze is just fantastic and affords you the ability to adjust on the fly as temperatures affect your wearability. I like the printed numerals and one dimensional look on the hybrid rubber, it just works so well. The price is great considering you're getting pedigree in the MT COSC certified engine. The sapphire domed crystal also makes it all pull together. Fabulous review as always

I have a number of watches including Rolex seadweller, dateless sub and a couple of others and bought this. Didn’t go looking for it but the finish and in house movement took my eye and I was impressed though the scarcity of any Rolex but mainly the sports ones means it was a great piece for fair money. Delighted with the watch I can see why some may say it has a boring face but I like the no fuss, good size face add to its history (though I agree tentative). Great functional no frills look suits what I want. Delighted and just thought I would share

The Ranger has a great movement, case, bracelet and build quality. I have issues with the dial, which looks too plain for the price. This is due to a combination of factors: too much negative space, a boring font, printed indices and an odd lume color. I own a BB58, which is my favorite watch in my collection. I personally wouldn't sell this watch as a "beginners" luxury watch. A "beginner" wants a deal of bling for their hard earned $3000. This is definitely not that! This is a specialist watch for those that want very comfortable wear, incredibly clear time, and a take every wear ability without being scared of theft or the odd scratch. The chamfering on the side and bubble sapphire lend a jewellery feel that's surprising. A top travellers watch, very well balanced, accurate movement, very comfortable, thin, small lug to lug and one that just gets worn an awful lot against the heavier, blingier and much more expensive pieces in my collection.

I really like this watch and I am speaking as someone who doesn't usually care for Tudor/ Rolex watches in general. The dial is simple and practical. The sizing is perfect. The bracelet and strap options are good. The in house 4hz movement is great. If I had a gripe at all I would like raised/applied numerals but that is a decent trade-off for the price overall. This is a Tudor I would actually buy.

Great perspective, Teddy (as usual). I tried one of these at my local AD and it fit well. Love the “former” Explorer vibe. The printed face is nice (see: vintage Explorers that everyone seems to love) - whereas the new Explorer seems a bit too flashy for a tool watch. Bottom Line: I’ll stick with my 41mm Heritage Ranger. The main complaint seems to be the printed script versus applied markers. But here’s the thing…the old rolex explorer 1016, which sells for over 20k sometimes, also has a printed script. Some people also complain about this the rangers price point, but all things considered like the movement, bracelet and sapphire crystal, its actually a very reasonable bang for your buck. I personal want one but for 10-15% under retail if possible. Lol

This is the correct take. I would absolutely love a 1016, but I can’t afford one (and frankly don’t think it’s worth what it sells for even if I had the money). So I could either get a homage, which doesn’t sit all that well with me, or buy this which is still a sort of heritage product that is really reminiscent of the 1016 Explorer without being a direct copy.

@@ProfessorPesca Yeah I just think the white space, so to speak, or rather the the black space on the dial, in combination with luminous printed script, and considering the dial is grained matte, is exactly why people like this watch. It’s just clean and simple. And I think a lot of people don’t understand just how good the movement is. KIF anti-shock systems that replace the standard incabloc typically used in ETA movements. Tudor makes very touch and durable watches. I haven’t bought the ranger yet, but I did put a deposit down on one. Now I am somewhat contemplating between the ranger and the bb 59 39mm, which is also a classic.

I picked up a ranger last week, I find it extremely comfortable, it really does wear large, but that is not a problem for me. The bracelet is amazing. I sold a 20-year-old sub with no date and put the money into a Pro and the Ranger and still have £1500 left! I now have 4 Tudors in the collection, ok I still have 8 Rolex watches but I am starting to ask myself why.

Many have complained about the simplicity of the word Ranger and greenish lume. Many may not realized that the original vintage Ranger uses only “Ranger” and also uses greenish lume. This watch is a reflection of the original vintage Ranger just like the BB58 and BB54 uses the DNA of Tudor Submariner 1958 and 1954.

I feel ironically that this is less the 2nd choice or "poor mans" Exp39 than say the Black Bays are to the Sub. I have an Exp39 and it's a great one. Although, the sharpness in appearance due to the polished bezel and raised/applied indices gives it an OP meets a Datejust level of dressiness. This Tuder is bones cool. Has a Panerai Base toolishness to it. For me anyway. I'd buy it.

At exactly the same price point as the BB36 you get the T-fit and in house mvt with 72 power reserve.

Yup. I think that’s good value. If the BB36 gets the t-fit and movement like the S&G did, look out Explorer.

I love how polarising this watch is, as a fan of tool watches I think this is great, the flatness of the dial makes it highly legible at a glance like many of my pilot watches. The fully brushed case means I don't have to baby it when I'm wearing it. I think this might be the biggest issue with the watch is that it's a Tudor and therefore people are looking at it as a luxury watch... like people who don't dive criticising the details of a dive watch the criticism that this is too plain kind of misses the point of the watch when you're outdoors carrying a load of equipment. I've never liked the BB58 or 36 and up until the FXD (also controversial) I didn't understand the hype about Tudor... but together with the BB Pro and now this I really think Tudor are filling the gap of when Rolex used to make tool watches rather than insane luxury pieces that you would never wear for their intended use. The only thing for me is the colour of the lume on the hands and dial are slightly different but otherwise I'm a big fan of this watch.

I'm always amused by people complaining about how "boring" a field watch is. If you bling it up, it stops being a field watch. Maybe people just expect more of a $3,000 watch, but the problem, I think, is in the very concept of a $3,000 field watch. I do think it's a good price for that movement; my only complaint would be that the giant numerals are cartoonishly large on a dial of this size. I'd be interested in a smaller variant, preferably on that black strap (which looks awesome.)
@mitchaelhollingsworth1698
@mitchaelhollingsworth1698 2 жыл бұрын
i think the trouble is that 3000 dollars is entry level luxury watch level. and a field watch is not meant to be that, it's meant to be a mil spec watch that you can take through a war zone. there are some tool watches that are tastefully designed and their simplicity and elegance makes more versatile than they should be, thus proving better value but this doesn't do that. and nor does it fall into the seiko 5 field watch catagory of it is so inexpensive you aren't worried what happens to it. so it's in a weird middle ground.
@steveo6023

Noone wants to "bling it up" - the main complaints are the samt that you have. It looks very cheap due to the large negative space and due to the really strange color.

what recommendations do you have for a watch with the following specs: - to be min 500$ - max 1,500-2,000$ - to have the mechanism visible, and the mechanism should preferably be in-house mechanical, to make a sensation when the watch is turned back. Although it's a small budget, which watch do you think puts on a real show with the mechanism? It doesn't matter the brand of the watch

You can't convey the experience of this watch on video...as great as your videos are, Teddy!:) I checked it out recently at Bucherer, and liked it far more than expected. It's a heavy, in a good way, slab o'brushed steel. The dial may be a bit blah, but you what attracts is the thing itself, in it's entirety. And how you feel wearing it. I came very close to going for it. It's low key masculine class.

Teddy, you will want to mention the fact that 39mm Ranger bracelet CAN be perfectly fitted to both Blackbay 58 Black and Navy. Doing so pretty much turns both BB58s to Submariner-lite as in a Submariner-esque dive watch that is smaller, thinner and also comes with T-fit buckle which in reality is exactly mini-glidelock. I did just that yesterday 😁 Also… buying both BB 58 with STRAPS and Tudor Ranger with BRACELET from Rolex AD that also carries Tudor can be a decent way to build relationship with them. These two highly fantastic watches will keep you very very happy till you get allocated your dream Rolex. Its resale value has also proven resillient too unlike many other brands like IWC or Panerai. You won’t stand to lose that much even if you decide to resell it later.

After seeing this watch I chose to keep my 41mm version instead. It’s a much better looking watch in my opinion. The Rose logo, the color of the markers, the Red second hand, the straight end link bracelet all help to make the 79910 a better and more interesting choice for me. And having a generous 8” wrist the 41mm size is not an issue. And the ETA movement is a times tested, easily serviced workhorse.

There’s nothing wrong with the watch. It’s going to have great appeal to a decent number of people. The watch is intended as a daily wear and to those who get it, they’ll probably grow to like it even more over time. That said, such a watch, it should also be offered in a smaller size. It’s simply a part of the DNA and as objects, they look great -small. The power reserve is great, but for a daily wear with no date complication, who cares if it stops running over one’s weekend? This design would have benefited from a less expensive ETA, allowing for a slimmer profile. The only thing I find superior on the previous generation Ranger missing here are drilled lugs. Major bummer not to have them here. I think the watch is fine but its appeal is simply going to be a bit limited. I read through the comments, there were comparisons to the Longines Spirit for example. Those are very beautiful watches and likely better value, but they scratch a different itch.

I'm one of those "weird" guys who actually prefer the shovel hour hand to the snowflake hand on the diver models. Not typically a fan of painted on markers, but eh, it's part of the model DNA. About the only thing that bugs me is the slab side case which gives it a visual cue of being thicker than a Rolex Submariner, even though the Sub is technically a millimeter thicker. I'm also wondering whether the Ranger has improved shock resistance - like the Rolex Explorer - but I'm guessing that was left as an Explorer exclusive.

Almost great. The dial markings are all painted on and all the same color. If they would’ve applied the four numerals to given it some dimension. And put some red on it to match the seconds hand (maybe the shield or the word Ranger), this thing would really be poppin.
