Gotta love instructional videos that just get to the point. No attempts at humor, no minute long production company introductions with brash music and cheap graphics, just right to the point. Certainly helps that the point is quality instructional information, and for that I thank you.

I wish I could cast so effortlessly! Really nice. I'll be purchasing this, for sure. It looks like exactly the casting technique I need to strive for to fish the places I love. I'm primarily a bass fisherman, and this looks as if it would be great for the cover and closed in places I fish. Thank you for the great video. I hope, as a beginning fly caster, to be able to cast like this one day.

Today was the first time I've really needed to roll cast in a long time (wind and terrain conditions totally negated all my other casts.) Scored a fish but, it was definitely a humbling experience as I fumbled around a bit before enough rust came off for me to achieve some form of accuracy and decent presentation lol. So now, I'm back here on this excellent instructional video that helped me get started in fly fishing last year.

This is a great video. I can't wait to practice this. Since I fly fish for largemouth bass, I find my self fishing a lot of spots on ponds with trees behind me rather than in streams. Most of my casting techniques are things I made up, but after hearing enough about the roll cast i finally decided to check it out and it looks very useful.

Great videos, looks so graceful, I just bought a fly rod yesterday and I'm going to take her down the river to have a bit of a practice today, my issue is not so much with the cast itself, but what is going on will all that extra line and so forth?, how much line should I pull off, should I have the drag loose, and how much line should I start with hanging out the end of the rod? This is beginners stuff I know but I cant find much info on it, these videos are the best I have found on casting though, If I could get half as good as you I would be happy.

Great video all round! cheers. One big question though and I don't think it's covered here.. With the Roll cast, all steps are covered, except the very first step, and that's how to get the line out in front of you first. Everytime this is demonstrated in this video, the line is already re-loaded out in front. Could you please explain or show how this is done? Cheers

Can you effectively roll cast with a 7 foot rod. The reason I ask, is because I'm looking to purchase a 7-8 foot rod for streams that are densely covered. With that said, is it null to purchase a rod of that length when you can roll cast with a 9 foot rod? Hope that makes sense.

A long belly Expert Distance Instructors line from Scientific Anglers. Probably not the easiest line to use for most, but long belly lines and DT's do tend to roll cast well.

When I roll cast everything comes out straight except for the leader. The leader is crumbled up together part of the time. REASON?
@epicflyfish8 жыл бұрын
+USColt54 Difficult to tell without seeing it, but it most likely that you are either throwing quite a large loop - and /or your loop trajectory is quite high. Don't aim to the loop up, try to roll it out parallel to the water

I HAVE A PROBLEM! I have a very good Std Overhead cast or even side armed cast. A good snake roll, a sorry Snap T...The Roll cast escapes me completely. From a bank, I can create a good D-Loop, begin the cast with the reel 14-16" from my ear, forward and out with a good Tap at the end and no matter what I do, my line goes 20 feet up 20 feet out, with the bulk of the line in a neat pile. Haul/No haul- 1 O-Clock to 11, 10, 9..doesn't matter. The results are the same. Every time I do not get a level cast, it's mostly up in a huge loop. It's better side armed, fixed line but cannot get a haul to work. -and there are no Experts in 100 miles of me except Carter Nelson who is impossible to get hold of.

The biggest problem with the roll cast is it takes a special or expensive kind of rod. An overhead cast can be done with any rod, but a roll cast demands alot more of the rod. For years I thought my technique was useless, and then this year I spent some spare money on a premium rod recommended by my local dealer, and suddenly the roll cast worked, and not only worked; it cast far as f*ck!
