The female voice is Merry Clayton. Incredible story about how she came to do that recording - look it up. In the middle of the night, she was called in to the session - arrived still in her pajamas, hair in rollers and four months pregnant.

Many comments will fixate on Merry’s vocals, but I think the other interconnected parts have to be there for Merry to shine. Keef’s tremolo effect on guitar and that driving rhythm, Charlie’s thudding drum fills, the way the intro builds up, Jagger’s distorted harmonica, producer Jimmy Miller’s percussion (güiro and maracas), Bill’s brooding bass lines, and even Nicky’s tinkerings on the piano all play an integral part in capturing the dark ethos and apocalyptic tone of the song-Merry’s more like the cherry on top.

This song is my top No.1 song from The Rolling Stones because of the lyrics, the musicianship, the melody of the song, the message of the song about "WAR." and when I first heard it on the Radio.....I fell in love with the Rolling Stones!!! I get emotional about this song with is apart my inner grief about the violence we are experiencing today....back then it was the Vietnam War. But the violence on the streets in different places in the world....i get emotional. great song!!! and Merry Clayton's voice is soooooo good Her voice just goes through my very being!!!! I really admire the way you're approaching the Rolling Stones. Going all the way back to the original blues artists, where the Stones got their licks. And listening to the early covers. Acknowledging their genesis, and following their evolution is "the way". 🙂 This was such an amazing time in their career. This album, "Let it Bleed" came on the heels of "Beggar's Banquet", and was followed by "Sticky Fingers". And then "Exile on Main Street". So much talent! It was staggering. You could devote a channel to the Rolling Stones. Well maybe a year. Google says they have 31 studio albums and 13 live albums. In any case, I'm loving this. I like when you said that Jagger seemed more comfortable playing the Rock Star. That was quite profound. Because it's true, Mick grew into the Rock Star. And they were on a roll now!

September 2001, John Mellencamp opened his shows with this. I somehow got a seat front row center. During the intro, John was stage left. Intense. Smoking a cigarette. Then the band kicks in. He spikes his cigarette like a football. Struts out and absolutely kills it for the next 2 hours straight. Half way through, the band was going OFF. One of the backup singers was five feet away from me. I mouthed, “Incredible! This. Is. EFFIN. Incredible!” She mouths back, “I KNOW. RIGHT!!” Best concert I’ve ever been to. 2 days later: the 9-11 attacks. “War!! Children!!” Crazy.

I guess Mick and Keith were hanging out with a friend in a flat in downtown London one day... right on the main street... And a riot broke out over a war protest on the street... people were actually throwing molotov cocktails, and it was out of control... I guess they were actually afraid of the flat burning down... that's where the idea and songs lyrics started for this song... how a war can break out during a mob... Great song. Great reaction. Thank you.

Merry Clayton does a tremendous job on this song, however... Originally Bonnie Bramlett, of Delaney and Bonnie and Friends (one of my very favorite bands) was tapped to sing this duet with Jagger. They spent the afternoon rehearsing the vocals. Clayton's delivery is exactly Bonnie's style, including the break in her voice. Bonnie is known to be able to scream on key. Unfortunately they spent too much time rehearsing and Bonnie blew her voice and was unable to record the final take that night. Merry Clayton was called in and did a fantastic job, right down to Bonnie's patented vocal break. Originally everyone thought it was Bonnie doing the duet, it was so Bonnie-like. But Bonnie Bramlett insisted that Merry Clayton get the credit, knowing it would be a big boost for her career. Great song from The Stones, the funkiest of the classic rock bands. I'd suggest checking out the Stones' songs Let It Bleed, Moonlight Mile, Jigsaw Puzzle, Street Fighting Man, Salt of the Earth and You Can't Always Get What You Want. Amazing band!!!
