Yup, Honky Tonk means a few things. Honky Tonk is a genre of country and rock mix, it's also harkening all of the way back to Hank Williams singing "We'll go honky tonkin', honky tonkin', we'll go honky tonkin 'round this town." Loose women is most likely what the Stone's song is referring to, which you probably would see in a Honky Tonk bar.

If I remember correctly, the song was initially written by Keith as a country/bluegrass tune as in 'Country Honk' and Mick Taylor at one point just plugged his guitar in and hammered out the riff as we know it. Changed the whole sound of the song. The rest is history. Not sure who exactly is playing lead/rhythm on the record, though.

Interestingly, the rap on The Stones has often been that they do just one thing- straightforward blues-rock. A honky tonk is a term for a dive bar, usually with a band playing -- or at least some kind of music going -- probably kinda country and rowdy but not necessarily. For your next Stones tune I recommend something off the Exiles on Main Street album, probably either "Happy" or "Tumbling Dice".

yeah, "Honky Tonk Women" was a 'slur' when this song came out. a 'honky tonk' was a bar for 'low lifes'. the only women in there were the 'easist' 'sleaziest' women in town. (please, don't let the term 'honky' throw you; in this song, it don't mean 'white women'). The Rolling Stones used this song to start each concert FOR YEARS! DECADES!! it was their 'theme song'. Bill Wyman bragged that while he was in The Rolling Stones, he had "20,000 sexual conquests." (he also bragged, he was the only member to leave the Stones and live). his replacement wrote a song called, "Country Honk". it starts like this: 🎵"Sittin' in a bar, tippin' a jar in Jackson and on the streets the summer sun it shines. Just dreamin' 'bout a girl I met in Jackson, and I just can't seem to drink her off my mind!...... 🎶....." and....Lex,. you got some moves!

I agree with Lex. Paint it Black is an alright song, I guess, but definitely not the song to introduce someone to the Rolling Stones for the very first time. Something awesome, like Honky Tonk Woman, Tumbling Dice, Dead Flowers, You can't always get what you want, Brown Sugar, all awesome first songs. Paint it Black shoulda been like number 100 on the list. Pretty sure that they are talking about the kind of women one would find in bars. Ready and willing. So he finds himself being picked up by women. A honky tonk is another name for a bar. Not an upscale bar but your smaller bar. Lot of country bars are called honky tonks. No slurs involved.

Love love the Stones! Seen them 3 times and never disappoints. First time in 1981 with pouring down rain at Cotton Bowl. Was probably 5 rows back. Water to ankles by time we left. Then, won tickets to see them in Houston on a party bus from radio station. Saw last show in October, back at Cotton Bowl. Was raining again! But great show! Great memories! The only bad part was trying to find an Uber or Lyft to pick us up after!

1st album I bought for an Expensive price of $4.99 was Sticky Fingers. At age 14 in "71 I believe. A homerun with me & millions of others. At 65 still love them. Can't You Hear Me Knockin? All of them are great. Wild Horses, blusey & soulful.
