Brian Jones first encountered the dulcimer in March 1966 while listening to recordings by Richard Fariña. During the sessions, he bought a dulcimer which he plays in the traditional style, placed on his knees while rubbing and plucking the strings with a quill, drawing inspiration from the playing of Richard Fariña. Subsequently, the Vox instrument brand custom-built a dulcimer for him on which he could play like a guitar with a pick during concerts or in TV appearances such as on the Ed Sullivan Show on September 11, 1966. Lady Jane can be considered a major song from the Aftermath album, offering an unexpected image of the group far from rock'n roll. In addition to Brian's dulcimer part, Keith excels on acoustic guitar, and arranger Jack Nitzsche's harpsichord enhances his color. Bassist Bill Wyman, discreet, intervenes on the last three verses of each verse, while Charlie Watts abandons his drums for a discreet xylophone (we notice him, however, during the appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show). Another early gem. In 1966, Brian Jones had his electric dulcimer stolen in Washington, D.C., and it is claimed it was the only one in existence at that time. Many years later this event was described in The Washington Post as Kelly, John (10 January 2023). "A stolen Rolling Stones dulcimer: You can sometimes get what you want"

@jeremybares thanks for the description. it was a magical period where they experimented with instruments and composition. Keith was taking a thousands paths for his style but keeping his mind grounded in the blues roots. from these thousands paths then 100 were left at the end of the 60s and he finally founded his own way of playing and writing music entering in the temple of gods

The guitar on the bottom doesnt make it. It's supposed to be a dulcimer (by Brian), which has a jingly sound. I understand you dont play dulcimer, but it just doesnt sound right this way .
