In 1966 or 67 our squad was coming down off of the DMZ, I believe we were nearing Quan Tri. It was a narrow trail and one of the Marines dropped a live hand gernade and shouted live gernade so I think I set the world record for the 100 yard dash, so did everyone else because no one got hurt. Now that the enemy knew where we were I was really worried, then this song played in my mind and I thought yeah this really could be the last time. Every time I hear this song I remember vividly that day and thank God that I made it back to Colorado. I was 19 then and now I am almost 77. I was in the 2nd Battalion 9th Marine Regiment I Corps\3rd Division...

An incredible song, but NOTHING without Brian Jones' incredible gnawing, tortured guitar riff...this young musical genius, providing the hook to help his younger friends Mick and Keith take the band away from him - Jones made many, many astounding musical contributions to the Stones, but this is the most 'blues' of them all - a riff that he composed and performed, that could only lead to the harm of his own fragile self-worth - really, beyond words.

The birth of rock in this, with all the heavy stuff of Kinks, The Who, Cream, Hendrix and the later Stones themselves just around the corner, but this track created the hard sound that was required so it to could be built upon. The Beatles were too sweet sounding, something tougher was needed.
