Phil Spector (before being a murderer) created the "Wall of Sound" production. And Ronnie? Ronnie Spector, she became! Hear the solid music? Mostly everything set to the same sound levels with little variation. Phil turned out to be a monster. Ronnie Spector is greatly loved.

When young Ronnie started in the music business she was still living at home in Harlem NYC. One day she asked her mother if she could bring her new English friends home for tea. Her mother said yes, ok. When they came around and filed into the room, Ronnie’s mother was shocked to see how thin they were. They were The Rolling Stones.

Hal Blaine on drums with the iconic drum intro also with the Wrecking Crew group of studio musicians created that Wall of Sound. This is the 60's sound at it's best. The Ronettes were named after the lead singer Ronnie (Veronica) with her sister Estelle and cousin Nedra on backing vocals. Nedra was always my favourite, she just looked so innocent yet cool. For the record, though, they were not on Tamla-Motown, they recorded for Phil Spector's label Philles.

Okay, I remember this one also. Geez, most of these were out when I was a kid. Okay, I had to look it up but this song was in the movie Dirty Dancing so that's how I remember it. Found this interesting: Ronnie Spector is the only Ronette to appear on the record. The Blossoms, led by Darlene Love, and Sonny and Cher were part of the group of guests that provided additional backup vocals. The song was released as a single in 1963 and Brian Wilson (of the Beach Boys) has declared 'Be My Baby' the greatest pop record ever made.

IIRC, those "little breaks" - usually towards the end of a song - where the music stops a beat then kicks back in is called a "caesurae". "caesuras or ; Latin for "cutting"), also written cæsura and cesura, is a metrical pause or break in a verse where one phrase ends and another phrase begins. It may be expressed by a comma, a tick, or two lines, either slashed (//) or upright (||)." It has to be used sparingly, but it has a great effect. David Bowie, "Suffragette City" for example. Meanwhile, not obeying any rules, Chuck Berry used about two hundred of them in "My Ding-A-Ling". The adventure continues!

Ronnie Spector's eventual husband, Phil Spector, was the originator of this sound. it was called THE WALL OF SOUND and was hugely influential to other artists including the Beach Boys. He married Ronnie and being a crazy bastard kept her prisoner in his house. He once pulled a gun on John Lennon. He is in prison now for murder but at one time he was the master. Sonny and Cher sang backup on his records before they made it big. So much history in music.

@MRoyClark4 жыл бұрын
Seriously, one of the greatest (and most imitated) songs of any era, it wasn't Motown, at all. The Ronettes (originally Ronnie and The Ronettes, named for Ronnie/Veronica, the lead singer). They were one of the key groups of The Girl Group sound. Like a lot of the original Girl Groups, they were produced by Phil Spector (who married Ronnie, the singer) and his legendary and influential "Wall of Sound" style of production, which often involved at least a couple dozen musicians crammed into a tiny space. Multiple pianos, guitars, drumkits, etc. He is an EXTREMELY fascinating character and was also the producer behind those Righteous Brothers hits we all love. Phil Spector tended to work with songwriters from the Brill Building in NY, where several songwriting duos of the 1950s-60s came from. He also worked with "The Wrecking Crew" on most of his records. They were a loose assemblage of insanely talented (usually Jazz-trained) studio musicians who played on half the pop hits of the 1960s (The Monkees, Sonny & Cher, The Mamas & The Papas, The Ronettes, Righteous Brothers, Nancy Sinatra, The Beach Boys). Apart from the distinctive production style and Ronnie's one-of-a-kind vocal style, the real star of this show is Hal Blaine's drum-work. Few beats have been more imitated in the history of Rock'n'Roll than the *Bump Bu-Bum POP* intro of "Be My Baby" (US#2, 1963). As brilliant and popular and influential as this song was, The Ronettes only had a handful of other hits. "Baby, I Love You" (US#24, 1963) and "Walking in the Rain" (US#23, 1964) are their next two biggest, but almost all of their originals are peerless. But your Phil Spector/Brill Building/Wrecking Crew/Girl Group Sound journey is just kicking off. Next stop, The Crystals! Check out "Da Doo Ron Ron (When He Walked Me Home)" (US#3, 1963), "He's a Rebel" (US#1, 2wks 1962), and "Then He Kissed Me" (US#6, 1963). They were Phil Spector's pet project before The Ronettes and feature the same musicians, backing singers, and songwriters.
