Delta Floss no its horrible. shingles have a thin layer of silica granulas wich like sand reflects the sunlight. This thermal and UV protection is super important not only to the cooling effeciency of your home but also to the life of the shingle. Couple that with the fact that you can actually break down the actual substrate of the shingle with high pressure and yes "pressure" washing is horrible for a shingle roof.
@JOSHUAloves15 жыл бұрын
Wow. I cannot believe you just pressure wash the shingle roof. I'm sure he's learned by now.

Lol. I own two roofing companies in 3 different states. Homeowners, as much as I would love to replace your roof, pressure washing basically destroys the shingles. This family will need a new roof in a year or two. You simply use the correct chemicals. No washing needed if done right

What would you recommend for cleaning a roof with moss? I'm trying to find something that I can use for my asphalt shingles on the Oregon coast.

Stop ruining our industry by promoting pressure washing a roof to customers. Youre doing more harm then good. So sad to see, and you wonder why pressure washers get a bad name. Invest in the correct equipment and you will save countless amount of time and money while doing an actual good job. My company would of knocked out that roof in 30 minutes with pressure that doesn't even match a hard thunderstorm.

Folks, just because you see a pressure washer doesn't mean high pressure is being used. Any shingle manufacturer will tell you that any pressure less than 1200psi is absolutely safe on any roof to include tile and clay.
@northjerseykevin3915 Жыл бұрын
Nicely done. It looks like the roof turned out great. I don’t know how I’d feel about someone having a power washer one my roof but maybe I’m overthinking it. Well done 👍🏻
@davidstearsraingutterclean672911 ай бұрын
You’re absolutely right you never use a pressure washer on any type of roofing material. Specially, an asphalt shingle you’ll blow those granules off the tile.

How not to clean a roof! That solution didn't do anything. Try 1 part 12% Sodium Hydrchlorite, 2 parts water and a little dish soap. Spray on. Works like a charm. No rinsing.

Hey guys, I am reading here a lot of "HYPE" about SoftWashing roofs. Are you guys NOT using any rinsing at all? It seems to me that some "mechanical action" is needed to remove biofilm (either pressure washing OR scrubbing) along with the softwash solution. I mean seriously, Imagine just having use mouthwash to clean teeth, gumsand mouth and not having to brush or use a Sonic care, and maybe even go to the dentist for a good cleaning every so often **Think it Through** I've been washing houses and roofs for 30 years. I apply a strong chlorine and soap (as a surfactant) solution via downstream injection. If there is only black streaks I will wash off with light pressure that same day. If there is a lot of lichen or moss I will apply my mixture but allow it 'dwell' for at least a week. those growths die, dry up and nature has her way with it. Hell, if a customer is in no hurry I'll come back a month to five months later - reapply my solution and the lichen just melts off! No damage to roofs, but some "mechanical action" is needed, in my opinion.

Garrett Fast No, it's Hydrogen Peroxide based. Totally Eco-Safe.
@Troy-Echo8 жыл бұрын
Totally Eco-Safe, and all but totally worthless for cleaning these dark stains off of roofs. If you insist on still pressure washing, at least get a roof rover or other form of surface cleaner to speed up the job. How can you expect people to take you as a serious authority on roof cleaning when you are mixing your product in a $10 trash can, stirring with a broom, and using a $300 pressure washer from some big box store? You can see that after you thoroughly drenched the roof with the Hydrogen Peroxide (HP), and started pressure washing, the roof was just as dirty as before you started. The spray application is a magic trick to misdirect customers from the fact that pretty much all you're doing is pressure washing their roof. I'm not sure if you've done much research on roof cleaning, but the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) states clearly in their technical bulletins that the proper way to clean an asphalt roof with these dark stains is to use bleach and water, not Hydrogen Peroxide. And at the bottom of that same technical bulletin it says verbatim, "Caution! High pressure washing systems are likely to damage asphalt roofing and should not be used on asphalt roofing for removing algae or for any other purpose." But yet, you still use a pressure washer which tells me you haven't done that much research or had much training in roof cleaning, or you just don't care about prolonging the life of your customers roofs, you just want a quick buck. You claim it is 'low pressure", but yet you still see the water pressure is so high it splashes 10-15 feet to the sides after hitting the roof. The HP does not kill the Gloeocapsa Magma, which is the most prevalent cause of these dark roof stains on roofs. You say if you cannot hold the pressure washer with one hand, the pressure is too high. I say if you are holding a pressure washer wand AT ALL, you are using too much pressure. Pressure washing does not kill the Gloeocapsa Magma either, it just strips if off the surface and blasts it around. Once you have so called 'cleaned' an area, when you go to the next pass to the side you are just blasting live bacteria off the roof and depositing it back onto the areas you just pressure washed. Only now the algae is landing on freshly uncovered limestone as the pressure washer has eroded away the surface and blasted gallons of roof granules off of the roof, reducing the amount of protection your roof provides. The live Gloeocapsa Magma is also now in the yard all the way around the house where it will be tracking into the house by foot traffic and pets. Customers should not be paying you for this service, they should be taking you to court for damaging their roof and voiding their manufacturers warranty. Soft Washing is the proper way to clean a roof, not Hydrogen Peroxide and a pressure washer. You can argue with me all you want, and I'll just point you back to the technical bulletin that the Roofing Manufacturers put out, unless you want to argue that the roofing manufacturers are not a proper authority on cleaning roofs, at which case you already lost the argument. I wish you and your wife success, but hopefully you'll get some proper Soft Wash training, still make a good living, and add value to your service. The only down side is that when you properly Soft Wash a roof, it typically stays clean for 5+ years, so you won't be cleaning a roof every single year or other year as you are now. Then again, as a Soft Washing professional, you can offer a 5 year guarantee as a selling point, versus people that pressure wash trying to rope people into a yearly maintenance contract or giving a 1 year guarantee, if you even offer a guarantee at all with your business? To be honest, you'd probably have a better clean if you pressure washed first, then applied the HP and let it sit until the rain washed it away. That may actually kill the residual bacteria on the roof after you pressure wash.
@masonpfefferle57155 жыл бұрын
@@Troy-Echo What would you recommend solution wise for cleaning the roof? Is there a specific brand you would recommend.
@Troy-Echo5 жыл бұрын
@@masonpfefferle5715 Mason, sorry for the late reply...this was in the "social media" section of my gmail that I seldom check. If you don't have professional training and products, I'd suggest using the highest concentration of powdered bleach you can find and mix it. About 1 ounce per gallon of water will make a 1% bleach solution. You'll need someone to continually spray and rinse the house, windows, deck, plants, literally anything that can be oversprayed by wind carrying the solution. Professionals use liquid bleach which won't stain, but if you don't know what you're doing you can kill every plant around your house, versus having a few white circle spots on the leaves. Rinse the plants, but 95% of your focus should be rinsing the windows and house. Leaves will recover, but if you get powdered bleach on your house and let it dry, it's a pain to get off. You don't have that issue with liquid bleach, but without training, there is a good chance you'll end up nuking a lot of plants. You can cover plants with tarps, but if you leave them too long, it creates a greenhouse effect and cooks the plant, which is worse than getting bleach on the plant. I'd do a single application, let it sit for a while, at least one good rain, then do any touch ups. I seriously recommend not getting on a roof unless you have a safety harness and use a leaf blower to clear the roof. People think that being a cop or fire fighter is dangerous, but if you add the number of deaths from both professions, combined they usually won't break the top 10 most dangerous jobs in America. Roofing work typically ranks #3 or #4 in the most dangerous jobs in America, so that is why I typically suggest leaving it to the professionals with the right equipment and training.
