The Netherlands or modern countries didn't exist . The land was owned by nobility . It was in the "seven provinciën " were the "multinationals " VOC and WIC were operating from. You had a division on the ships in front and at the back of the mast . The wealthy captain ,officers and passagiers and the poor crew many victims of forged labour (slaves) of the compagnie. Death by the inhuman conditions high ,about 20 % of the crew every trip from the seven provinciën to the east ,Batavia ( Java ) or decima (japan) etc. Some periods only 30% survived their VOC contract (5-6 years) These losses were calculated with the profits .
