Here I interview popular philosophy professor Dr Steven Taubeneck, who specializes in modern European thought. Dr Taubeneck studied directly under RIchard Rorty, and has given highly acclaimed lectures in both in European Studies and philosophy departments across North America.
Here we talk about where existentialism as a movement came from, beginning with Hegel, and continuing to the likes of Kierkegaard and Dostoyevsky. In Part II we move on to Heidegger, the continental-analytic split, post-modernism, and more.

I took three classes with Dr. Taubeneck in UBC. He is one of the most caring, thoughtful professors I have ever met. Under his modesty and graciousness, he has an indisputable grasp of German cultural history, and the imposing conceptual edifices of the German Idealists. Dr. Taubeneck translated Hegel's Lesser Logic for the German Library, and this fact was not even mentioned in his classes. If you are lucky enough to take his classes, do it.

This is the best overview of modern western thought I have seen - in something less than 5-10 years of hard work. When you have the time you should watch this and think about it, and watch it again. Hopefully, it inspires you to read some of the actual philosophy.

I took a class at UW (Seattle) way back in 1989 from him! It was right after the Berlin Wall fell. Topics were social theory starting with Thomas Hobbes' Leviathan, then lots of others. I'll try to remember: Rousseau and the Social Contract, J.S. Mill, Marx, Nietzsche, Freud. Maybe more but I can't remember lol.

Fantastic conversation, and a great guest. Richard Rorty had a gift for clearly explaining the complex works in the western philosophical canon, and Dr. Taubeneck seems to have it in spades as well. Thanks!

38:50 your catch that kirkegaard and percy creat their powerful philosophies at the same time (ish) is such a useful observation for someone (me) trying to understand human history (existence) as "unfolding truth" over time, events, and earnest, *derivative* thought. ( ie. Its extremely motivating to make seemingly causal connections in the history of ideas) Jordan, this guy is a wealth of knew knowledge and perspectives for me, but it's your sharp, clarifying questions that make this so gripping. Thanks. I'll continue to donate when I'm able.
