Here I interview popular philosophy professor Dr Steven Taubeneck, who specializes in modern European thought. Dr Taubeneck studied directly under RIchard Rorty, and has given highly acclaimed lectures in both in European Studies and philosophy departments across North America.
In Part I of this interview, we discussed the origins of existentialism as a movement, beginning with Hegel, and continuing to the likes of Kierkegaard and Dostoyevsky. (See Part I: • The Roots of Existenti... )
Here in Part II, we move on to a discussion of Heidegger, the emergence of post-modernism, the continental-analytic split in modern philosophy, and how each of these is related.
At the end of the interview, I ask Taubeneck to recommend a small handful of readings for those interested in pursuing these ideas further. He suggests the following three pieces:
Trotsky and The Wild Orchids -- Richard Rorty:

Plato's 'Symposium':

The Question Concerning Technology -- Martin Heigdegger:

Jordan, your mission, should you choose to accept it: A 3-4 part conversation between Dr. Steven Taubeneck and Dr. Jordan Peterson. Personally, I think that they would get much further than Peterson and Harris did. Taubeneck has such expansive knowledge of the field and there is so much more to tap into with his experience and perspective. Keep bringing together the best of the best to discuss the deepest of the deep!

@@groundedtruth1358 the conversation on Mind Matters between Peterson and Vervaeke was far more interesting than the Harris debates. I would like Jordan to get Vervaeke and Taubeneck together with our Jordan as moderator. I enjoy Zizek's books but he will be an awful foil for Peterson I fear...

@@daNihilism I have watched Peterson/Vervaeke and that was, as you stated, very interesting! I think that all three of them together would be wonderful to see and mainly I would like the conversation to more deeply explore the territory of Vervaeke, Taubeneck, and Peterson - where I think more examination is needed. Whereas with Harris, I just don't find the same depth of analysis. Zizek I don't know that well but my gut tells me (from a preliminary perusal of his writing) that he is along the lines of "hating the competent" as Peterson frames it.

Lovley! From about 30-50 mins I began thinking of an unstranding rope,,, melted back together ( destructively for the individual strands) so as to halt the fraying and hold the rope together,,, alas this makes an artificial end and halts the twining flow.... and ended the rope. I think I want the rope to go on! I will take care of those melted ultimatums.... I will listen just a couple more times. Thankyou!

Awesome video. I love the whole subject matter! What would you recommend for an Eastern philosophy? In the same thread of the classical thinking of the east, as Plato Aristrol is of the west. I believe we need to balance the two to get closer to a whole picture as we can get. I just can't believe the west is the only ones who cornered the market of a classical way of thinking. What do you know about the silk roads book? Thank you!

As he describes it, existentialism seems like a close cousin of realism, with worry.

If there are no essences (internal identities) that make things what-they-are - mind provides this function. This is a non-dualistic condition (also known as a neutral monism). On that basis there is no true distinction between self and other, and no functional basis for privileging self over other. This means that this wish for others happiness is equal to our own and chasing ownership of material objects cannot possibly provide happiness or satisfaction (they have no internal properties that accomplish this). This is the basis of the unification of ontology, epistemology and ethics. Latent-subliminal materialism gets in the way of or ability to see this directly or even clearly.

We are the dancers at the end of time. I really like these videos - but I feel like I need to say that you can only be this blaze' about these kinds of issues if you have never had to fight for your life on a very steep mountain side, or in combat, or even in a board room. This mere academic approach mistakes lack of commitment for open mindedness. There are solutions to these question and they lead to decisive correct action in the next moment - not for the sake of self - for the sake of other. They are pragmatic not intellectual. They are the fruit of direct perception under difficult and demanding circumstances - not mere intelectual speculation.
