I've been struggling with religious OCD for about a year and there's soooo much in this video that 1) I've heard no one else say before and 2) hits so many nails right on the head. I've learned so much about OCD over the past year, and God is helping me to heal, and this talk feels like the last bit I needed to know to move on to freedom. Hugely useful and informative talk. Thank you so much.

WOW! What a revelation! In one fell swoop you basically destroyed the scrupulosity I didn't even know I had! What an absolute relief! I never considered myself scrupulous as it's related to obsessive compulsive stuff and I figured that wasn't me but wow! It's great to say I was horribly wrong and my image of God was distorted and unrecognizable; I honestly hated him and was afraid of even considering it. What a prison. Honestly the hard part from here will be believing in such a good (almost unbelievably so) God. It's like I've been leveled and starting from scratch.

As someone who has spent seven years in secular exposure therapy, I have a long known that I have desperately needed a spiritual help. I can tell you, it’s just very hard to find someone with your level of insight. I pray I can. Thanks for the video. It really does encourage hope.

I have been suffering with this issue. I want to be close to Jesus and be healed through Holy Communion but I am often unsure whether I should receive because of the way I view how God will judge me. Vicious cycle. 😢My knowledge of the faith tells me to not worry.... I confess a lot and haven't committed grave sin as far as I'm aware!!!! but logic doesn't seem to play a part in it. You're right. It's how I'm viewing God as judgmental and not with the great love He has for me. You have helped me think about the issues of my past and how this may have played a role in why I'm experiencing this now. God willing it will pass if I trust God more.....

Thank you for this video to you both. My mom, brother, and I are currently struggling with Scrupulosity. This video gives me hope because it helped me confirm that my perception of God is misguided and false. I go from believing and feeling that God loves me to forgetting this and while I am still able to profess that God is love (unless I am in the thick darkness of it) and believe it intellectual, it is hard for me to feel it and believe it with my heart. For future videos, since Dr. Peter mentioned that he was influenced by Carmelite spirituality, could you two make a video about dark night of the soul and how it may relate to Scrupulosity and OCD? I also recently learned that St Therese of Lisieux suffered from a lot of anxiety and OCD; could you talk about this more? It gives me hope when I realize that saints also struggled with mental difficulties.

St therese is wonderful. St Alphonsus ligouri and st Ignatius of Loyola also suffered from it. On Amazon their is a book I think called “Overcoming Scrupulosity with the help of the Saints.” It’s a good one

Brownieluv1350 I will. I suffer from scrupulosity too. You need to have a regular confessor. Only go to one. And if possible try to get a spiritual director and a therapist (I have a catholic one)

I have a problem with the many parts ascept of the human soul. The soul is a spirit and has no parts. But I do recognise that a human spirit experiences reality in parts and that is reflected in the person. So the multiplicity of reaction in the person comes from the reaction to the multiplicity of experiences and attachments in the world. But if we let go and just attach to God who is simple love and goodness. Our interior will reflect that.

It almost seems sometimes that in our society scruplousity is praised or even rewarded. I went to a dentist recently and the way dentists clean your teeth just feels brutal. These dentist were students and they literally flossed and scraped my teeth until it was bleeding and when I spat out into the sink I was appalled at how much blood was there. And then I asked them if that was normal and the way they did it, and they were like yeah- didn’t even bat an eyelid. They had to do what they did because they needed to show their professor there was no plaque. But in the process, I think they ruined my gums a bit- it didn’t feel natural, that’s for sure.... anyways... this experience only reminded me more of my scruplousity and the ways I behave scrupulously in my life... and talking about these sort of things just makes me feel more attached to my scrupulousity for security and rewards in my belief it will deal with the problems I have. But then again that’s the problem. Am I going to let go of control and enter the experience of a loving God? How am I going to experience and realise an image of God that is different than what this world perpetuates? I think I need therapy for this. There is so much anger and hurt in my life, and just listening to this provided me some relief. But I think I need more than just listening... I live in Melbourne Australia though. If you can let me know of a good Catholic Psychologist like this guy, that would be so great!

I am glad this video helped and I agree that therapy is essential in further healing. There is a lot of hope when it comes to scrupulosity and it can also help to conceptualize it from an OCD perspective. It is common to want to hold on to various behaviors or self-checking habits out of fear of doing something bad or giving up control. It makes sense but God calls us to more and to real healing. Hoping you can find a good therapist to continue your healing journey!

To me when I imagine God I see an old angry man sending fire from sky. It is hard for me to think Lord Jesus and angry Father and unknown Holy Spirit are one. I accept Churches teaching but I can't imagine. I accept God (Old man) is loving but I don't believe. I believe that God is unknown. Who created this existence. Maintaining this existence. Giving birth to new existence. Observing. Set his/her/? law of nature. He put conscience in us. He is like a refery with rules and we are in a game. So he is neither loving nor hateful. We as human creatures anthropomorphic God through various faith traditions. But being Catholic is my identity. So I will remain Catholic until I start dating. Then I will join Episcopalian Church.

It can be really hard to see God as an all loving Father when what we encounter with men, parents, and in other relationships is so broken. Before leaving the Church I encourage you to talk to a priest about these things AND a Catholic therapist if possible! Our own life experiences shape how we relate to God as Father and what we expect from Him. Keep leaning into the Holy Spirit!
