Thanks, Lohengrin! There are few sopranos more lauded for the role of Butterfly than de los Angeles, and for good reason! She INHABITS the role of Cio-Cio-San, visually, dramatically, and lyrically. This is a referential interpretation, indeed.

I love that she was not a true dramatic soprano but more like a falcon or a spinto with bright centre. Cio Cio San is a 15 years old teen. The first Butterfly was a lírico coloratura which makes total sense.

She was not a coloratura in the American sense, but more a lirico coloratura in the Italian way; a Lirico with some ease in the high notes and good at singing coloraturas and fiorituras. I just saw Butterfly in Prague with a dramatic soprano and I really do not like it although the singer was really good. can always say it's a matter of taste of course.

@@LohengrinO Scotto could be considered yes a lirico coloratura,... although the metallic of her voice, to me, sounds ...... She did evolve to heavier (too much too many maybe) rolls in the second half of her career... Generally speaking, they cannot get those high notes for too long. Maybe Rosa Feola would be in that category I think.
