Toyotas don't break down very often, but when they do, the culprit is usually something simple...
This 2002 Toyota Highlander limped it to my shop, and the owner said he couldn't rev it over 2k rpm.

Another fun diagnosis, thank you. I believe many O2 sensor heaters are shut off by the PCM when the engine is already hot. No need to waste the energy, but presumably the code persists until at least the next cold start...

Ave! Ye ol' druid of the hollow pines... The fuel metering systems Toyota (and I believe BMW) uses are typically modifiable to split single bank engines (less expensive than designing a whole new software and driver system). That said, half of the cylinders are one bank while the other half are the other. On some iterations of this application, there are two AFR sensors! Hope this helps deciphering the PIDs. What solution is possible if OEM parts fabrication is outsourced to China? ...DENSO? ASIN? what else. Anything can brake down... just do not install cheap crop on to great cars! Or replace parts in accordance of MFD projected life span - like oxygen sensor at 90k miles or spark plugs and wires every 30K etc.

@@gregstrakovsky5008 yes true about service parts intervals, however if you look at the "non genuine" ones in car that owner changed there was date marked when installed 2017 so only 2 years old, coils should last longer no matter what brand in my opinion. china syndrome i guess comes down to OEM QC at the factorys in kina.

I replaced 8 coils on a 4.6l from Drive Works and a month later it came back with a #2 misfire bad coil. There are some quality control issues with cheaper components . The customer understood that when I did the estimate . Great video . Thumbs up

Great work Ivan. I'm wondering if I should go ahead and replace the coil packs even though they are working fine? I replaced them at 95K with oem when two originals started acting up. Now, my vehicle has 195K on it. I also wonder if the EGR valve should be replaced now as it is original, but hard to get at.

Hmm, Is that Vehicle history stored locally on the tool, or does Snap-On store that data where anyone with a Snap-On scan tool can see it? That would be handy if someone else needed to work on it at a later date

2 banks is common on 4 cylinders also. Rav4 4 cylinders also have 2 banks.

Simple math. 1A = close to 15W, should be close to a brake lights bulb or rear blinkers bulb.

After experience i am a OEM or OEM spec guy mostly, bearings, ignition coil etc. Had a boiling cat on my previous 02 focus because coil failure. The cat survived but you can literally hear the gas boiling in the cat 😅 Great video as always. 👍😊

General rule on standard 4 wire O2 sensors is the two wires of same colors are the heater wires, the darker of the other 2 wires is the signal wire and the last one is the signal ground. Known exception are some Honda vehicles where the ground wire is the the darker one.

I installed a BWD ignition coil on a 2005 Altima, 2.5. 18 months later, the car got towed in. I had no spark on all four cylinders. When I pulled the BWD coil, it was melted. It wound up that the aftermarket coil blew the ECM fuse. I changed the coil, and the new fuse promptly blew again. Disconnected the harness at both ends, and checked for shorts, there were none. I pulled the ECM, opened it up and noticed that the circuit board was burnt. Lesson learned, I had to replace the ECM with a reconditioned unit. The rebuilder was able to program the security code from the damaged ECM.

Here most cars are Straigth block 4 cylinders. If you see 2 blocks(on scan tool) in here that usualy means that exhaust is split in two. Cylinder 1 and 4 are "block 1" and have own firsth cat. cylinder 2 and 3 are "block 2" with own firsth cat. At this part of the video it sounds like blocked cats/exhaust you allso seam to have more then ones both cat codes P0420 and P0430 in memory of that scantool...

you are correct... bank1 is cylinder 1 and 4..... bank 2 are cylinder 2 and 3...... and you have two catakytic converters .. one for each bank.... therefore you have 2 o2 sensors after the catalytic converter.... one for each bank to keep track of the efficinecy of the catalytic converters..

That 2.4 L has 2 cats on the exhaust manifold. One cat for cylinder 1 & 4 & the other 2 & 3. Makes for an expensive cat replacement.

The lamp you used to test the O2 heater circuit, looks like a 250mA globe 3Watt not a 1A globe. ie 12W.

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Once you know the o2 sensor is bad, I'd consider leaving the o2 sensor plugged in and cut the heater wires open (sensor side,) connect the test light there. I'm curious if the pcm needs to see the rest of the o2 sensor connected to turn on the heater? Perhaps it needs more satisfaction than just the correct resistance on the heater circuit?

Yep!!! Ivan sure taught us all a lesson, on this one!! Two plus years later, and a come back, but not his fault!! An old coil that was replaced before he got it, failed. The fix? Another old coil that hadn't failed, but was recently replaced as a precaution, but not bad!! Then, he put it back on the car, when the other aftermarket coil, went bad! You cannot ma,e this stuff up! Writers of fiction novels can't make this stuff up!! I mean, keeping your own parts, for your own car, is one thing!! Needing to use them later on, is a matter of chance!! But to keep an old part, from someone else's car, years afterwards, and then needing it to work, PURE GENIUS ILL bet that he STRUTTED IN FRONT OF MRS PINE HOLLOW AUTO DIAGNOSTICS, and told her that "THE PARTS PILE YOU BEEN BUGGING ME TO CLEAN UP, JUST CAME IN HANDY!! Just like BIG DADDY said it would"! Lol. PRICELESS!!!

the same way as you did that test at minute 8:35 I did it one time man bad experience, you have compression coming out the hole of plug, the spark plug near the area big flame came out in my case plus my fire stinger was empty from being seating for years with out using or and inspections.

Does that car need an oil change? Is there too much raw gas diluting the oil? Personally, i would change oil and filter...how can it hurt, once engine runs properly. Great video as usual. I noticed some people gave this a thumbs down. WTF is wrong with people.

The test light won't light because it does not see the same resistance. A bulb lighting has a different ohms to that when cold. Swapping out the sensors did the business. The ECM has a narrow window to operate in. Funny set up with 4 sensors. A 100 watt bulb with ohms 9.5 would give out 1500w at a voltage of 120 with no change in Ω.

those friggin coil packs, back in the day it was just 1 coil for all the cylinders and you kept it away from the engine heat they would last forever. Now? the heat destroys them as they're resting right on the valve cover and you have 4 of them (at least) could be 8 on v-8! ahhhh! so now you have to replace 4 instead of 1 coil, thank you engineers!

Why 4 O2 sensors? You can use same PCM with V6 and I4. V6 has two banks and two cats? With four banger put one O2 sensor per each header exit anf two after the cat -> same controller and same SW works. Cheaper to put extra two O2 sensors than maintain two SW versions.

It would affect driveability if indeed it was blocked up. The only issue it has at this point is the precious metals are worn or gone & no longer doing anything. The car at this point, isn't having breathing problems, from what I'm seeing.

Yep! SO MANY videos out there ... where WORSE problems developed after ONLY ONE Coil or Plug was replaced. The DEALERS ... LOVE IT ... esp the back coils on the V-6 Highlander / Lexus RX300. The owner in this video is lucky to have a 4-Cylinder engine. Here's a clue: Is it possible that when plugs get OLD and ONE fails ... the others ARE NOT far behind? Ditto (on V6) at 120K ... dealer will change all 6 plugs ... per factory "Book" ... but NO (Zero) Coils changed. This is to HIDE the egregious mark-up on the Coils. See below for $$$ ! On our V6 1MZ-FE 2003 RX300, I replaced ALL 6 Coils and all 6 Iridium Plugs during my DIY, 120K miles service. The dealer charges to change all 6 plugs ... BUT DOES NOT change ANY of the coils ... THEN ... they replace each coil as it fails down the road. $550 for a front coil (1 hour diag, then 1 hour labor, then $189 ... so, $950 for one rear coil. (1 Hr Diag, 4 Hours labor (both @ $150 per hour), PLUS $189 for ONE COIL. (Plus rags and hand cream / gloves for the mechanic?) The corrupt dealers ... and most "hungry" shops ... count on the ignorance of the average owner to hide their manipulative GREED! As mentioned above: For a $55 Denso Coil, from Rock Auto, the local dealer charges $189 EACH. That coil costs THEM perhaps less than $35. Then $150 per hour to change ONE front one and 4 hours to change ONE BACK COIL. INSANE! Let's hear it for "Greed Conquers Empathy!" The dealers and their mechanics LOVE it. Like having mobile "Piggy Banks" on wheels! !!! I have seen all over the internet where future PROBLEMS were "Built-In" ... even at the wonderful site run by ERIC O. ... e.g. Just ONE coil changed earlier, then a bad coil down the road caused a failed alternator and another tow-in? ... when that "Old / Original" coil (s) caused such a severe "Mis-Fire", it took out the Orig. Alternator. And that was a simple 4-cylinder engine !!! MINUTES to have changed ALL the Coils. Suggestion For: Honest shops like South Main Auto Do NOT be afraid to "Quote High for relliability". No matter WHAT you charge ... the dealer would charge 2 or 3 X your fees. Just explain WHY you want to change ALL COILS AND PLUGS ... on the first failure. Life-wise, I learned that HARD LESSON early-on from my wonderful British Wife: Whenever I asked her permission to explain the cost/benefit ratio to her ... She LOVED it. Whether it was cleaning, caulking and painting the entire house THIS YEAR ... Or doing the 120K service on HER CAR ... TODAY. When I explained the "All Coils and All pugs" situation ... she said: "Of course; it makes perfect sense. Thanks, John." John in the NW

I'd have saved the coil ... then lost it in the rest of the crap I can't throw away when I needed it ... 😂 I always find it after the money parts from my wallet, though! Just a coil - not bad! If that was my Silverado, any misfire could be broken valve springs, seized lifters, bad cam, or walked or failed cam bearings (among other things). Should've bought a 'Yota! 😉

Wouldn't you want to unplug the fuel injector on that cylinder so it doesn't keep dumping gas into the exhaust? You sure were in no hurry to get that engine turned back off.
