The full review of Royal Enfield's new Super Meteor 650. Since the Harley Davidson Sportster 883 was discontinued in 2021, no one has taken the crown of mid sized, classically styled cruiser. Can Royal Enfield do it, with their Super Meteor?

I have been saying this for some time now. HD made a very poor decision in perhaps the worst economic time to make such a decision to go all premium. To compound it, they’ve alienated future younger riders from buying into their brand, while RE has done the complete opposite, and I think they will be rewarded for that now and in the future, while HD will pay the price.

Have you seen the SWM Stormbreaker? It's a Chinese/Italian clone of Harley-Davidson Sportster forty-eight, with an air-cooled V-Twin. That could well be an affordable Harley for the masses. It's priced at 9,990 euros (~$11,000)

The only thing that's stopping younger buyers is the price. As far as their range goes it's still pretty good. I'd personally (along with others, I'm sure) rather buy a 3-5 year old Sportster instead of the new models but they've still got great bikes such as the Street Bob and Low Rider S. In my opinion, and not meant in a harsh way, Royal Enfield has only captured younger minds because of the price and the small CC capacity. They're not realistically long term bikes because you'll get bored of a 650cc pretty quickly and won't be able to readily do long tours on it.

Just an ordinary guy who loves bikes and knows how to talk about them in a human way. Another great video. Also, I agree… for all the effort they put into making this a premium-feeling offering, why-oh-why did they opt for those God-awful offset plasticky gauges. Completely lets the bike down. They could have easily just fitted the Interceptor gauges if it was a budgeting issue. Utterly baffling.

I think it absolutely beautiful 😍 The rear mudguard/fender is a work of art. My only objection is the Roger Ramjet sign on the right side casing above rear brake. A simple speedometer was all this bike required, no need for navigation or cheap digital extras. The old Royal Enfield badge on the tank would have been perfect. Superb review as always, Freddie. Given the lack of an entry level Harley option and the Super Meteor's status quo-defying affordability, the temptation is definitely there. That said, the one possible deal breaker is its weight in relation to its power. In my case, it's tough to transition from a bike that weighs 419 lb's with 150 horsepower to a 500 lb bike with less than 50 - granted its a non performance oriented cruiser, of course. For better or worse, us yanks aren't unlike the Germans in that we often care more about spec sheets than raw character. 😉

I really love this bike. It's on the list I have, with a handful of other bikes, for what I might like once I graduate from my 125. I don't know what it is though that just seems slightly off to me. It's not the tripper navigation, I actually like that, or at least the idea. Rather than having my smartphone on the bars, I think the tripper is a good compromise. I know some people might just say to rely on road signs or figure out where you're going then ride, but I find GPS navigation takes your mind off worrying where you're going, allowing you to focus on what's happening on the road.

Like every other reviewer I've seen, you compared the Super Meteor 650 to the Honda Rebel 500. I don't understand why nobody is comparing it to the Honda Shadow 750 instead. The shadow also has the classic cruiser styling, and is similar in terms of size, weight, power and price. The Shadow offers fewer features for a little more money, but it does bring a proper V-twin motor and a reputation for reliability and durability that it's built over the last few decades. I'd love to see someone do a head-to-head comparison video.

Royal Enfield has said they intend to dominate the midsized motorcycle market. With the Super Meteor and the shot gun there is no reason they won't be able to achieve that goal. After riding lots of used bikes, I did five months of research and then bought the Super Meteor as my first brand new bike. I have had several brand-new cars I felt like it was time for me to get a brand-new bike. The Super meteor checked all the boxes, It has plenty of power to do 80 MPH on the U.S interstates. It is very reliable, the cost is reasonable, the comfort of the ride is second to none, the way it has no vibration at 75MPH is wonderful.

Hi Freddie, I have listed my 350 Meteor's shortcomings as: 1. no kick-starter 2. pathetic chain-guard (RE should take a lesson from BSA's 441 Shooting Star - or better still, MZ's Supa 5) 3. ridiculously small tool box (just a slot, really) 4. no fork gaiters It looks like the Super Meteor suffers from exactly the same shortcomings. Apart from these few flaws, I love my Meteor; it's brought the fun back to London biking, something I had thought was lost forever. The Super Meteor looks magnificent but, at least for me, is too heavy in weight and too heavy on fuel compared to the Interceptor. Still, a great video - there's something compulsive about your style. Keep it going.

MZs enclosed chain was a brilliant idea, which no-one else has done, as far as I know? Passed my test on an MZ 125 and used an ETZ 251 for 6 months in the 90s, when my GS550 chop was bounced down the road! Commuted 400 miles a week, country roads and motorways and never missed a beat.

Number 1 "No kick starter" ? That's an odd one if you don't mind me saying. You could then say no Carb or choke too. Quirky character is one thing but if you are going to have smart phone connectivity putting a kickstart on would seem a pointless retro conceit IMO.
@stephenkearney8589
@stephenkearney8589 11 ай бұрын
@@barrydaly7174 A kick-starter is not retro conceit, Barry, but a very practical piece of equipment. Let me itemise the benefits. 1. you can start the bike with a flat battery; I've kick-started my W650 on just 9 volts and pretty well zero amps. 2. A kick-starter is lighter and cheaper than a starter motor and its attendant heavier battery, as illustrated by the Yamaha SR400 3. A kick-starter enables clutch freeing in cold weather 4. A kick-starter eases maintenance; it allows the engine to be turned over slowly, precisely and gradually for maintenance tasks such as adjusting valve clearances. 5. A kick-starter can give an instant feel of general mechanical condition; I once went to buy a very old Honda CD 200 Benly with a suspiciously low recorded mileage but was the seller lying? One prod on the kick-starter with ignition off told me he wasn't - so instead of I walking away I carried on testing and bought the machine. And that m'lud, is the case for the defence. But suppose I am completely wrong? What would it matter if a kick-starter were fitted anyway? It's always good to have a backup. Referring to a kick-starter as "retro conceit" alas, illustrates how so many bikers today have lost sight of the true benefits of the appropriate motorcycle. The bike press over the years has done us a disservice in the types of bikes it has endorsed, often high consumption, high tech gas guzzlers. It doesn't have to be that way
@barrydaly7174
@barrydaly7174 11 ай бұрын
Ok maybe Retro conceit was the wrong phrase unnecessary extra would probably be a better one..... All of that makes me wonder@@stephenkearney8589 Why they bothered removing them in the first place. Maybe 1; There would be very little demand 2: The extra manufacturing cost plus extra weight and raw materials (unless you get rid of electric start altogether and that would be silly) 3 : Much like new cars fewer batteries run flat because of auto switch off's. There are really good, frugal modern bikes most of the Japanese bikes that are less than 1000 CC are very good on gas consumption.

Well done. I rode one of these a month ago. We have just gotten these here in the States. I took a twenty mile ride on a backroad with three S curves. As the bike only had two miles on the clock, I took it easy, but I did ease it up to 65 mph a couple of times. Handling was very good. The front end was solid, but the rear shocks needed to be dialed up a couple of notches. Riding position is ideal for me and the bike held a line nicely in the curves. I really wish , as you stated, that the speedo was in the center. As far as I'm concerned they could offer a model without the Tripper that I won't ever use. BTW, I do have a couple of XL Harleys and my '06 Roadster 1200 is my favorite bike. The new replacement models have been getting dusty on my two local H-D dealers' showroom floors. Certainly the best Enfield yet in my opinion. I have the interceptor and prefer the super meteor now. I don’t think it needs to be metal mudguards and side panel as plastic will cut down the weight and assist performance overall. The main point for the mudguards is that they do the job and keep the mud off the bike so need to be a decent size and not too small. The engine is certainly a great asset.

Great review Freddie. You touched on some good points talking about “purity” of styling. While “pure” is more of a marketing term, I believe you meant simple. If RE would have stuck with simpler styling, reducing the amount of contrasting, and created some simple chrome or silver colorways along with some black colorways, this bike could have made a bigger splash in the vacant pool of cruisers. The wheels are great for the darker, agrresive colorways, but a brighter bike would benefit from some wire spoked wheels. They also can ditch the giant R logo on the case and need another designer to take a look at that side panel. Knowing RE’s tenacity for iteration on design, hopefully we see some of these changes with model updates. It’s a shame so many companies are losing touch with design, especially in the market of affordable and sensible bikes. The world is a better place when more people ride, and bikes like the Super Meteor help get us closer to that world.

Thanks for the thoughtful and OUTSTANDING review! As a Meteor 350 owner, I've been thinking about getting this bike. AFAIAC, it has the Meteor 350's virtues of style, fuel economy, and fun, while also packing more power. For me, this bike is not just a cruiser; it's a performance cruiser; it can and will be fun when the road gets curvy. For me, the last, true performance cruiser was the Hyosung Avatar. Unfortunately, Hyosung hit the US in time for the financial crash of the late 2000s, so the Avatar can't be had here. Now, RE has not only brought out a performance cruiser; they've brought one out that has some style. For me, this bike is unique among cruisers; once again, RE has rediscovered and created a niche all to itself: the performance cruiser. And to offer it at the price RE does? They have WINNER with the Super Meteor! I'd like one in Astral Blue, TYVM... 😀

This week Royal Enfield snuck out some quick shots of the Shotgun. It uses the same frame and engine as the Super but with an 18” front wheel and 17” rear, mid controls and taller rear shocks. The biggest difference is the Sportster style peanut tank. It may be the best Royal Enfield yet!

If the Super Meteor has 90% of the charm of the Classic 350 and is still very manoeuvrable but addresses the issue around lack of power especially going up hill on the 350 and is your ultimate pick from the entire RE range despite your raving review of the Classic 350 then this is really all I need to go on. For me the Classic 350 would be the perfect choice for a Greek Island or similar just cruising around the country roads or along the coast line where you'd rarely if ever want to hit 60mph. Having the Super Meteor 650 for me gives the option to ride it like the Classic 350 (cruising and taking in the scenery) but also gives the option of that extra power should it be needed e.g. long steep hills. Having the extra power doesn't necessarily mean you have to use it all the time but it's nice to know it's there. I'll be picking up the same bike in Interstellar Grey personally based on you review. Thanks for the upload it was extremely helpful

I definitely think should a classic 650 come, they'll take advantage of the probably increased price point to get those aesthetics over the final hurdle when it comes to metal materials and finishes, definitely need spoked wheels

Funny thing that I owned a 1987 883 Sportster for ten years and put almost 40,000 miles on it and never saw it as a cruiser. You sat upright and the pegs were underneath not forward controls. I saw more as a street version of the XR750. In fact mine had high Scrambler pipes. The Super Metor is a lovely bike and the styling is definitely and ergonomics are definitely cruiser like the Triumph Speedmaster. I would consider the Triumph T100 and Sportster 883 similarly but not cruisers. The Triumph Thunderbird from 1995 through the early 2000s was actually better a better Sportster than my 883 Sportster was even after mods. The T100 then followed in the early 2000s and still is filling the shoes of the Sportster in my opinion. The Super Metor is a fine cruiser for all the reasons you stated but it doesn't replace the Sportster the T100 already has that job.

*The Sportster is a chimera bike.* It's been a standard (XLH1200), a cruiser (XL1200L), a bobber (Iron), a cafe racer (XLCR), a chopper (Seventy two), and a post-WW2 custom (Forty-Eight). Some of these styles even existed side-by-side over the years.

@@hulkhatepunybanner Also, the Sportster was the lowest cost entry point to H-D ownership for many, myself included. Between 1993 and 2004, I owned an XL883, an FXRS-SP, an FXRT and also an M2 Cyclone and an XB9R. Then I went to the dark side and changed to owing a BMW (R1150RT "pipe & slippers" edition). Other H-D attempts at alternative entry level bikes don't seem to have sold well here in the UK and I wonder if the new "power cruiser" Sportsters will soon go away as the V-Rods have done.
@hulkhatepunybanner
@hulkhatepunybanner 11 ай бұрын
@@derekp2674 *Yup. The Sportster was the entry bike in the States as well.* The used lots are full of them because H-D marketeers were right about owners wanting to trade up ASAP. (Perhaps after ribbing for having a small Harley.) The new Nightster and Sportster S almost like Harley is copying from Honda's take on what a Harley should look like. Also, US$13,900 isn't an entry level price. H-D does have the X440 models in Asia (US$2,878). Four-forty cc is what parents buy their kids - not what adult newly-minted riders want. This was proven by H-D's defunct Street 500 and 750 models.
@derekp2674
@derekp2674 11 ай бұрын
@@hulkhatepunybanner Wise words indeed. I don't know if the 440s will make it to the UK but the 500s (and Buell Blasts) did not. I think the 750s did but I do not notice any out in the wild. I've see one of their new adventure bikes on the road here, so perhaps H-D are having a go at stealing BMW's customers. Last time they tried that, that gave us the FXRT, which gained a certain following among touring riders.

Hi Freddie & Monika. I started my cruiser journey on the Rebel 500 (chosen over the vulcan at the time) which was ideal to begin with & when I outgrew it I went to the 865 Bonny America (2011), an engine I still love to this day. I dare say if this bike was on the market at the time it would have given the America / Speedmaster a real run for it's money before it upgraded to a 1200 & as you say somewhat $ priced itself out of this market. I'm glad you went to lengths to point out that cruiser riders care less about statistics than they do about aesthetics & the riding experience. Another great video & review...

You are right Freddie! If you like cruisers, then the Super Meteor is a serious middleweight contender. The headlight nacelles can rust from the inside in humid climates, so plastic makes some sense there.

I could not agree more. I have a Sportster for 25 years and now added the Super Meteor to my assembly of motor bikes. Two different characters, but for long distance rides I prefer the Meteor. And even though the nominal power is less, the SM is in fact faster than the 883 Sporty ( not that it matters for cruising).

I had a Sportster 883 and didn't consider it as a cruiser. Mainly because it was uncomfortable as f***. No need to say it was a nightmare for the pillion. The SM650 is not as cool as the Harley, but it can take long trips without any pain for the rider. And that's part of the definition of a cruiser.

Owning a 2004 Sportster 1200 C and ridden the RE SuperMeteor a few times I try to compare them. The RE has the better chassis, suspension and brakes - the gearing matches the engine much better and it has more space for a pillion in the touring version. The Sportster on the other hand has much more torque and low down punch and a lower center of gravity. Cost wise it is a draw - for 8.000,-€ what the RE costs in Germany you could buy a very good used Sportster from the early 2000s with low mileage. Parts cost are high at the HD dealer, but there are tons of aftermarket parts for Sportsters so that they are relatively cheap to keep and easy to maintain. Sportster engines are reliable as and old Mercedes Diesel and normally do 2-300.000mls to the first top end rebuild! If I would get another Sportster I would go for a non rubber mount between 1996 and 2003, because they still had the trap door for easy gearbox rebuild - which models 2004 up lost. On the other hand gearboxes on the 2004 up are not known for typical problems and the rubber mount makes cruising at higher speed more relaxed. My travel speed on German Autobahn is between 120-180km/h with going 150-160km/h all day long behind the windshield. Would I trade my Sportster for a SuperMeteor? - No, but if I would be in the position to buy a bike now it would be a hard time to decide. Styling wise there is much work on the RE - black and chrome mixed in a very uninspired why means that you have to change quite a lot to get a line in this bike… Doing a chrome version with engine casings from the Intercepter and maybe spoke wheels from the new Meteor (2024 model now announced) and maybe chrome a few parts independent would make this bike much nicer …

Spot on Freddie, this is the big problem for Harley with the new models, which look more like a Ducati, though for the Moco it looks their strategy is working as their consolidated numbers say they are improving their financial results… I agree with your review though I’m not sure that all of these improvements you point out are not precisely the reason the Royal Enfields are cheaper than competition, which is actually one of their core strategies. By the way, the day I would not be able to ride my HD CVO Street Glide anymore because of the weight (I’m 52 years young), I reckon I’d rather pick up a Triumph or a Royal Enfield than one of these new Harleys…

Another winner from RE. It says a lot about how good a bike this is when you have to be so picky to find negatives. For me, the speedo on a cruiser should be monochrome (either white on black or black on white/silver). The USB port should be near the handlebars. Most bikes have them under the seat, which is just as ridiculous as under the side panel. The triple clamps, bar risers, switchgear, grips and bar ends on the Super Meteor all add up to a quality, chunky feel and look. Not the best perch for Monika, but maybe a dual seat is available. As usual, a cracking review!
