The first documented recorded of fare paying passengers in the UK (World) using rail was in the Forest of Dean, it's mentioned in an 1810 Act of Parliament regarding a gravity tramline (tramway) from Broadwell near Coleford to Mayhill Wharf on the Forest side of the Wye in Monmouth. Loaded trucks were sent on their way dropping down to Coleford, brakemen would surely have been important on steeper sections but the route was mainly a gradual gradient which included tunnels via Newland, Redbrook, then below Wyesham to arrive at Mayhill, almost the same route as the later Coleford to Monmouth railway. Oxen or cart horses needed to tow the tram carriages back up to Coleford must have travelled down in a carriage, and no doubt people paid to ride back.

Some reason this forest came up while searching back in my family's history with 5 members being knights (there's several more to this date of course). A "royal" forest?? How so?
