Essential viewing for the new defence secretary perhaps. In the 80's those of us who joined in the 60's thought we were becoming a laughing stock, on reflection it looked like the Grand Fleet compared with today's Navy.

They've been getting rid of the country since the 50s in multi generational warfare. Why wouldn't they have been getting rid of it's Navy?

Bit too late for my dads era. His last two ships were HMS Salisbury (out of Plymouth) during the Cod War and HMS Chichester in HK. I remember him weeping during the Falklands campaign as he was besties with the Jaunty on HMS Sheffield

A work colleague of mine has a son who is training to be a submariner. Nearly 90% of that training has been on land. His son has had wait an eternity to get on a sub as there is such few of them and hardly any go to sea.

Failed my GNK, got back classed a week from Anson 08 to Walker 09 in 1979. Thick 😂😂. 3:2 NAMET. Used to need 7:7 just to get through Raleigh. It then went up to 9:9, and everyone thought WTF? I have no idea what it is now.

Nice video showing the time when NATO including the USA were focused on real war and maintaining readiness and the ability to counter any threat.

The really shocking thing is that the whole of Europe's Navies combined would be hard pressed to match what the Royal Navy could deploy in the mid-1980s (let alone anytime before then).

I joined the mob in 85. First ship intrepid 86/88. Then nelson and London. It was a great time. The royal navy is no more. The politicians saw to that. And not one of the senior officers who signed off on the cuts, resigned over it. No, they all went to the boards of the defence companies. These new frigates there building along the road from me ( I'm glasweigen) are a waste of time. No real attack weapons. Point defence mostly. And this bullshit about being fitted for but not carrying certain weapon systems is another cost cutting exercise. Just like when the type 23s were sharing harpoon. It's a fucking embarrassment.
