The living conditions of the soldier were a disgrace….so very third world. Not so for their moneyed, effeminate and languid officers….

Why on earth they closed down Junior Leaders and Apprentices is a mystery to me. There was a campaign group who kept banging on about Child Victims forced into armies in Africa and compared our Junior soldiers to them and the usual loony leftsts.

What makes this all the more real for me is that my father would have been down in the Falklands when this was filmed. He missed the war as he was still working up but he was there just after the end of the war. Lynx flight observer for a 9 month deployment.

How come I missed this career opportunity? It would have been perfect for me. So very boring that nobody, but nobody, would be interested in what you did, and, surely, your 'work' would never, ever, be checked because that would suggest that there was a job even more boring and meaningless than yours. An impossibility, surely?

So wrong. I'm ex Royal Navy 85/92 and the writers were in charge of leave and pay. Fuck up a matelots pay and leave and you soon become a very unpopular member down the mess.

When I did the writers typing course we thought it was john craven with the A now T now voice. My first day in RNSS three lads PVR'd as there wasn't a computer in sight!! It was all manual S106s. BR1950, JSP 101, BR 49 and my absolute fav (not) was the 1066. I had to ring a CPOWTR in Raleigh to tell him he hadn't read the 8748. He put the phone down, my CPO came out and threw one at me, with the words " love from Raleigh "!!

Surely this film by the captions is 1914 not 1913!
@Hants_Prints
@Hants_Prints Күн бұрын
The majority was filmed in 1913, put together with the captions after the outbreak of War for the purposes of recruitment in cinemas (although not released) if we had said 1914 we would have has people say "well that ship was decommissioned before the war" 🤷

@@bertiewooster3326 Technically, no. The political entity that was created by the Acts of Union 1798 was the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland - it was the navy of the UK, not "England's navy". "Britain" only refers to the British mainland, and "Great Britain" is not mentioned in the film at all. Plus, @03:28 "England's call to all her sons..." might fall on deaf ears outside of England. I enjoyed the film, but it is very English-parochial, reflecting the period, and still true to some extent today.

Much of the work is now done on computers, but we still used the analogue systems alongside for redundancy. An EMP could disable a computer network, but the plastic brain on the wall with all the chinagraph writing will still be able to provide you with the information required.

Certainly better than they would today mate in the 1970s the RAF had over 1000 Frontline aircraft. With about 100,000 personnel round the world today under 30,000. Today about 200 aircraft serviceable and virtually no overseas posting and all run by woke earpieced tattooed Air Marshals. I know.

5:04 she's a doll! I really enjoy these programs, seeing how things used to be. The Officer's Mess was pretty amazing to me; was it really like that, being served? Is it still like that? It does show how much work and coordination is necessary for all Air Force's flights; it's not just jump in and go.

@@bertiewooster3326 I’ve left seven years and the traditional idea of the Mess, both Officer’s and the WO/Sergeant’s Mess died at least 15 years before that. Various reasons but quality for what you paid for was one reason. Family life first was probably the greatest reason in the majority of cases.

My grandfather CPO Charlie Wright was at Ganges sometime after the war. He had served in both wars and was called up yet again after WW2. Not sure when he was a Ganges but, apparently, was a complete bastard. In between the wars he was the tour manager for the All Blacks, amongst other things. Like so many men, the Navy was his life and he was ill prepared for Civvy Street.
