Good to see UK working with allies. We need to get the Royal Marines BACK to a minimum of 3 Regiments with Arctic Training School and Jungle Training School. The British Army is understrength by about 35-45,000 and lacks MBTs. RAF needs 140 Typhoons NOW!
@admiraljellicoe9268
@admiraljellicoe9268 Жыл бұрын
The only reason we "lack" as u say it MBTs is because we are not meant to have an overwhelming tank force since we will rely on France and Germany and to compensate for that were getting 148 new challenger 3. Instead our defence budget is spent on naval forces and air force. And why need more euro fighters when each typhoon can carry the very capable meteor missile

You seem to forget as part of NATO we are obliged to provide front line defense as much as other EU countries. How does the size and weight of the containers compare to Harpoon? Easy to replace 1 for 1 ?
@Akm72

I haven't looked up the exact weight or dimensions but it's in the same basic size and weight class (actually NSM is a bit smaller) so there shouldn't be an issue.
@MacKay1812
@MacKay1812 Жыл бұрын
Its nearly 300kg lighter and does not have the hitting power of Harpoon with a blast about half the size, but Harpoon can easily be shot down by a reasonably advanced enemy where as NSM is difficult to detect in the first place because it is stealth. So in theory the first thing the enemy will know about it is it blasting through the side of their ship! China has shown that they have respect for NSM.

It is not going to replace tomahawk. Both cost about the same. The British only use the Tomahawk from their SSN's torpedo tubes. Tomahawk has a range over 1000 miles and it can be fired from strike length VLS or torpedo tubes or the new land based launcher that the USA is developing.

I always thought it's either Harpoon ER or Exocet b3c. But anyway, every time I hear a contract of NSM, coupled with the appearance of Seabreaker & similar, it makes me think no one will ever buy the Harpoon ER
@AB-gi3qy
@AB-gi3qy Жыл бұрын
NSM is way more modern than Harpoon and Exocet. In this day and age and going forward a against peer level opponent you either need a stealthy missile or one that is supersonic in order to reduce the time an enemy has to react.
@watermirror
@watermirror Жыл бұрын
@@AB-gi3qy not necessarily. NSM is still detectable as they get closer to the target ship, so no difference. While NSM is undetectable flying high at a distance, the Harpoon & Exocet follow a sea-skimming route, so both class are still hard to detect. So Harpoons and Exocet are still much relevant. More like the UK aimed for a missile that doesn't need midcourse updates
@AB-gi3qy
@AB-gi3qy Жыл бұрын
@@watermirror NSM is a sea skimming missile too, much like Harpoon and Exocet however it will be detected much later due to its stealthy design. The NSM also uses passive sensors unlike the Harpoon and Exocet which both use active radar that gives off emissions. The most modern Harpoon and Exocet versions are still very dangerous however they are more easily countered by a modern enemy.
@watermirror
@watermirror Жыл бұрын
@@AB-gi3qy I know NSM's features since it's in the public domain. The point is that NSM can just fly high in order to detect radio emissions from enemy ships & then just follows that path (thus no need for satellites or aircraft for midcourse updates). And because its steathy, the enemy ships will have a hard time detecting it at that distance. Sea-skimming is optional for NSM. The radar horizon is only ~25 km from the ship, so its radar will still likely detect NSM, esp against high-end radars, esp against high-frequency radar bands (C & X). Tho I don't know which band/s NSM is designed to counter (I'm guessing that's classified). But even so, as it gets nearer, the clearer it is from the ship's radar ( + the EO IR sensors) where SRSAMs, then vshorad missiles is specially made to operate

@@Akm72 That makes sense---as long as it actually happens that way. RN hull numbers are much too small. If the country really doesn't have the money to do a buildout with the currently planned designs (T26, 31, and 32) the RN should revisit the Black Swan sloop of war concept and build an updated version. This would be the fastest and most affordable way to get to the kind of fleet that is needed, especially in view of AUKUS and the threat from China.

This is good news for the Royal Navy, but it is the cheap version of the Tomahawk Missile System. When will the MOD realise that buying cheap is not always in the UK's interests? When I was leaving the Royal Navy I went to an open day with the defense logistics organisation and I walked out in disgust because they stood up and told us all how much money they saved the Navy. This came after years and years of struggling with the systems we had. Ex Chief Petty Officer RN.
