The only thing I struggle with is the concept of our involvement it trying to manifest the kingdom. The "pull up your socks and get on with it" concept. Paul was talking about Christ living in him and not him trying to live christ.

Yes I agree its not our own efforts , its about inviting, zllowing God the Holy Spirit to work in us and through us. I know I am amazed at how fluently I speak when that happens . I could never speak like that on my own. It is things Ive been taught or read , but it comes out anointed. Whether Im sharing the gospel , praying generally , or praying for someones healing. Sharing a dream or a vision etc. On my own I couldnt speak at all , but I speak with an authority not my own. When we speak in tongues we give up authority over our voice , its th e same. K

I do agree with essentially everything I heard here and I think it's wonderful in that it helps us to see God's story clearly and the goal of History. the question I have is the role of the judg.ent of God upon sinners in this. like he said we talk about atonement I relationship to the theme of final judgment whereas the scriptural background is the restoration of mankind to the realize his purpose as the image of God. where does the judgment fit into the narrative? it can't be denied that it is apart of the divine revelation. The story is not complete without that reality. I don't think the idea of God as a judge who threatens judgment upon idol worshipers is pagan. It's a part of the biblical narrative.

Agree with your analysis and is one the criticism against NT Wright. I just don't think that is he main focus. Like many teachers, they have an area of specific focus. Does not mean they don't believe in real judgment. Just my two cents.

The west miss the atonement rite because they dont have the meal sacrifice rite idea. It was called the guilt offering rite, or the kapparah rite in jewish imagery. It's like visiting your grandfather, or in our case the Grand Father in heaven. The Emperor, being Son of Heaven, offers himself a sacrifice for all (for all men), bringing all in his domain in union with Heaven in a meal with the Grand Father. It's like you as a head of the family bringing food to a party -- a symbol of goodwill, and desire for relationship. The difference is in our case, God Himself gave us the offering of reconcilliation, which turns the idea over it's head as if now it is God Himself who calls us to the relationship meal.

He is trying real hard to integrate ancient understanding with his previous understanding here. Only it comes off as being an erroneous lesson in how mankind only exists for the creation, instead of the creation for man. He speaks of "pagan" ways of viewing the world...and he has himself adopted evolution and now it seems nature worship into his theology. sigh...

Wright confuses the covenants, attributing to carnal Israel those blessings that only belong to spiritual Israel. The Mosaic covenant was conditional upon the nation's obedience, it was a typical covenant that pointed toward the new covenant in Christ. The benefits of the new covenant did not come into play only after Jesus's death but have always been applicable to those of faith. In the book he tells us that the shed blood represents not death, but life released. This was put to bed by Leon Morris's The Apostolic Preaching of the Cross. Wright nowhere engages with such scholars. Again, he draws a distinction between sin being condemned in Jesus' flesh and Jesus the person. So while sin was condemned in his flesh, Jesus was not condemned. Is it possible, however, to separate the two? I think not. It was Jesus the person who died upon the cross, a death that was itself a punishment for sin. Whilst Wright is very eloquent, he is essentially falsifying the teaching of Scripture.

(Leviticus and Hebrews) And, yes, God condemned sin in the flesh of the Messiah just like Scripture says explicitly (Romans 8:1-4) Your line of thinking would lead to the logical conclusion that God became man to punish Himself for our sins. How does that conclusion map on to the meaning of baptism and communion (Lord's supper)?

Wright offers a very messed up understanding of the covenants. He also has a deficient understanding of the meaning of shed blood. Perhaps he should read Leon Morris's The Apostolic Preaching of the Cross.

I can see why people say this, given his omissions regarding the atonement of the Messiah and it’s OT background, but I wouldn’t say he’s a false teacher. He, like the other side, have blind spots in his theology. He’s essentially eviscerated the wrath of God from the cross of Christ, as if God putting Messiah forward wasn’t a propitiation for sins, to demonstrate God’s righteousness. The other side have eviscerated the other mysteries of the cross-i.e., the disarming of the powers of darkness and principalities, etc.-and the goal of history moving towards the new creation. Both of these things are true and ought to be emphasised.
