It seems that I mispronounced the word 'Sliotar' (pronounced more like 'sli-tter' or 'shli-tter'). I apologise unreservedly for the mistake and I made the relevant correction with an annotation in the video, literally a day after I uploaded it.. Can people PLEASE STOP disliking the video because I mispronounced one single word? It seems a little harsh. UPDATE: Any comments relating to the pronunciation of this word WILL BE DELETED. I'm sick of having to justify myself to people who clearly can't read the giant red annotation in the video or this comment.

If anyone is disliking due to that, then it is ridiculous, you did a fantastic job explaining it in a concise way. There's been recent rule changes with the black card being introduced, but you covered the core of the game i feel. Mentioning the tribalism aspect, of people representing their local county only, would be good to touch on next time, or even the ancient history of it being played by warriors.

Cú Chulainn I agree it's a good vid explaining the rules all things considered. The black card btw was only introduced in Gaelic Football, not in hurling. However in hurling the rules on taking a penalty have been changed: A penalty in hurling is now just one on one with the goalkeeper, and the ball must be struck outside 20m. Where before you lifted the ball with your hurl at 20 metres and could steal a couple of yards before hitting the ball.

Cú Chulainn Thanks for the comments. Yes, I seem to have a few dislikes because of one mispronounced word. And as soon as I wrote that post explaining that I got it wrong, I got another 2 dislikes almost instantly. A little harsh me thinks. But I'm glad you found this video informative, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)

sam nunn well hurling is part of the GAA which also governs gaelic football ,which would be well known in australia due to the international rules series.Hurling has a crossover with scottish shinty rather than australia,which doesnt have anything similar and as result hurling would not be well known in australia

+Higginsamerica Ya thats a big problem all right in gaelic football aswell and thats why the game doesnt grow in the US.The american player has difficulty in developing their skills then.The GAA frown on the practice,but its seems to ingrained in clubs over there.A lot of intercounty players go to america for a few games after their team is Knocked out in the earlier rounds and are handsomely awarded for doing so.One of cousins went over their for a few summers playing football and reckons the standard is actually higher in america than the club scene in his own county,

My best friend immigrated last week to Ireland from South Africa and he sent me a pic in a pub earlier today... behind him is a photo against the wall of the Waterford senior hurlers.. I was so intrigued about what hurlers are that I looked it up and I am astounded that I have simply NEVER heard of this incredibly amazing sport! I will be watching hurling from here on out and will try to learn more about it as I go along. Thank you for a very well presented video. I will be looking at the leagues and will choose a team to support from South Africa.

Odd i've seen the Camanachd final on youtube there seemed to be a paltry crowd at it.Hurlings equivalent gets eighty thousand attending every year.Maybe people are mad about shinty in a part of scotland,but it can't enjoy widespread sport with only 5000 at its showpiece event.Its a fine game though and anyway if your local team plays it its going to better game than hurling ,because they don't play hurling and vice versa in ireland if your local team plays hurling thats a better game than anything else.

Great job in explaining Hurling Ninh from an Irish man still playing the game. It is not easy to explain as I have found out many times when trying to explain to foreign friends. One or 2 small things I would advise on is that, a puck is not necessarily a restart in play, it is just hitting the ball with the stick(like the word kick in soccer). However when the goalkeeper restarts the play we say 'puck out'. An important point is that if the ball is hit wide by an attacker the goalkeeper gets a 'puck out' from his hands, not from the ground from the square in front of the goal, not from the 65m line. However, if the ball gets hit wide by a defender(on his own goal side) the attacking team gets a 'free puck' or commonly known as a '65' from the 65m line to try and score (generally a point). Also when the ball goes over the either side line the play is restarted with a 'sideline cut' we wouldn't really ever say 'puck' in this situation. A 'free puck' is not generally called that (however it is correct to say so) we generally say 'free-in' aka for the attacking team or 'free-out' for the defending team. Also in relation to a penalty or 'penalty puck' the rules have now changed. The reason being is that the players' are after developing a way to scoop the ball up and strike it from such close range that it could do serious damage to the defending players, now only the goalkeeper will defend the penalty. Check out videos of the Cork goalkeeper Anthony Nash and you'll see why(incredible power and technique) kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKKWmIiFqd-GgpI You did a great job Ninh. If the above seems pedantic I just wanted to add a bit of value to it. Not to offend or demean your good work :)

The reason these videos work is because it covers the bare-bones in less than 5 minutes. If I was to go into any great detail like that, it would be unwatchable. Thanks again for the comments! :)

Hi Ninh, yes I understand that and that's why I think it's a great video. Some of my points of terminology are just extras to add value, and the rule change obviously isn't relevant to the video just an FYI to the audience. However, the only obvious equivocation is at 2:27 where it says that 'if the ball is hit wide by an attacker the defending team gets a puck out at the 65m line. This is not the case, if the ball is hit wide by an attacker the defending team's goalkeeper gets a puck out from the small square directly in front of the goal. Keep up the good work buddy. Delighted to see you enjoy our nations games and are spreading the message of such a great and ancient sport :)

I understand the rules but was curious about your research. Really enjoyed it. After a player has bounced the ball twice off his hurley instead of passing it if he wishes,he can then bounce it from ground back to stick and start again,being allowed to once again bounce two off his stick. This can be done indefinitely. Thanks for the video. Hope I was a little helpful

+lorcan O'Reilly Thanks man, I appreciate the back up! And yes, a few people have suggested International Rules, but seeing as though it's mainly an exhibition sport and it's not played at an amateur or professional level anywhere, there seems little point in making a video about it. Nice idea though. Thanks for stopping by. Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)

Wow wow wow!!! Great job. Now I know a lot about the rules of Gaelic Football and Hurling. Thank you :) Seems like a great sport and a lot of skills are required to play Hurling. In fact, a lot more skillful a player has to be in Hurling than in Gaelic Football. I think it's a lot more interesting than hockey... And yeah, I hope that all the on field players including the referees wear abdomen guards! :P
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 9 жыл бұрын
Hi Arka Sarkar (again) Believe it or not, the only protection they wear is a helmet with a face cage. They don't wear padding anywhere else and if they get hit - it probably hurts!
@Arka2011

Ninh Ly Oops! Is it? Are you sure they don't wear an abdomen guard? In fact in cricket, batsmen, wicket keeper and any fielder while fielding at silly point or short leg (if required) wear abdomen guard. Also in hockey, players wear them too...

Arka Sarkar Check it out: www.gaa.ie/coaching-and-games-development/rules-and-specifications/rules-of-specifications/equipment/ Some people may wear them, but I'm pretty sure most don't as it's not mandatory.

Today I heard about this sport for the first time, I've watched a few videos and I loved it. I used to play field hockey, and I see many rules that are similar to hockey. I don't know why soccer/football is such a big deal around the word when there certainly are much interesting and challenging sports out there. One question, do women also play this sport? Are there any women's league in Ireland? Or can this sport be played by men and women all together? That'd be awesome.
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 5 жыл бұрын
They do play a version of this game called 'Camogie' - which is played only by women. It's virtually the same with a few rules changes. Men and women generally don't play together because of this. Glad you like this video, be sure to subscribe and check out my channel for more like this.

Yes I watched it on a feed here in the U.S. and in all places South Florida North Miami to be exact I am half Irish and I was immediately transfixed by the play of this game and the announcers were talking at one point in the play of the match about a blood point the gentleman in the video did not say anything about it would you care to elaborate on it or did I just hear something else during the match I am interested in the game and would like to be educated on the nuances of the game. It would be helpful on another point why hasn't the NFL been interested in playing in Ireland once instead of Mexico or the U.K. I think it would be great and it would probably open up Hurling to new fans across the globe I think it should be in the Olympics they have just about every other sport in the world in it personally I would rather watch that than Ice curling

Helmet's used to not be mandatory up to 2010 (2007 for those 21 and under). I imagine a lot of coaches already enforced them with underage teams though. I had to get one when I played as a kid, pretty sure I was forced to get one by the club.
