Why Irish Hurling Is the Fastest Game on Grass

Great Big Story

4 жыл бұрын

Hurling is the national sport of Ireland. It’s the fastest game on grass. An ancient sport, it’s kind of like lacrosse, and it’s kind of like American football. But, really, it’s unlike any other sport. Hurling is uniquely Irish, and it takes strength, speed and stamina to play well. Danny Cullen is captain of his county’s team in northwest Ireland. He is descended from a long line of hurlers. For men like him, hurling isn’t simply a sport they play for fun. It’s about keeping an Irish tradition alive.

It was unfortunate that he didn’t live long enough to see his childhood game again at Yankee Stadium. He would have loved it! 😥

As an American Lacrosse player, I find the full-body dynamic of this really interesting and engaging. Lacrosse is much more focused on your mastery of the tool than it is anything else; you practice both hands with the stick, dodges with the stick, shot angles and spots with the stick, checks with the stick, etc. The way this encompasses the whole body, particularly the focus on hand play and working that into movement is awesome. Great stuff.

i spent 10 days in dublin on a business trip in 2007, and randomly one night i happened to change the channel and there was HURLING being shown, and i was like "wtf?!"...lol, and then i was utterly hooked after 30 seconds, and watched like 4 hours, into the early morning. it was the munster championships, though i didn't know it at the time, and it was so amazing! the speed, and power, and skill, and bravery, it was the best sport i'd ever seen. back then they didn't wear helmets though, and they were *crackin'* each others' hands with their stick things, and just laying people out with hits. and then some dude would sprint 50m bouncing a ball on his stick, avoiding whacks from opponents, and then just rip a 50m pass to some other dude who'd grab it outta the air, spin, then laserbeam it into the goal and the crowd would go nits...shit was crazy! dopeass sport.

Lovely to finally have a video that tried to explain the passion involved in hurling, a video that shows how much of 'responsibility' it is for irish people to represent where they come from, the pride it brings to a community to have a good hurling team and to keep these beautiful traditions alive. Where I'm from every other pastime is overlooked apart from hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, Irish dancing, and traditional Irish music. They are literally all that matters. There is a girl who lives near me who is on the irish woman's rugby team, and no one cares, they just look at her and dont see it as an achievement they just think of her as disloyal to her community and to her heritage.

I recall seeing some hurling on the telly (a final on World of Sport, maybe) many, many years ago. One lad got a hurley broken across his face (no helmets then) and hit the deck hard. He got up, shook his head a bit, spat the blood out and was running about like a spring lamb in moments. This isn't a game for the faint of heart or worry about getting a few knocks.

I grew up in Canada playing Lacrosse and Hockey. I had a pretty small frame so got tossed around quite a bit but loved it when I was not in pain. ....the older I got the bigger my teammates got ( and my adversaries ) and so I with regret was taken out of Lacrosse and I started boxing. I thought because I played hockey and such that I was in good shape. Nope. I got beat up for ten years but I loved it. Every one around you is getting beat up as well and you're finding a way to push through. That's how I relate to sports like hurling and really enjoy and respect it.

Daud Aliyafie Well there is a concern about participation, but thats due to migration patterns from country to city more so than other sports. GAA sports which also include gaelic football aswell as hurling have been the most popular sports for 3 years according to surveys on 24% followed by football /soccer on 14% and rugby on 13%. Although the GAA is not just hurling the other sport Gaelic has become very boring with the dominance of dublin so logically hurling is largely responsible for the poularity of the GAA
