FOOTNOTES - As you can tell, I'm working overtime to crank out content for you guys to watch, especially due to this Coronavirus situation. I'M THIS CLOSE TO 100K SUBSCRIBERS - so please help me out by sharing my content! - I had a recent influx of enquiries for this sport by my fans. And I'd just watched 'The Hustler', starring Paul Newman. Some of his most quotable lines are from that film, so it inspired me to make this video. - Before any unimaginative souls try and make the 'gay pool' joke, about 30 other people made that 'joke' before you. It's kinda lame if you're late to the party with that one. - I can see why people love this game, and I can also see why people hate this game. If you don't like it, that's fine because you're entitled to your opinion. But don't be a douche in the comments section - you really don't come across as cool as you think you do.

Straight pool was Willie Mosconi's game. When he ran his 526 balls he did it during a straight pool match. Willie won and just kept on shooting setting his extremely long standing record. Recently, there have been a couple people to beat this record but this wasn't done in conjuction with a match and they used a videocamera where they had as many attempts as they wanted. Willie did this in one try.

@@NinhLyUK It's not as common. Over here, most play by pub rules. But there are tournaments, and I like the game as a game of pool can be over sometimes to quick. One of my favorite table sports. My sister worked at a cafe and I’d always play a game with myself. Had some different rules which some traditionalists might say are sacrilege, but I was a kid. Lol -Number on the ball was equal to the points you get when you sink it, (ie, sink the 15 ball, get 15 points, etc) -All balls are fair game, no Stripes/Solids only (although I did play some versions where said rule applied) -You must declare your shot, but any pocket is fair game. . Fouls: Scratch: -1 point Hitting the wrong ball, accidentally or otherwise: -2 points Jumper, ie the que ball bouncing before the break: -3 points Any part of the body touching the felt other than your wrist/arm: -4 points Sinking the 8 ball prior to all other balls: -5 points Once all balls were sunk, that’s a round, and you go for a series of rounds. Highest points at the end of the rounds, wins. Typically it was a best of 3 with some “larger” tournaments going best of 7.

@@ThePolerbearproducts Some of those rules are actually the proper rules for 61 Rotation pool, especially the part where the ball number is the value of points earned for sinking it. The first to get 61 points (the majority of the 120 available points) wins. It is, of course, a rotation game where the must make first contact with the lowest numbered ball left on the table, but with combination shots allowed (like most other forms of pool), one can actually score enough points to win with just 5 balls pocketed, though that does require something of a lucky break (a term that actually originates in pool) .It hasn't been relevant in a over century, mind you, having been supplanted by other pool games that were considered more balanced, such as the 14.1 straight pool discussed here.

On the opening break, can a person break the balls by banking or kicking the cue into the rack? I played years ago, and the only break shot I knew about was hitting the front balls gently pushing the ball to your pocket. This guy I just met kicks the cue off the long rail, throwing half the rack to his side and calls it legal. Thanks for your help. I'm sorry, that was a one pocket question.

Best explanation of straight pool I've seen and perfectly timed because I've been playing pool in my basement during quarantine. However, I have a few questions: Are there points deducted if you pocket a ball in the wrong pocket, or sink the wrong object ball? Everything I was reading suggested suggested these balls were spotted and there were no point penalties. Also, and this happened to me a few times during play, if I call one ball but accidentally sink two, do I get still get a point for the one I called and then just lose my turn, spotting the uncalled ball? Thanks!
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 4 жыл бұрын
I'm to believe that there is a point penalty if it is the wrong ball. In the 2nd scenario - it happened in the video. Shane van Boening sinks the cue ball, the object ball and another ball. Both balls were spotted and he was deducted a point. Opponent also got ball in hand because of the cue ball.

If you fail to hit sink ball or foul you lose your turn. But if don’t intend to sink any ball, you must call a “safety”. But if you do intend to sink a ball, and call it, and don’t sink the ball, you lose your turn. So...what’s the point of calling a safety? Do you get to keep your turn?
@Duffyyy94
@Duffyyy94 Жыл бұрын
The only reason to verbally announce a safety is b/c in a call shot game, like straight pool or even 10 ball, if you plan on not making a ball, and you try to lock the cue ball up so that your opponent will have no shot when they come to the table (i.e. a good safety), you don't want to accidently make a ball while executing the safety. If you were to play a safe, not call safe, and a ball happened to go in, your opponent could force you to shoot again, since you didn't call safe and you made a ball that you did not call. For instance, if the cue ball is in a really bad spot, like wedged against the rack, and you didn't call safe but made a ball accidently, you definitely do not want your opponent to give it back to you, which they can if you didn't call safe and they believe it is better to let you shoot again rather than playing a difficult shot. Calling safe just means that no matter if you make a ball or not, your opponent must shoot next.

On a subsequent break, when you are racking 14 balls, what are the rules? I know it's normal to pocket the 15th ball and carom the cue into the racked balls, but is that required? Can you pocket the 15th ball and not touch the 14 racked balls? If you do not pocket a ball, do two object balls and the cue need to hit a rail? If I pocket the 15th ball and leave the 14 racked balls untouched, can I then play safe on the 14 with only one ball needing to hit a rail? I know this isn't typical but is it legal?
@alexparxy
@alexparxy 2 жыл бұрын
In any subsequent rack, it would be legal to solely pocket the ball left out of the rack (provided you call it, of course) and leave the 14 racked balls untouched, although it wouldn’t be of any advantage to you if you were looking to continue a run. The ‘two plus the cue’ rule, that is, two balls and the cue ball must each be driven to a rail after the cue ball contacts the rack, only applies to the opening break shot. On every other shot, if no called ball is pocketed, at least one ball has to be driven to a rail after the cue ball legally contacts an object ball to be legal. So, whilst you could pocket the loose ball and then play safe afterwards, it isn’t ideal, as you would still need to break the rack open to a certain extent, allowing your opponent to get to the table and start running ball after ball. Hope this isn’t too confusing

On the opening break (when all 15 are racked) two numbered balls must hit a rail. It doesn’t matter if the cue ball hits a rail or not. On all other shots, either the cue ball or an object ball must hit a rail after the cue ball strikes the object ball. When 14 balls are racked, it is considered a regular shot (not a break shot).

New to straight pool and haven't watched many pro games of it. But if youget both balls in the rack space and get a full rack to break why do most pool pros not try and get a full rack? Do you get a point for any ball dropped on a full rack? Obviously it's unintentional or can't be called.

Regarding the first question; play passes to your opponent after every time you call a safety, with all balls pocketed on a safety being spotted. As for the second; any balls made in addition to the one called ball count towards the shooter’s score. So, if you were to call a ball, and make three other balls in addition to the one you called, you would score four points

I would love to see a Rules of Bumper Pool video, but I doubt it'll happen. To my knowledge there isn't a pro league and, like Monopoly, there's so many house rules out there that a large number of people think they're using the real rules but aren't. No lie, if you find a "how to play bumper pool" video on here, odds are they got at least one rule wrong.

If you fail to pot, but did not call a safety, what happens scorewise?
@Duffyyy94
@Duffyyy94 Жыл бұрын
Nothing, table turns over to your opponent.
@Stellarffxi
@Stellarffxi 3 жыл бұрын
What's the point of calling a safety in straight pool? Does it work the same as 8 ball where if you pocket a ball, you forfeit your turn? Gotta admit, I never understood the point of calling a safety in 8 ball when there's no called pocket for the object ball... it doesn't change anything.
@raygrinders3918
@raygrinders3918 3 жыл бұрын
I agree completely. Declaring a safety is mostly an advanced apology to opponents who think it is dirty pool to not try to get a ball into a pocket on every turn. There are cases, however, where the shooter wants to pocket a ball on a safety so that he doesn't have to shoot again in that turn. This applies to call-pocket games, and in straight pool all pocketed balls are spotted. A safety shooter who is silent may still be accused of shooting an obvious shot, making the called pocket "obvious", too, forcing him to shoot again.

The explanation of the lag is inaccurate: the winner of the lag doesn't break, they get to choose who breaks. The winner almost always chooses to have their opponent break, since it's a called-shot game and the first shot is usually defensive. This is what happened during the match used as example material for this video; Shane wins the lag, Billy breaks.
