Bjorn I’m of Japanese heritage but 4th generation in the USA. You are more in tune with the Japanese aesthetic and culture than I am. I have always admired your work and your great teaching videos. You are going to the heart of Japanese aesthetic and culture in the jewel that Kyoto is. You will bring new blood to Japanese bonsai with a fresh modern western perspective. That can only make bonsai art even better. Much success to you and your family.

I was hoping to come visit you in Nashville but I understand why you are moving. Actually, I am envious. Well, I've always wanted to visit Kyoto. Maybe I will visit you there someday. My former English professor at college loved Kyoto and I saw many photos of the Zen gardens there and heard stories about it thanks to him. I've had flight layovers in Osaka and Tokyo when traveling to and from China and a couple times was tempted to take the bullet train to Kyoto but was concerned I wouldn't make it back in time for my early morning departure flight the next day.

Bjorn, I just discovered you on KZbin…. Exceptional work and quality videos…. I hope that you will continue your KZbin productions from Japan, as I will be most interested. My wife and I will be taking a guided tour of Japan 2042 , June 21-July 6 ( last three days in Kyoto)… Hopefully, we will have the opportunity to visit some master Japanese bonsai gardens while there.I have been interested in bonsai for a good 40 years ( 75 years old), but most of that time on a cursory level. However, I’ve had a Procumbens Nana for 35 years. I bring it to a local nursery ( Bonsai West, Littleton, Massachusetts) for the winter months, where I also get the opportunity to work with Mike, the owner, and Zuma, a true bonsai artist. In fact, Zuma named my tree, Little Red Dragon, for its shape and red bark. Now, at 75, I am more excited than ever… Zuma thinks that I should just concentrate on the dragon, and refinement ( with him) over the winter months. I will bequeath the dragon to Zuma to keep it going, hopefully, for many generations. It is hard not to work multiple trees. If I were younger, I would. Arigatou gozaimasu for your inspiration, and best of luck to you and to your family. Ciao, John😅

That came out of the blue for me! Sounds like the right thing to do though. First of all, I can’t believe the courage you have, leaving everything you built for the last 5 years behind. That being said, you’re family comes first. Since I am European it’s funny to me how you had to tread lightly around the subject of the US education system. As far as the public school system goes, most major economies have a far better overall education (not hating, you all know what it is). Makes complete sense to me to move for that reason. I also think bringing in the Japanese professionals for Bonsai-U is a genius move. All the best, I’m excited for what’s coming! ✌🏻

Great decision, sell all your trees, start new! Try to get out of the bubble of your admirers, get as much critical feedback as possible. Do not only focus on teaching others, focus more on teaching yourself. Delve deeper into caligraphy and ink painting. Spend as much time as possible in japanese gardens, monasteries and nature. It's wonderful to hear about your plans, Bjorn, to return to Japan in 2024 and establish Eisei-en Kyoto Bonsai Garden. Your decision to bring your expertise and fresh Western perspective to the Japanese bonsai scene is both exciting and promising. It's this kind of cross-cultural exchange that can lead to innovative approaches and enrich the art of bonsai. As you embark on this new chapter, I encourage you to fully re-immerse again yourself in the unique and rich bonsai culture of Japan. Let's collaborate with local bonsai professionals and enthusiasts that will undoubtedly yield valuable insights and contribute to the continued growth of bonsai as an art form. Moreover, I'd like to extend an invitation for us to meet again and visit us in Saitama City, when you have the opportunity. It would be a pleasure to catch up and discuss the exciting developments in the world of bonsai. See you soon and good luck!
