For me, this whole situation made me understand "separating an artist from its work". It's something I never understood until I felt in my flesh that the good morals and values taught to me by Kenshin's story are completely separate from the despicable actions of his creator. Rurouni Kenshin taught me nothing but good things, so I'll never be ashamed of loving it.

Yes, some flaws are worse than others, but if we put every single artist (no matter what industry) under a microscope and “canceled” every single one for every flaw they have, the list of supportable artists would be very, VERY short. To shame someone for liking something that a flawed person created is the very definition of asinine. Shoot, if you want an entertaining exercise, name some of your favorite works. I’m sure on at least a few of them, you’ll probably be able to find some sort of dirt on its creator. Maybe not child exploitation levels of bad, but still bad.

It's frustrating, honestly. It's THE anime that got me into anime. I am glad I was unaware when I watched it, because otherwise, I'd have missed out on a story that truly touched my soul. It's hard to set it apart from the controversy, and I understand both sides.

So unfortunately I think if I was to link sources to this video we'd end up with issues, so I can't. that said there's plenty of information out there for people who would like to learn more about Japanese culture. I want to reiterate that this isn't a condemnation of the people of Japan. Everyone is different, none of what I said should be applied to every single person in a country, much of this is referring to the over-all social norms of a country, not the people. People don't make laws or decisions for a nation. I legitimately love Japan, but every civilization has it's issues. I do want to put in an addendum: people are dynamic. Watsuki has a deep dark side to him, obviously, but having experienced his books, it feels as if he put all of his “good” in them. Idk how to better express that and I don’t feel that it changes anything or makes a point, but I suppose it’s nice that it exists🤷 idk

The type of crime Watsuki committed is one where I can’t imagine what sufficient recourse looks like because the victims are so numerous and the crime is reliant on both individual perpetrators and the system that hurts people and the social factors that enable it. I think the way we view crime makes it difficult to prevent future crime because we think of it as a thing only truly monstrous people can do. The closest analogous example I can think of is R. Kelley. Obviously R Kelley has a history of predatory behavior that was called out at the time. And there are other dynamics at play that I am not qualified to talk about at length (see Intelexual Media for a good breakdown). At the same time, a lot of his behaviors were enabled or overlooked or written off as preferences. Doesn’t change that it was wrong whether he was picking teens at the mall or taping 13 yo. It’s just that his behavior does not exist in a vacuum. Black teenaged girls are treated like adults and over-sexualized from a young age. His behavior was allowed to escalate for too long and he was only held accountable after people started re-examining how predatory behavior was treated in the last 15-20 yrs. And after he wasn’t profitable anymore. Again, it’s one of the worst crimes someone can commit.

I spent a few years in prison and was absolutely ostracized by a lot of my fellow general population guys because I refused to treat the S.Os as less than human, but I'm not capable of jumping on that fuckin' "shoot these monsters, end them all" bandwagon(also, while the other gen pop guys were buying meds for recreation, the SOs were holding massive magic the gathering tournaments and playing D&D. Which scene would you choose? lol). Yeah, there are people with truly despicable ways of thinking and there's no help for a person that doesn't want to help themselves, but at the end of the day none of these guys ASKED to be what they were. I may not have hurt somebody sexually, but I've dealt with pornography addiction(which is destroying our young men in the modern era in almost every country), and it FUCKED my head up. ruined my relationships, destroyed my ability to make love with a woman. I went towards rougher more violent sex, but some of the guys I knew inside were(unsurprisingly) 4chan dwellers who came across underage pornography for the first time there, and it's been described to me as an "oxy addict finding out pure opium exists". There's no denying the people hurt most by sex crimes are the victims, and they should absolutely be prioritized. But by simply thinking "throw the monsters away and throw away the key" we are denying that the perpetrators are human beings that had to make many leaps to get to the point where they were willing to hurt someone or download underage pornography. You know what I heard most often when I would ask these guys "Why didn't you try to get help"? I heard "I was afraid that it would get out." I heard "I don't think there's any help for us." I heard "I'd rather admit to killing someone than hurting a kid." And that's just it: we're afraid to talk about it because it makes us feel icky. You understand how fucked up that is? We ACTIVELY refuse to look for an effective solution, we actively refuse to prevent people from becoming victims, we actively refuse to help people before they CREATE victims. Because we're afraid to talk about it, and because of the widespread advent of porn addiction, we're about to make the problem worse than it's ever been before. I learned, there's no such thing as good people, no such thing as bad people. We aren't our pasts, and we aren't what we could be in the future. We are what we are now, and that's all that should matter when it comes to judging whether or not a person needs fucking help.

@@cygnusprime6728he made some big biased historical misunderstandings such as the Manchurian genocide and downplayed it pretty hard, it was so much worse than the Nazi holocaust that even the Nazis were horrified with its brutality, let that sink in. Also the atomic bombings weren’t totally unjustified like he claimed if you look at the historical context and might have saved tens of thousands of life’s on both fronts by ending the war in its tracks, Japan was going to fight to the bitter end and the estimated casualties on US side alone had they done just a regular invasion by land was an astounding 800.000 dead at least not to mention the casualties on Japanese side had those bombs not been dropped, Thomas Sowell made a damn good historical content video on it if you don’t believe it.

Kenshin really helped me out in my teenage years. It was something me and my dad really bonded over. So I have really good memories of it. I will be watching the new one despite what happened with the creator. I don’t condone what he did but I do believe in redemption and I do believe that if you truly want to repent it depends on how you live going forward. I truly hope that what he puts out continues to help other people and he himself can give that back to society to atone for what happened.

In response to the CP thing being illegal until 2014...I just remembered I had a meeting with the director of the original Fruits Basket in 2004.. it was my first anime convention & I was 11 at the time and went to go get my book autographed by him after what FB panel he was in. I noticed while on the line, he signed my dad's book and couple other people's books before me normally like everyone else, but when he got to me, his face changed. He had a visible cheesy smile on his face and his translator was telling me he "Really liked how I looked and how beautiful I was and wanted to know how old I was" (mind you I wearing a painted spongebob shirt but my physical features didn't match an 11 year old going through really early puberty...more like an older teenager). I told him and he got excited & asked if he could take a picture of me. He didn't take a picture of ANYONE else. I didn't really make any connections like this because I was just happy to see someone in the animation industry was somehow happy to see me and made me want to work with people like him. He also signed my book differently than anyone elses-- with huge blush marks around his face. I didn't think about it then, but I feel extremely uncomfortable thinking about this now....

People with this mental illness are created in isolation. The ppl around you, the culture you grow up in, things that happen to you or are done to you. These are all causes of these kind of problems. I do wish he faced more serious punishment regardless of how terrible the social stigma is in Japan but I wish he was required to receive psychological counseling. This is a sickness and a sickness doesn't just go away. And make no mistake, as long as he's out in society and is suffering this kind of mental illness, it's going to negatively affect the people around him in that society. Alot of ppl are talking about separate the art from the artist and while I get that…these days you just can’t as so many ppl use that excuse to slide under the radar with there own sick habits. It’s the same with me going these year to Anime Expo in LA as there was an issue this year with a grown man taking inappropriate pictures of children at the event. Luckily a father stepped in, but the excuses of that man was fueled by what some of these Japanese anime’s present when it comes to these situations with adults and kids. These pedos think that just b/c it was taken lightly in the anime that it’s the same in real life. People influenced by these kinds of anime’s think it’s a pass for this kinda mess and often make excuses of separate the art from the artist. The REAL issue is we don’t mentally live in a society where common-sense is welcomed nor intellect anymore. Sadly many people use the excuse of art vs artist to align there own sympathies and sick desires with the artist in question and this excuse is done to death. Mind you before I heard about this I was a big RK fan, and I’m the same age as you so I grew up with this; also a little of his lifestyle is in the work as Karou was 17 and Kenshin 28 when they married I believe. So yeah it hurts me not to support this as I fell in love with the OVAs like Trust and Betrayal and Reflections, but I don’t support the art or the artist.

This was an interesting perspective on the whole situation. I had always felt that Watsuki was left off with little more than a slap on the wrist and, while I do still feel his punishment was not nearly harsh enough, I didn't take into account how he will now be viewed through Japanese culture and society. Though I have a lot of nostalgia for Rurouni Kenshin I cannot in good faith partake in the new anime series knowing the man who will benefit from it. That being said, I'm not going to tell other people what they can and cannot watch as I'm not their mother.

I think videos like this are extremely important because you can't really solve a problem if you don't understand how it becomes a problem in the first place. If anything this can be a way of understanding how to prevent vulnerable people from being harmed in the future, or at least find ways of using empathy and knowledge to discourage or stop bad behavior. I live in a community where basically Convicts are put into an arts and crafts program as part of their "rehabilitation" within the prison. They do sell their products to visitors going in the facility. And I happen to come across those in part of attending school related activities. He created Rurouni Kenshin but he sold the rights of the anime over a decade ago and thus regardless of what a pervert he was behind close doors I never knew the guy I only knew Kenshin his creation and there has never been anything perverted in Kenshin and it's been one of the most amazing anime's of all times. Just like in hollywood they say a lot of the artist are pedos and evil but people go watch the movies and have nothing to do with their works. Not saying that you’re conflating Animated Lolicon with actual CP but I do want to make sure ppl aren’t considering them as the same. Theres a huge difference between abusing real children and something that is safe, sane, consentual with all adults. I do think loli (and shouta) should be retired as a trope and that it shouldn’t people something people (especially real children) can just run into in the anime community. Did lolicon become the thing it is because of pedos? Probably, and there are many lolicon who are not pedos because it is just a fantasy. There are also many reasons why someone may partake in this content including irl abuse survivors themsleves. Shaming this kink can also lead to abuse among participants as has happened in kinkster communities. (Not to mention what is considered to be CP can vary based on cultural practices). Runouni Kenshin was the first anime I truly fell in love with as a child, my first wall scroll was for it, I don't want to stop loving a story that effected me so deeply because the person who wrote it is a piece of work.

I just want to say thank you for making this video! You were able to put into words something that I have trouble doing myself constantly. Especially when you got into talking about the victims of said kinds of abuses just creating more victims. This stuff is always hard for me to talk about, but the only way I can move on is if I'm open about it (so let that act as a preface to anyone who doesn't want to read on). I was a victim of sexual abuse and harassment when I was in middle school. At 14, one of my classmates, for about a month, would, almost consistently, repeatedly do things to me while I was at my locker getting stuff for my afternoon classes. At first, nothing was ever shown, and I just went about my day when at the time, I didn't know what was wrong with that. One day, same person doing it decided to expose themself. That finally triggered me to go and get something done about it (this happened twice in the same day by the aforementioned person and another student). I went home, told my grandmother about it and how I desperately wanted to switch schools as I was constantly getting bullied as well, and I wasn't going back. She called the principal, I told them what happened, and eventually both students got kicked out (this didn't sit well with most of my classmates, obviously, but they had no idea what was going on, except for a few that I trusted). That experience left me traumatized. It still affects me to this day with any relationship that I try to establish (no attraction to kids, either, still find that beyond gross). Unknown to me at the time, there were two routes this could have gone: the aforementioned like Mr. Watsuki, or I could take my trauma, and try to do something good with it to try and prevent more victims. I chose the latter. I decided to work in education and become a teacher for that very reason: I want to be able to protect kids from these kinds of abuses that I went through. Any of my colleagues see that I do EVERYTHING I can to build and foster those positive relationships, why I try to be a role model and keep kids on the right path. I always encourage my students to come to me, privately, to discuss any matters that they may not want to talk about with anyone else. I had it happen to me earlier just this week when one two of my friends kept busting my balls and making jokes related to the aforementioned material discussed in your video, Mike. It got to the point where I purposefully kept silent until they were done, and just left the Discord call. Now, I can see some people possibly replying to me and saying that I need to dump those two as friends. But I won't. All because after I left and explained my situation to them and Why I don't tolerate those kinds of jokes being made at me or my career choice, is because of my past experience as I highlighted, they completely understood, apologized, and promised not to make more jokes regarding that, ever. It sickens me whenever I hear anything like what Mr. Watsuki owned. Obviously never created, but just owned in general. It's a vicious cycle that, no matter what's done to end it, will never end. All we can do, sadly, is just try to prevent more victims from becoming the offenders. Thankfully, given my content area is social studies, I understand why you made this video, and why you've been one of my favorite KZbinrs in recent memory. Please, keep up the good work, and thank you for also letting a fellow 30-something always get to relive the nostalgia that is 90s anime.

Before anything else, I wanted to thank you and let you know how much I appreciated this video of yours. As you, Watsuki’s work shaped a part of who I am today. I love the story, the messages of kindness and redemption and how you can grow and try to better yourself after committing horrible crimes. But as you also said nearly at the end, I am one of those who feels now extremely ashamed of myself for supporting this man. For getting the Ovas, for recommending the story and getting the manga. I am si ashamed for the dissonance that the message and the author gave me, and for the trust that was broken after knowing what he had done. It made me rethink and question his choices. Question if Kaoru being 17 to Kenshin’s 28 was an historical take or just a preference of his. It leaves me with a knot in my throat to not being able to enjoy this story anymore. Knowing the social, political and cultural intricacies of Watsuki’s case were eye opening, and I appreciate it a lot. I also will be checking out the podcast you suggested because, for as horrific as history can be, it’s better to know it and confront it. Information is power and all that. I came to this video already having my stance on the matter and I can’t, in good conscience, consume the story anymore without feeling sick and sad and shameful. But I hope that one day i can come back again to this story and enjoy it, see how good it is and was, even if I’ll plan to do it I. Way that it doesn’t support the author. Im happy you actually went into the history. I grew up loving anime, japanese video games, and Japanese pop culture and because of this, I can both relate and disconnect from a lot of the humor that might be seen as offensive in the US. For a lack of a better term, the perversion (light-hearted or obvious) often seen in a lot of these mediums is something I consume and enjoy specifically when it comes from a Japanese perspective, is animated, and when done in a way that I feel isn't too self-indulgent but rather just leaning into the culture. I've also done a lot of research regarding Japanese history and I've come to understand the relationship history and culture has played in modern Japan and how cultural norms are depicted in media. And so I don't justify some of the awful things that Nobuhiro Watsuki many others participate in, I understand where it comes from. And I've always maintained that the country and the culture that exists in the country has failed him just as much as it's failed. Anyone else who have those preferences? Not that we don't have autonomy and not that every Japanese man has the same preferences, but there's something much larger at play culturally that one is likely to become subjected to growing up in Japan. And so I appreciate the context that you've given. I guess I feel sorry for him more than I hate him and at the end of the day I still absolutely still love what he's created.

Rurouni Kenshin was one of my first anime (I have a vivid memory of the episode where Kenshin arrives in Kyoto), and was thus one of the first manga I ever purchased. I have a lot of mixed feelings about allowing myself to enjoy Kenshin with all of this. I'm watching the remake for the nostalgia, and I won't give away my books, but his crime will forever color my view of the series, and I think that stain is part of the punishment Watsuki will be living with for the rest of his life.

The big moral dilemma of whether to support someone’s work based on their or current self, has been something my friends and I have discussed for a long time. Having the context into japans background and social structure, how crime is seen, felt and handled rly gives insight. Yeah I think the outside perspective of westerners often blinds us to the deeply fucked elements of Japanese society. Like until fairly recently rape and murder had 15 year statute of limitations. So there are dozens if not hundreds of rapists, murderers etc. that just get away with it. Like they could confess and nothing would happen.

As a child, Rurouni Kenshin was my favorite anime. I watched it in the backseat on long car trips, could, and still can sing Freckles by heart. It gave me my love for the positive aspects of Japanese culture, and an interest in their rich history. I still love learning about Japanese history and culture today. However, when I found out about the author several years ago, I was stung and disgusted. This knowledge completely tainted all my fond memories of the anime and manga. I sold my entire collection (except Trust and Betrayal, I couldn't part with it.) Although in this video it was stated that people don't feel comfortable saying they still like the anime, I've actually had the opposite experience, where people have lashed out at me for rejecting it because of the author. Personally, I think if someone wants to keep being a fan and can separate the work from the author, that's fine. It's their prerogative and it's not my business to tell them how to feel about it. But equally I feel people have the right to be angry and hurt by it, and shouldn't be judged for cutting it out of their life. "The story isn't to blame/it has a good message/the characters have morals." I don't care, it's ruined for me. All I can think is that I was a fan of this all my childhood, and while I, as a child, was enjoying this work, the author was out hurting people just like me.

I want to share my experiences and thoughts on Japanese culture and societal differences. While serving in the Marines, I was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, and found it to be a unique and interesting place. I remember being told that Americans were not allowed in Japanese bookstores in 2009-10 due to concerns about CP . Despite this, I developed a deep appreciation for Japanese culture and even considered living there in the future. As a fan of anime and manga, I am particularly drawn to your channel. It's fascinating to see how different societies have varying perspectives on certain subjects. For example, during my time in Afghanistan, I witnessed the legality of young girls marrying much older men. On the other hand, in Okinawa, I saw a young girl, no older than three years old, confidently walking to the supermarket by herself every day. These experiences have made me realize how cultures shape our perception of what is right or wrong. In conclusion, I refuse to let the actions of the author of Rurouni Kenshin hinder my enjoyment of the overall story. Also, I just want to add. I don't condone the actions of the author. Nor, do I endorse the action else where. I'm well aware the ownership and distribution of CP is wrong.

as always, you're very nuanced, and i appreciate it. it's very hard. i've had my own... trauma, you can say, that makes this issue very touchy for me - and i grew up watching kenshin and loving it deeply. normally i am very good at separating art from author but this particular instance is very difficult i think, even though you're right - he wasn't showing it off in his work at all. but this one in particular, is just... it's a particularly vile crime that makes it hard to look past supporting him. i think you have a lot of good points regarding the culture, and how different the views regarding his crimes have been historically, and i do think it's important to consider. but also, i personally wouldn't support a creator who had committed a crime related to homophobia, for example, despite the culture and views surrounding the queer community being what they are historically in the USA. the crimes that watsuki committed are, in no uncertain terms, horrific. participating in that... field is disgusting and abhorrent. and he is still directly profiting off of kenshin, which is where i draw the line. i absolutely refuse to help put money in his pocket, even if he (and the country as a whole) thinks he has been punished enough, though i do not think he was even close to punished enough. i don't believe he's an "evil person", or can't change, but i do not have to be responsible for supporting him in that change or forgiving him, either. which sucks, truly. because rurouni kenshin IS one of the greats. he is an extremely talented creator. his art is gorgeous, and he has such a passion for the story. i will always love that story itself. but i, personally, can't look at kenshin without thinking of all the children he hurt. no doubt he used money he made off his IP to fund that field. obviously he didn't write it for that purpose - kenshin would not even be close to the story that it is, otherwise. but i can't look past it. i still struggle to see how people can, but i know that's due to my own traumas regarding the material. i don't hate anyone for still enjoying the series, but that doesn't mean i'll appreciate them financially supporting it in any way after what happened.

What also sucks is that the author, if he wants to deal with his condition, is outta luck since it may be hard to find a psychologist (let alone a good one) in Japan. Yes, what he did is terrible. No one can deny that. But it’s also terrible that people who deal with that particular condition don’t have access to help. It’s possible that, by processing the trauma which caused the issue, they could go into remission. At the end of the day though, it’s still a controversial topic with a lot of victims. I don’t blame people for the strong reactions they have in regards to the topic-no child should have to deal with that trauma
