As an American, I love how ppl always talk about the symphonic Russian style of weaving, passing, weaving, passing til they get to the net - as a bad thing? And that the Canadian-American style of punching elbowing and crashing the boards is better? LOL .... The Russian style is perfect it also shows their acrobatic & ballet training and how it’s needed for this sport (Watch the red army 2014 documentary for more of this) let’s face it guys we could & should learn a lot from their style of Russian hockey. Interestingly after so many years with these Russian guys on our side of the pond we still play like a bunch of Keystone cops compared to them. After all these years. Americans never learn.

As someone who grew up in Metro-Detroit in the 70-80’s I can’t say I disagree. Watching the R5 play night after night was something else. It truly was keep away most of the time(lol not exaggerating). Not only their style of play, but their skating ability is what set them apart. Unreal. This isn’t directed at you and I get what your saying, but As someone who’s played for 40 yrs. I think a lot of people underestimate the talent of an NHL player. To watch a game in person especially down low, near the ice, it’s remarkable how good they all are. Guys like McDavid are from another universe.

I hate to break it to you, but the “Russian Style” is closer to the norm these days. You can’t hit and punch your way to victory anymore like you could back then.

I dont think we should leave our style of play in the dust!! I'm Russian myself but I live in Canada. If we took a bit of the skill they have in Russia & We perfect that with a form of hitting/skill , nobody will ever be better than us !!

Hotdawgfilms nah, you’re not “breaking” anything to me lol. With five hockey players in the immediate family I have to watch this shyte go down day to day. We have a long way to go to to get where you think we already are.

Lotta memories for the Detroit sports fan in the modern era but for me the highlight will always be this era of Red Wing Hockey. Was hard to watch for me as my younger sister, who recently paased away, was a passionate wingnut. She would have loved this documentary. 😘

Slapshot was good, quite entertaining. Miracle, same thing, pretty good cinema. The Russian Five? Just might be the most important hockey film ever made. Wait, make that the most important sports film ever made, it's that good. Doesn't matter to me if you are a hockey fan or not, or if you even like sports, this is one of the greatest docu's I have ever seen, period. It simply lays bare the Soviet life that most of us have never known anything about. The Soviet life witnessed in this film and chronicled in Red Army is an eye opener to say the least...

This is a great documentary, except my one issue with it is that there was a little hiccup one of the interviewees said. “During the Glory Years of Gordie Howe, and that power line with *Alex Ovechkin* and Ted Lindsay” no, Ovechkin wasn’t even born yet, it’s Alex Delvecchio, and Sid Abel. Four of Detroit’s legends!

All these guys were ethnic Russians. In general, in Soviet hockey, I do not know a single man of a different nationality. This applies to all Soviet coaches. They were all Russian. Even if there were no USSR, tsarist Russia would have survived.
