The Ruy Lopez is an incredibly popular opening at all levels of chess, from the amateur player up to top level grandmasters. It is considered as one of the best openings for white after the moves 1.e4 e5.
In this video, IM Andrey Ostrovskiy is sharing with you the Open Variation, which is an interesting choice for players who tend to play the more aggressive way.
The Ruy Lopez opening is characterized by the following move sequence:
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5
and after 3...a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 we are within the Morphy Defense. If white castles with 5.0-0 and black continues with 5...Nxe4, we enter the Open Variation. The main focus of this video is to show you the main strategies and plans for both sides in the different variations.

this is excellent. You explain the purpose of every move and even something about the evolution of thinking. That is you illustrate the drawback of some logical looking moves by showing the consequences, and how improvements were made.

I just ran into this in blitz today! I watched this about half a year ago, and I was on theory until ...Bxf2, then blundered into mate shortly as white, but it is so cool that I would’ve gotten an interesting textbook position had I remembered my lines, so I am glad I could revisit this :DD

@10:30 the knight is not trapped because black can retreat the knight to d6 or f6 and if white takes the knight, the bishop on e3 is captured with check. Excellent opening videos by the way from you and IM Astaneh.The way u guys explain the idea behind each moves in a opening is amazing..You guys didn't cover much on the sicillian opening theory though, will be looking forward to that

I don’t think you know how pawns work… But the knight is indeed trapped, and it would be captured if it goes to d6 or f6

Basically, the first time you move any given pawn, you can move it one or two squares, but after that it can only move one square. Unlike other pieces, it does not capture how it moves. It can capture 1 square diagonally left or right, not forward

what a pathetic comment indicating the person who had written this statement doesnt know any chess... He literally explained why the knight wasnt trapped by giving a crucial line. Chess isnt as simple as you would think (pawn takes knight its over) LMAO... The queen can take the bishop after the pawn captures the knight, and here you are accusing people without getting your knowledge straight...@@charlespg3d190

@20:10 13... Bb5 is not so bad, after 14. axb5 Black can take back with the knight, rather than the pawn. This is the most popular continuation in the Masters database after 13. a4 and is the engine recommendation for Black.

Why black always plays 5. .. Nxe4 instead of 5 .. b5 followed by 6 .. Nxe4 ? I think playing b5 reduces the amount of lines black needs to know, since Bxc6 is no longer an option.
@danielyuan9862

Because this video is about the variation where black takes the pawn on e4.
@davidgirsvaldas8725
@davidgirsvaldas8725 Жыл бұрын
@@danielyuan9862 Your answer is plain wrong. If b5 would be improvement over Nxe4, then black would play it every time, because this move is forcing. Line Nxe4 would be considered a sideline. Computer analysis says that b5 is mistake because white plays moves like Re1 with Nc3 follows, but that is not necessarily the best lines for humans.

I think in that line after re4 nc5 white can move his bishop to d5

This is a very good presentation. I really appreciate it. If I could be so bold as to offer up constructive criticism, I would say that if your instruction is intended for advanced players then I have no criticism. However, if your Instruction is intended for novices and beginners, then you greatly overestimate their ability to follow this at this speed. Being a beginner myself, I often need things explained to me that people such as yourself take for granted as automatically true. However, sometimes I don’t see why a certain thing is true such as why the rook could not have moved before the bishop took it. It was because the rook was pinned to the king. Why black made another move before taking the rook immediately was at first, a mystery. Things like this need to be explained for people at my level. Otherwise, you’re just talking right past us. What I do is set up a board and follow along live at home, I pause the video, and study the position after each move, but most people won’t take the time to do that and will sadly just click another video instead. Thank you.
