Yeah, I’ve heard bits and pieces. I think the main issue is that people don’t realize how much risk they’re actually taking on. When you put everything into something like the S&P 500, you’re heavily exposed to the biggest companies, and if they underperform or the market tanks, your whole portfolio takes a hit.
@Larry1-pl2wq
@Larry1-pl2wq 19 күн бұрын
Exactly. And people forget that the S&P 500 is cap-weighted. That means a handful of the biggest companies-like the tech giants-have an outsized influence on performance. If they’re struggling, it drags the whole thing down. We’ve seen that recently with market volatility tied to tech sector layoffs and interest rate hikes
@roseyfischer
@roseyfischer 19 күн бұрын
Right, and the other problem is the false sense of security. The S&P 500 has done well over time, but that doesn’t mean it’s a guaranteed win every year. A lot of retirees I know thought they’d be set by just riding it out, but now they’re scrambling because the market hasn’t performed like they expected.
@Johnwhite-c3n
@Johnwhite-c3n 19 күн бұрын
And that’s the thing, isn’t it? It’s not that index funds are bad-they’re a great tool-but they’re not a one-size-fits-all solution. You need balance, diversification, and a strategy that matches your goals and timeline. Blindly following the S&P 500 is how people end up in trouble, especially when they’re close to or in retirement.

Even with the right strategies and appropriate assets, investment returns can differ among investors. Recognizing the vital role of experience in investment success is crucial. I’m taking the hybrid approach, VOO, SCHD as my foundation, with growth like MA, UNH, HD. And slow growth like O and PEP. I have a 20 year time horizon. But the best part is I still enjoy my life while I do this. Travel, and buy ONLY things I love. It’s the best combo, plus I love the small victories with receiving dividends/dividend growth/share price appreciation.

ETFs offer exposure to a wide range of assets, such as stocks, bonds, or commodities, which can help reduce risk. ETFs, like broad market index, sector-specific, and bond ETFs, are favored for long-term investments because of their diversification, reducing risk while offering growth and income potential.

That's great advice! Julianne Iwersen Niemann's perspective on investments as a long-term growth strategy, much like a well-planted tree, is a solid analogy. A good investment strategy should be resilient enough to endure market fluctuations while still growing over time. It's essential to have a strong plan that balances risk and reward, much like cultivating a tree that thrives even in tough conditions. Working with a seasoned expert like Julianne can help ensure your financial decisions lead to sustainable growth.

I am a Ph.D. student in the field of finance. Two things that I think are missing here is: 1) The P/E ratio of the index might be high right now, but research has shown that one should look at the Forward P/E ratio to judge over/undervaluation. 2) The index might have returned 10% historically before fees, but people forget it is a price index, not performance index. The S&P 500 performance does not include dividends, so the true performance is even higher. Add some benefit from Synthetic Replication and you might have gotten around 11%, making quite some difference over a long horizon. Short story even shorter: Stay invested, keep up your saving plan and enjoy your retirement way earlier than everybody around you that don't even invest in the first place.

I seriously doubt that S&P 500 will plunge 26%, Reason? There is an equal market chance associated with each crash or collapse. You'd feel a drop in higher weighted companies as a temporary dip, and then it would be readjusted next quarter to account for the loss in value. That's the whole point of index funds; they are constantly adjusted to get rid of the lower performing stocks. The dip in price would just mean shares cost less until the readjustment, meaning you can buy more before the index corrects itself and picks up again. Over time, the S&P500 always grows.

I used to "buy and hold" into a diversified portfolio of about a dozen ETF's because I was convinced that trading would destroy my account (so I was told..). The problem with this strategy is if the market is high, you should sell and not DCA as risk is increased, dividends decrease, and returns are decreased. When I buy I wait for a low (52 week low, 26 week low, etc) and when it reaches the same weekly high I sell and put that idle money in Money Market Funds and wait for another X week low to buy in again. If someone is all in DCA in VTI as example and the market is high and then crashes 10% plus then all progressed is wiped out for a few months/years. I will always cycle my ETF's and buy low and sell high as it's superior to buy and hold DCA.

Don't forget that most people earn money through a 9 to 5 job, plus the accrued debt (credit card, mortgage, car loan and student loan). In a recession, layoffs happen. People simultaneously lose their income and still have to pay debt. A recession will hurt those who are living paycheck to paycheck, without an emergency fund big enough to survive years of economic crisis. 2020 stimulus checks may not come to the people. Trust Musk's plan (2 year of depression to hurt people, and after that, the rich buy everything at a discount in the stock market).

.. the Mag 7 will likely change as time unfolds and the index will simply "self cleanse" as JL Collins puts it. Folks are so fixated on the Index depending on the Mag 7, but the nature of the index is that it is loyal to no company, just whichever ones succeed overall. That's where the attraction lies.

Just curious, how does SPY works? SPY tracks the 500stocks. Say if today an investor buys SPY, does the manager of SPY in-turn purchases the 500stocks? And when someone sells SPY, the manager sells the 500 stocks? does a spike in SPY purchases leads to spike in the 500 stocks?

Just a reminder that there are total stock market ETF's and mutual funds that better track the market than the S&P 500, which is a company, run by dorks, that sometimes do moronic things, like waiting to add Tesla, until it already went to the moon, and was the #7 stock in the index, once they got off their asses and actually added it. The Dow Jones just adding Nvidia after a huge, historic run is very similar. This is why a total market fund is better, because stocks are added when they are much smaller, thus giving investors more upside, than just waiting for the gatekeepers to dain something acceptable, before adding it to their index.

The solution is to diversify even more by investing in a global ETF, instead of betting on the continued success of a single market (especially one dominated by a few - possibly overvalued - behemoths from the same sector). You'll still be investing in those companies, but with a smaller percentage of your capital. So if there IS an AI bubble, or an American recession, you won't be hit as hard.
@Governemntistheproblem

I used to think like that. But since a few years I stopped buying non US etfs. First because the uniquitous magnificent 7 do a big chunk of their sales abroad, Second because most major economies except the US have shrinking populations. And that is not very conducive to growth. As Buffet says, "Never bet against America"... and I am not even American or living in the US... so it is VOO, QQQM and SCHD all the way
@PieterFret
@PieterFret 25 күн бұрын
@@Governemntistheproblem Interesting. Hadn't really considered the population problem. Although for companies selling globally, that wouldn't really be an issue. Still, I think I'd rather invest globally, giving up some pure performance for lower long-term risk and more peace of mind :) I will however begin value investing in individual companies sometime in the future as well, to add some performance potential (with extra risk).
