Not very many people know what it is or even car to learn what it is. Where as S13/S14 are immediately recognized for their value; and yes they ARE overall WAY better cars. In short, the best quality of the S12 is that no one wants 'em and some S13 parts fit.

The s12 had many engines from factory, just to throw a few out there, the ca18et, ca18det, ca20, vg30, fj20 and variations of each motor too! 2. It’s a car that flew under the radar on the streets, but in rally the s12 was very famous in its day, therefor there is a demand, to the specific purpose owner. 3. This is gona be a long read, skip if you want but it could be interesting for you. That S12 over here is worth a bit because in a world where 180sx, S13, 14, and 15's came to us from the factory in the thousands, older cars like this stand out more because of their rarity. It's not about the performance. It just looks cool and keeping cool cars still on the road is what matters in the end. This is a fairly tidy example I'd guess you could push for $25 - 30k NZD if it was here and RHD. And yes, someone would buy that. The market over here is wack... 3 years ago an S14 was a 4k car all day, now people expect $20K+ and they're all the same used and abused cars. In my city cars rule, as there's nothing to do at night unless you're a gamer or love blowing your money on a night out at the pubs.. So what else can you do at night when everything else is closed? Meet up with other people to check out their rides, go for mid-night cruises or if you're a delinquent go to the industrial area and rip some burnouts. Hence why car prices are different here, cars are more valuable as everyone wants to turn up with a sick ride. I grew up watching the cars that came out, started with American and Aussie muscle, to the ricer scene which then you had the ricers and everyone else with their 70's 80's Toyota's rotas, Skylines, then as 90's car's became cheaper everyone had them, ricers, people doing burnouts, people cruising. It was at the time kind of boring because literally everyone had a 4 door R32, Silvias were basically known as the girls skyline and if you couldn't pick up either somehow then you'd pick up a Laurel or Ceferio for $1k.. Now You don't see as many of those cars and all you really see are Holden's and Fords.. Most of the people going out are taking their mum's Corolla or basic traffic.. All the guys who used to have all the 90's cars either wrapped them around a pole or followed the old muscle boys and grew up with families and locked the car away in the garage for when they got time to go to a worth while event.

I bought that s12, paid 7.5k got a shitload of parts for it too. I fucking LOVE IT, the community for it is actually alive I’m ngl. Gonna change the cringe exhaust, got rid of the golf club shifter, got some new coil overs to raise it a bit so it doesn’t fucking scrape everywhere. It’s been a solid car over the year I’ve owned it. Tons of fun and it’s the ultimate cope Ae86 except it makes stututu noises and has a cool digital dash that updates my speed every second “5,15,22,32,37,45,60” lol

Finally wrote it off when I was pulling away from a valet stand in Miami and the valet started shouting 'Senor! Senor!' and ran up with two brake calipers that had fallen off as I pulled out. I've always loved this 80's body style, especially liftbacks. Years ago when I was looking to buy my first 80's project car in the early 2010's I was looking for an S12 because I wanted that body style and pop ups but couldn't find many for sale and ended up eventually getting an 83 Celica liftback. There are lots of 80s japanese cars that look similar from the A pillar back when you look at them. I just looked up S12s here in Australia, there are a decent amount on FB marketplace with varying prices, cheapest I could see was AUD $4500 for a stripped out car that would probably only be good for parts. Unfinished projects still look around AUD $12k for somethign that looks super rough, with no straight body panels, paint that looks like its been sanded in prep for a paintjob , and half installed interiors with wiring everywhere... And with the cars looking they way they are, you will end up spending a lot more than your $12k buy in price on getting it to pass our road safety inspection to get it legal - and because they are so hard to find good luck finding a reasonably priced parts car. They will be pretty much nonexistent in any car wreckers yards too.

I love S12s but theyre painfully difficult to find in any condition. i sold mine and regret it everytime i see another one. Those cars look best when the owners stick to an oem+ modification path. swap the factory lip kit for the MK2 SE lip kit, get rid of the stock foam spoiler in favor of the MK2 SE spoiler, and find some UK spec tail lights. leave the interior stock, run a simple tasteful dual tip exhaust, lower it an inch and throw some nice period correct wheels on it. Maybe some Longchamps or Equip 01s. the stock CA18ET is slow, but the novelty of the non-intercooled turbo setup is amusing to look at. i dig them and wouldnt mind owning another in the future

You are correct about the scrap prices on that S14 chassis. Over here at Calbag Metals in Tacoma WA they are paying 5 cents a pound or $100 for a ton(2,000lbs). With the current rates at the moment you don’t get much money by scraping a car.

I have an 87 s12 making 220hp with just a t28 an intercooler and the boost turned up. Love the s13s but just prefer the old squarer shaped cars, plus I'm running mostly s13 suspension underneath it's the best of both worlds. It is very much a cult following. If it was an s12 in initial D instead of and 86 then these things would be unobtainable so I'm glad it is how it is and that I can buy one for less than 2k and enjoy it 😂

For a clean S12 with the right performance its reaching over 10k. Also looking for sale statistics is kinda hard on this cause of how rare they are. You could only find like 2 that sold. Those who buy an S12 and knows the platform buys it to keep it alive. The drift boys who just want the cheapest thing that rwd to go "drift" will see that its not the easiest platform to slap on ebay performance mods and go. You gotta do the research and your own work to get it the way you want. For those who know like myself love it and which is why when you see them its a rare sight and only select few enjoys them and tries to rescue them. S12 was limited production, S13 high production.. what you will find now due to the drift world. Clapped out S13s asking close 10k rusted, no bumpers, mismatched panels, frame damaged. You could get lucky a find a survivor S12 for 3 - 5k and know what you can do with it using the S13 parts and have a car you could enjoy on the track and turn heads.

Lol its literally called the S12, obviously its an S chassis. S13, 14 and 15 suspension components bolt on and there are kits to fit s13 and 14 rear subframes into em at which point its basically a more interesting s13
